it seems that the sons of elrond are truly down played.

their paternal grandfather is Earendil and their maternal grand ma is Galadriel

with the influx of those genes i would think that they would be kickass elven LORDS

But in the book they seem like really handsome rangers

however i THINK that in LOTR elrond said he sent several riders out to look for the fellow ship maybe they went too.

Yes that's quiet possible. And I think they were also out as scouts after the battle at the ford, to look were the Nazgul had been washed to.

Yeah, I know they were sent out to look for the Nazgul after Frodo's arrival in Rivendell--or maybe a few days before. I really like the sons of Elrond, they're great characters, but they don't do enough in the books! But they do go wandering around killing orcs, in vengeance, because orcs killed their mother. Now that's something I wish Tolkien had written more of! :)

Orcs didn't kill their mom. But they did wound her and she went over sea.

Really? Okay. . .I have to read the appendices again. But they did torture her. . .the point was, they went around avenging her. Whatever. Thanks for clarifying that, Afro-elf.

All of Elrond's children are down-played, aren't they? Otherwise Peter Jackson wouldn't feel inclined to expand Arwen's character for the movies. Arwen has more importance in the story than her brothers, but none of them get enough time in the narrative. I'm not finding fault, it's just that there are a lot of really cool characters who are only touched upon. Look at the chieftains who rode into Gondor for the Battle of the Pelennor Fields. Look at Imrahil (one of the chieftains I know) and Haldir and Gildor.

I think this ties in with the ' where were the elves' post. The time of elves was waning, and our focus was drawn to men. Not that I wouldn't have wanted more elaboration, though. I am reading Unfinished Tales and really enjoy the more indepth info about the Silmarillion characters.

I agree, but part of that makes it so much more like a history rather than just a story (which would've left out all the extraneous characters). So many times there are people that you hear about only once or twice, and you know they were fascinating/important people...
