what plot changes and possible endings would you have written to the sil.
mine would be fairly evident:
morgoth destroys the the pathetic alliance and takes revenge on the valar by making valinor his fortress. he then punishes the infidels for their insulance and eats manwe in a show of power.
and all live happily ever after....muhahahhah.

i never thought about it , but i guess i am. the first few times i read lotr i was all like" gandalf is great, aragorn is cool etc." after i read the sil i gained a new perspective on good and evil in the books. i found the evil in tolkiens books to be interesting to say the least. there are good characters that i like, ulmo , aule and some others, but most have some rebellious nature that detaches them from the conforming majority.
sorry if i strayed off topic.

What if Hurin had died in Angband and didn't reveal Gondolin's general location or take the naecklace to Thingol. Then maybe all the remaining elves would have gone to Doriath and eventually Gondolin and Doriath would have been the only two kingdoms left and would have forged an alliance.
Or what if Finrod had defeated Sauron and then Finrod, with Beren, Luthien and Huan would have gone to take the silmaril and that is when Charcaroth would have been killed and the silmaril wouldn't have been eaten and Finrod would not have let Turin change Nargothrond's policy.

elves crush Morgoths forces at the nirneath ardoniad after a glorious cavalry charge, routing the orcs. Dwarves behead big dragons. Forces of light trash fortress of Morgoth, Hurin slays Morgoth. Morgoth banished to the pit. Forces of good unite in friendly federation. Middle earth is all free and happiness rains.
not very excting really. original plot much better than anything else.
what if feanor or his father were killed?
what if the sils were not stolen?
what if the terrible vow was not taken?

Going further on what Noldorlord said. What If Feänor happened to be home when broke into his house and stole the silmarils?
Imagine he got himself killed. Would his sons have gone to Middle earth to revenge him or would the Valar have stepped in?
Or what if Ungoliath was just a bit faster and had eaten the silmarils? Feänor's sons would have taken on the big spider, (not as dramatical as taking on a black lord, but who would care?) Instead of orcs there would be spiders running rampage in the lands.
These things can go on for ever.

Gwindor holds his temper.
The battle (whatever it was) doesn't start prematurely.
Maedhros gets there.
The elves decimate morgoth's fortress, and seal up angband again. All the elf lords live. Hurin isn't captured.
They are all good and well until the valar come.

Easy, the Baranavair would have played a prominent role. :)

after eating the trees of valinor, ungoliant feels very sick, dies, morgoth fails to nick silmarils cos ungoliant squashed him when she fell over, after feeling sick.

The hobbits develop nuclear weapons, the secret of which is stolen by sauron's agents. A long cold war ensues until Iluvatar gets sick of the whole mess, recalls the valar, and obliterates middle earth. Then again, maybe not;)

Beren's knife doesn't break, he gets all three silmarils, Carcharoth doen't bite him, Thingol gives the silmarils to the sons of Feanor, Morgoth in his rage sends all his forces running rampant and their scattered forms are destroyed and Morgoth is unable to rebuild.
