I finished FOTR in four days, then waited impatiently for someone to turn TTT in at our school library (I would by them, but I'm broke, in a way) and it didn't come in.
And it didn't come in....
And it DIDN'T COME IN.
Well, yesterday, I got sick of it and went in and asked the librarian to reserve it for me. I had to turn in a different book (called Stuck In Neutral, it's brilliant, but that's for a different board :D) today and went in, and she had it in. Same thing happened to me with FOTR.
ARGH!
I'm so happy...I still hate the artwork on this publication though. Legolas has a mullet! BAH!

There was this site a few months ago that had copies of very recent books (20th century) in txt and doc format. Legend has it that LOTR, Sil, UT, Hobbit were available there as well as the hitchiker's guide and dune series. It's no longer available.
There is another site where the classics are available. This one has everything pre-20th century plus modern public-domain literature and hence freely and legally distributed to anyone who's interested. I think it's gutenberg.org

harsh on my pocketssess, especially as i read them in quick succession

The first one was; and was therefore, rightfully closed down.
The gutenberg site deals with stuff that's already public domain (no one will claim exclusive ownership) like public records, the classics (gulliver's travels, the bible, and other pre20th century works), and those publicly offered by the legal owners.

I purchased a boxed set of The Hobbit and LOTR for about 25 dollars. The cover design leaves a bit to be desired though.

I have the lovely one-volume edition, so I can just keep reading without worrying about the other books! Especially useful for the end of TTT ...not to give anything away... But it's the movie edition, the cover is just that image of a Dark Rider in the Forest, and he's sorta backlit...it could be a lot better, and more representitive of the three books...oh well. It's the words that count!!!!!!
THE BALROG HAS WINGS! IT DOES! WINGS! WINGS LIKE A BIRDY! FLAP FLAP FLAP!
Ive got all of the above books, and the adv. of tom bomb or whatever its called.. Ive got 4 or 5 different copies of them in paperback, but i find having them on the computer is awsome for 1 main reason-> find word. Really helps to be able to search the entire lord of the rings for every passage where frodo says "i can't believe its not butter" etc..
(and no, he doesn't really say that. But if the balrog didn't have wings, i bet he would!)

Does it really matter if the Balrog has wings? And if he did, then why didn't he fly out of the chasm in Moria when the bridge broke? Just curious

does anyone here have any of the books on tape?
I got the hobbit on audiotape about 9 years ago and got the lord of the rings on tape last year, it was $75.
Each tape is an hour and i think its a 12 tape set.
Of course they arent as good as the books, but I like hearing the vioces and they are much closer to the book than the movies.

I have the Fellowship on cassette, unabridged. I think it cost about 28 dollars, but I'm not positive as it was a gift.
I think someone on this forum may have an incredible obsession with Balrogs (lol, correct me if I'm wrong)

Anyone else have the BBC production (besides Tanoliel)? They're really cool!!!!!
And I just can't resist putting in my humble opinion of Balrog wings (don't kill me, guys!):
Maybe they have non-functional wings, so they are there, looking rather impressive, but are useless in terms of flying. It could just be the bone structure w/out the skin. That's what it looks like in the movie, sort of, and it makes sense to me....
