I am posting to recommend the writings of Robert Holdstock, winner of the World Fantasy Award. Specifically, a series of related books concerning the goings on in and around a small patch of primeval English Forest named Ryhope Wood. The titles of the books are: 'Mythago Wood',' Lavondyss', 'The Bone Forest', and 'The Hollowing'. There may be more in the sequence, but I have not encountered them. They are remarkable books, mysterious and magical. Celtic and mythical themes are interwoven with the plot, which concerns the experiences of various people, some of whom are related to each other, and the "occupants" of the forest, and the forest itself.
Within the wood, the ancient mythical spectres and beings that inhabit the collective subconscious of England are very much alive. The wood is alarmingly larger on the inside than the outside, and time passes altogether differently while wandering its mossy tracks. Amidst the trees and mouldering leaves wander lost heroes of ages past, gods and strange creatures. To wander in may take a mans sanity from him, or change him forever. In 'Mythago Wood', a young man becomes entangled along with his brother in the search for the truth about the nature of the shadows and figures in the forest, and a harrowing but strangely beautiful journey to the heart of the forest commences.
Try these books, they are excellent!
