What about Erebor, The Lonely Mountain, in the Winter ? A Three month long bash of tales and beer with those hardcore party-meister dwarves, with skiing or sledging down the mountain as a hangover cure. LOL :D

:)
The 'Land of Gift' is the English translation of Andor, a Sindarin name. It was one of the names for the island upon which the realm of Númenórë was founded. I have an 'Andor longing', I guess, though I am more interested in the history of the First Age of the Sun and all the long Ages of the Stars and the Trees before them.

Númenórë
same place of the Numereons?
isn't that west of ME
or do you mean east of aman
Ñólendil
10-27-2001, 07:37 PM
Númenor' is just short for 'Númenórë'. I meant 'some place in the East of Númenor'. That is where -- I think -- N*simaldar and Rómenna ('fragrant trees' and 'Eastwards', respectively) were to be found. To but read about them is to inhale the sweet fragrance of the trees of the forest and the waters of the Sea, most fair of Nature's provinces.

I'd live in the Green Tookland in the summer, Cool nights out on the green lawn of the Tookhouse staring up at the stars and warm days exploring the woody end, and at times spending a week in Buckland swimming and boating in the Brandywine, and exploring the warrenlike halls of Brandyhall. Then I'd go east to Erebor for the winter and listen to the tales at the feasts of the mountain. Then to fair Rivendell for the spring to listen to the elven singing and to join in on the choruses under the stars in June.

Nan-tathren! Thank you, I couldn't think of the name. Nan-Tasarinan kept popping up in my head, but I wasn't sure. I think that's the Quenderin name that Treebeard used in his song.
... For I had seen little of the lands of Middle-earth, and we came to Nan-tathren in the spring of the year. Lovely to heart's enchantment is that land, Tuor, as you shall find, if ever your feet go upon the southward roads down Sirion. There is the cure of all sea-longing, save for those whom Doom will not release. There Ulmo is but the servant of Yavanna, and the earth has brought to life a wealth of fair things that is beyond the thought of hearts in the hard hills of the North. In that land Narog joins Sirion, and they haste no more, but flow broad and quiet through living meads; and all about the shining river are flaglilies like a blossoming forest, and the grass is filled with flowers, like gems, like bells, like flames of red and gold, like a waste of many-coloured stars in a firmament of green. Yet fairest of all are the willows of Nan-tathren, pale green, or silver in the wind, and the rustle of their innumerable leaves is a spell of music: day and night would flicker by uncounted, while still I stood knee-deep in grass and listened. There I was enchanted, and forgot the Sea in my heart. There I wandered, naming new flowers, or lay adream amid the singing of the birds, and the humming of bees and flies; and there I might still dwell in delight, forsaking all my kin, whether the ships of the Teleri or the swords of Noldor, but my doom would not so. ...
--- Voronwë
In the willow-meads of Tasarinan I walked in the Spring.
Ah! the sight and the smell of the Spring in Nan-tasarion!
And I said that was good. ...
--- Ornefanga

Hey KGamgee, what does the K stand for?
I like cool and cold places without much snow, so it's a toss up between the North Farthing of the Shire and the Lonely Mountain. Elvish lands like Rivendell and Lothlorien would be too sad for me to bear, I suspect. Too warm, also.

Being a dragon would be pretty cool, as long as I could be a good dragon (or at least not a needlessly cruel dragon).
Being an elf would be pretty neat too, for the usual reasons (immortal, brave, wise, etc.).
A dwarf would be OK too, but not as good as dragon or elf.

Do u remember in the Fellowship of the Ring, that Elrond told Gandalf that the Elves were leaving Middle-Earth and asked him who he would turn to for help after the Elves had gone? And Gandalf told him he would look to the Men?
It certainly seems so! Y do most of u want 2 work around Minas Tirith, so close 2 battle dangers from Mordor?

Yeah, the Elves would die out from boredom. They just don't know how to have fun. What do they do in their spare time? Sing? Eat lembas? Painstakingly fashion identical blonde wigs? Ha! I'd take a nice mug of ale and a Hobbit birthday party any day.

Oh, but Feraway, Elves do rule the world!!!!! And we are NOT anorexic, just reasonably thin. Er, yeah.
*Looking down sternly at Feraway* And hobbits will always remain as they are, in their agriculture-based society. Not that it's a bad thing, but hobbits will never rule the world! :) Hahaha. And I don't talk to squirrels. Not often, anyway.
And another thing, we do know how to have fun! Singing songs that last all day is plenty of fun! Well, I think it is! You hobbits just don't understand how to have a good time without ale and pipeweed. Elves do.

Not only do Elves not rule the world, they're bad parents as well! Not once in LotR are elf-children seen! Their parents lock them up in dark closets all day! Now Hobbits, as we all know, are the kindest, gentlest, bravest, most loving, funniest, and coolest of all the races of Middle Earth! We don't have to be tall and self-rightous and warlike - we know how to live in peace and happiness, and our children actually see the light of day!

This is an exceprt from an ancient book, entitled, "Raising Your Children the ELVISH Way."
"When your elf child reaches the age of thirteen years, place him or her inside a barrel, seal the top. Cut a hole in the side, just large enough to pass food through. Then, when your your elf child reaches the age of twenty-one, seal up the hole."
(this was really paraphrased from Mark Twain, on How to Raise a Teenager. :))

I am only saying this to increase my posts to therefore become an elven warrior sooner! I'm still a "hobbit" too, Aaethirion. So, I have to say more! Mwahahaha! No, actually, I was wondering about the existance of elven children myself. They never show up!
Possible reason: I would assume elves don't reproduce near as much as humans and hobbits, because there would otherwise be huge population problems. And as the elves are fading in the third age, I guess they wouldn't be thinking about having kids, but about sailing across the sea.
And I don't talk to squirrels! I talk to crows. *ignores the funny looks I'm getting*

Elf:" And what did you do today?"
Squirrel:" I ate nuts"
Elf: "I'm immortal with fabulous hair"
Squirrel: "I ate nuts"
-And now, something completely different, a conversation between an elf and a hobbit:
Elf:" And what did you do today?"
Hobbit:" I ate a lot"
Elf: "I'm immortal with fabulous hair"
Hobbit: "I ate a lot”
So, why would anyone want to be a squirrel? …… err, hobbit?;)

*high fives Elvellon but misses* ow.
Good point! All hobits do are eat, sleep, party and.... wait.... that sounds good.... eek! I'm a traitor!!! *slaps self* WHEEEEEEE... Look at the birdes!
Also, Hobbit die young, somewhere in mid hundreds, I think... I forget, I read the books so long ago... anyway, Elves are immortal. Thats 1 for Elves and 0 for Hobbits.
Hobbits have daggars. Yawn. Boooooooring. Elves have bows. YEAH!!! Archery rox XD 2 for Elves 0 for Hobbits [[that ones more of an opinion though, so it may differ]]
Hobbits live underground or in small hills. Erm... very exciting. Yay, you get to lives where a whole lot of bugs can access your food. Elves live in trees, it takes longer for bugs to get up there, and the Elves'll prolly just get some bug spray when they notice. A large varity of creatures can visit and FIT into Elven houses, Elves, Wizards, and other tall creatures must bend over to get into Hobbit homes. Elves have homes fit for more social things. 3-2 for Elves, 0-1 for Hobbits.
Hobbits are short, they can't reach things high up. Elves are tall, they can reach things high up. To get thing lower, they just need to bend down to get it. Hobbits need ladders or stools. 4-3 for Elves, 0-1 for Hobbits.
Hobbits live in clear areas, which makes it easier to move around. Elves live in forest where its a bit hard to move around. 1-2 for Hobbits, 4-3 for Elves.
There are more, but at this point Elves are way in the lead, so they'll prolly keep beating Hobbits

Yeah! Go Feraway!
Elves are just so ignorant and barbaric that they have to fight all the time, that's why they have bows. They're hormones are out of control. Hobbits, on the other hand, are smart enough to want and maintain peace. Yes! Hobbits 1, Elves 0!
Hobbits have warm hobbit holes with large pantries. Elves have trees that lose their leaves in winter. At least they can spy on the neighbor's talan. Plus they have to climb out of the tree before going to the bathroom (I hope). Hobbits 2, Elves 0!
Elves have no sense of humor. Come on, show me one joke that an elf told in LotR! Just one! Hobbits are humorous and charming. Hobbits 3, Elves 0!
Elves live so long that they get tired of life and everyone gets tired of them. Hobbits have a nice, moderate lifespan. Hobbits 4, Elves 0!
I think it's pretty obvious who the dominant race is here . . .
:D
Feraway Hawkbriar
02-03-2002, 01:36 AM
Umm...FF?..chica...
Elves dont really try to go out fighting all the time...they CAN fight..that dosnt mean they like to.

Hear, hear, FrodoFriend. May Hobbits and Elves live in peace like we are meant to, and forget our differences :) And do something about those men! Although, leave peace until after I defend our side (the elves) once more...
~Elves fight when they have to, and not because they are violent and barbaric. And we are "wisest, fairest of all races" stress on the "wisest."
~Elves do have a sense of humor, although their brand of humor differs greatly from the (somewhat simple) minds of hobbits.
~100 years may seem long to a mortal such as yourself, but to an elf, it is nothing. And when we tire of life on Middle-earth, we can always sail across the sea and enjoy ourselves in the Undying Lands. Hobbits just die. Another point for elves!
~Archery is cool
~Archery is very cool
~Archery is very very cool. Okay, you get the point.
~It's very nice having fabulous hair. It really is. See, look how great my hair is.
~Being tall is nice. (this comes from a rather short person)
And thanks, Araethirion. For a moment I thought you had betrayed our side! :) *tries to high five Areathirion and Elvellon and misses both* Go elves! Erm, yeah. Now let's all be friends. :)

To Feraway Hawkbriar:
Kid, you couldn’t reach my knees if you got on a ladder, much less my chin….:D
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ten strange little coincidences:
1) Squirrels spend their lives eating, so do Hobbits.
2) Squirrels are fond of nuts and mushrooms, so are Hobbits.
3) When not eating (a rare event) squirrels play a lot, so do
Hobbits.
4) Squirrels are small, so are Hobbits.
5) Squirrels live in holes, so do Hobbits.
6) Squirrels have furry tails. Hobbits have furry feet.
7) Squirrels are cute, so are Hobbits.
8) When squirrels talk they make no sense, nor do Hobbits.
9) If given the choice squirrels will run and not fight, so will
Hobbits.
10)When cornered squirrels can be brave, so can Hobbits.
In conclusion, Hobbits are the long Lost Link between Men and
squirrels, Q.E.D.
Who says Elves don’t have a sense of humour?;) :D

Hobbits would sell their own grandmothers for a keg of ale and three biscuits. Elves pawned their birthright to chase off after someone who stole their jewelry. Dwarves wouldn't part with a penny to help their bearded children pay for a kidney transplant. Ents molest ferns. Men sleep with each others' wives while the husband is at work. Balrogs sectretly dress up as warrior-maidens and have a thing for leather.
Did I miss any? ;)
Nah, the dragons are the most pure species of Middle-Earth. Pure hatred for everything, clever and cunning, cruel and bullying like cats, ravenous in hunger and swift in anger, kings of the skies and roasters of smart-mouth, uppity eagles. lol. This message-war-type-thing is getting funny!
But I agree with FrodoFriend, Elves and Hobbits are definetly in the top two of coolest beings on Middle-Earth. Now, for a comparison between Men *shudders* and Elves [[one of you Hobbit supporters can do Men vs Hobbits]]
Men live in... houses. On ground. *falls asleep* Elves live in trees. They get a veiw of whats happening below and up high in the canopies, and watch the rythms of life in the air and on ground. Tilting your head to see ground critters isn't as bad as having to crane your neck to see birds. 1 Elves 0 Men
Men live in large cities with pollution and fighting everyday, Men are indeed a primitive specie. Now, for Elves. Elves live in wildlife areas that are aesthetically pleasing and peaceful. Who would prefer an industrial park over a luscious forest? 2 Elves 0 Men
Elves use bow and arrows. Archery is cool. Men use swords. They take a long time to make, so if yours breaks you can't support your army until its fixed, which can take a while. Elven bows can be made easily, and they still impact crucial damage. 3 Elves 0 Men.
You get the point
Now what lesser race shall we compare Elves and Hobbits to?
Rána Eressëa
02-03-2002, 02:42 PM
Dwarves are the toughest & coolest little shizznels you could ask for! Yeah, I did make that word up...
But for me, and I've already answered this before, I'd be a Half-Elfin (not Elven, I've explained that already ere in another thread); which is a crossbreed between an elf & a hobbit. I'd be the only one in existance! Haha!
Why?
Hmm, let's see (these are possibilities):
1.) If one of my parents was immortal (the Elf one), I believe I would get the choice between immortality and mortality.
2.) I'd be really swift and agile.
3.) I'd look like a stunted Elf. Hehe.
4.) Hobbit height is the best height to be.
5.) Hopefully I wouldn't have the hairy feet...
6.) I'd be the only non-home trodden Elf/Hobbit.
7.) I could hang out with Elves or Hobbits whenever I please.
8.) I'd be a tough little person no one would mess with.

Men vs. Hobbits:
Men love glory, Hobbits love food.
I didn't see any Hobbits marching to Sauron's aid!
When Hobbits are driven to fight, they fight better than men (Who took out the Witch King? That's right, a Hobbit!).
Men waste time making shoes; Hobbit go barefoot.
Hobbits can make a delicious meal out of a coney and a few herbs!
A Hobbit outsmarted Smaug (so much for dragons, ha!).
Only a Hobbit could carry the One Ring without being corrupted - not Man, Elf, Dwarf, or even Gandalf could do that!

Ahem, maybe you should reread the chapter!
The Witch King would've killed Eowyn at that moment if Merry hadn't stopped him. Merry saved Eowyn so she could kill the Witch King. So, indirectly he did kill the Witch King! Eowyn couldn't have done it without him, she would've been dead.

But seriously, the Witch King would've killed Eowyn if it hadn't been for Merry. Most likely Gandalf would've had to come, and Faramir might've been burnt alive. Many Men couldn't have done what little Merry the Halfling did!

Now for... ENTS
Elves can move around. Ents can't. Thats an obvious point for Elves.
Elves can actually talk to the other gender. Ents... can't. Hold on... is that bad or good? :p Uhhh I'll say its better to talk with the other gender. My teachers are all women, so I'd be stupid right now... not that I'm not... *stupider 2 Elves 0 Ents
Uhhhh... Elves live in trees. Ents ARE trees. Ents have no homes, no privacy! 3 - 0 Elves!
Umm... can't think of any more now, but anyway-- ELVES BEAT ENTS BIG TIME.

Go Elves! How about Elves vs. Dwarves?
Elves live in trees and forests, surrounded by other living things. Dwarves live in mountans, beneath the earth where they can't even see the sun. That's 1 for elves, 0 dwarves.
Elves have long, beautiful songs about their history. Do dwarves even sing? If they do, it would be about gold and mithril, and probably not as pretty. 2 Elves, 0 dwarves.
Elves are wise and graceful and smart, and.... Well, Dwarves are greedy and not as wise. 3 Elves, 0 dwarves.
The female:male ratio for elves are pretty much equal, or at least sensible. Now how many female elves are there? One? Maybe two? 4 elves, 0 dwarves.
Haha! Elves beat dwarves 4-0! (So what if it was all my opinion? Just pretend it wasn't.)
I could probably think of more, but soemone just reminded me that there are other things in life besides The Lord of the Rings. How dare you tell me that?! Oh well.

Middle earth is a rather dangerous place. I wouldn't want to live in a place that is exciting, but without constant danger of being overrun. I think that working in a patroll out of Rivendell would be rather fun, or acting as a ranger on patroll would be good as well. There would be plenty of exciting things to do. If something really big came up, like like if you run into an army of goblins in the misties or something, then you always have Rivendell as a place to retreat to.

Yes, if I remember it right Morgoth’s Ring is the 10th volume in the History of Middle-Earth series. As such it doesn’t tell a new story, but retells part of the Silmarillion and gives a lot of information about the Eldar and their customs.

I would be a Ranger. It would be fun. Think of the possibilities ...
Pros of being a Ranger:
- You get to be really good friends with an Istar.
- You get to go where-ever you like, whenever you like.
- You get to carry swords around.
- You get to give your swords names.
- You get to have loads of secrets ( ... that could be a con)
- You get to have loads of names.
- You get to have an Elf Lord as your Dad.
- You get to sit in bars unsettling hobbits (but I wouldn't coz I love hobbits)
Cons of being a Ranger:
- ... urm ... ???
Wait ... do you have to be a bloke to be a Ranger? Do you have to have had a tragic love history? I'm neither. Oh well ...

whoo-hoo!! me loves Men in Black!! i can't wait until July 3!! when Men in Black II comes out!!! have you seen the trailers online?!?!? ok, getting offtopic...
Race: that's a toughie. i'm too tall to be a hobbit and i can't cook, although i normally go barefoot and move silently and enjoy eating and going to parties. moving silently is also an elf trait, and although i eat like a hobbit i'm as skinny as an elf. i love archery way better than using a dagger and tall is the best. trees and hobbit holes are equally cool. i'm going to have to go with....(drumroll please) a VERTICALLY CHALLENGED ELF!!!
