Good for you! What did you think of the way it ends? (I think that qualifies as going beyond cliff-hanger!)
I think the second I finished TTT, I picked up RotK (wait...it was all in the same book...:)) And when I finished that, I read the appendices and then started the whole thing over...and now I'm in the middle of TTT again :)

After hanging around the board since it began, and, although not really effecting my modship, being a good real-life friend with ben, finally became a mod when Entmoot moved to vBulletin over the summer.

read the silmarillion - i'm reading it now for the first time. i forsook everyone who referred to it as "being as interesting as reading the dictionary" thence titling it the sillymarillion *guffaw* it's really interesting, though.

Wait! There are people who don't read the dictionary for entertainment?

The Silmarrilion boring! It's far more elegant the LOTR. The summary of the third age at the end is more exciting then large chunks of a long expected party.

I'm curious to know - what part of TT was your favourite?
Liviaine
01-24-2002, 09:46 PM
I'm almost finished. Only about 80 more pages to go. Okay, not almost, but I'm not too far.

Way to go Liviaine! Keep at it, you're coming to the best part.
Shelob!

this is my nth time (forgot how many n is) to read TTT. I'm just at the part where their trying to figure whether to trust Smeagol and go to Cirith Ungol. Although the dead marshes are important for developing a deeper understanding of the Sam's, Frodo's, and Smeagol's characters, I always found it a chore to go through.
All that muck...the way it is described, I'd think there were bodies that are still decaying and all the other stuff still under the water...yuck

My favorite part of TT is...Helm's Deep, The Dead Marshes, the part in Shelob's Lair (I cried) and...okay, well I just shouldn't try to pick a favorite part...I liked it all! And I just got THe Silmarillion! I'm really happy I finally found it-Barnes & Noble didn't have it! So, yeah, I'll read it soon...Yippee!!!!!! More about Middle-earth!

I am terrified of spiders. 8 horrible hairy legs!! Uckkk... Shelog was not my favourite part of TT, but she certainly made my skin crawl!!

I guess I'd be really frightened of spiders if I were an Aussie too. Don't they have those kinds that make your flesh rot when your bitten where you come from?

01-26-2002, 12:17 AM
Yup! We have those nasty spiders here! We call them 'white-tails' as they have (you guessed it) a white mark on the end of their bodies. In Melbourne, we also have red-backs and 'huntsman' spiders (Huntsman spiders are BIG! When fully grown they are about the size of your palm. Not poisonous, just big, hairy and horrible!)
So when ever I read about Shelob, I just try to ignore any creepy 8 legged nasties crawling across the wall!!!

I'm not sure if we have the same huntsman spiders but we do have one's that grow to palm size (because of the legs of course). The head and abdomen are about the size of your thumb. Not poisonous either.
Most of the spiders that I come across here are jumping spiders the size of a pinhead, really cute and fluffy.

My bedroom is infested with daddy long legs. Those things are so creepy...their legs are too big. But dear little WI has few abnormal deadly spiders that I know of.
I hate spiders. My biology teacher made us watch part of "Arachnophobia" as part of a test once....and I nearly cried. (This was BEFORE the written section... my nerves were definitely getting a workout that day.)

I know they are there, but I don't go looking for them! 'Cause if I do, I can hear their 8 legs tapping out "Shelob, Shelob, Shelob, Shelob, Shelob......'
Shelob is not my favourite part of TTT, but she is the scariest!!

(SPOILER)
The silmarrilon is one of the most beautiful peices of Literature. I loved the chapters concerning the creation of the Silmarils and the departure from Valinor. I came close to tears when Feanor denounced the Valar and when he is rescued by his brother at Utumno. People who refer to it as "being about as interesting as a dictionary" are IMO formulating opinions about something they don't understand.

Augh...this angers me. I am only halfway between FOTR. Not bad for only having it three days though :) I plan to have it done by this weekend. Then on to TTT, and I can actually make a useful post in this thread!

It took me three readings of the Silmarillion before I was finally able to start getting a vision of the wholeness of the work in detailing Tolkien's created world. In conjunction with Unfinished Tales, it describes a world one can get really get swept up in. (I'm sleepy, so if this post doesn't mnake sense, skip it. :D ) Good night, all, from suburban Noo Yawk.

Good afternoon to you Ragamuffin. Congrats to gdl96 for finishing TTT. Im presently trying to finish the Silmarillion.( Im at the chapter on the lays of Beleriand) I really liked the part where Merry and Pippin meet the ents too. What they did to Saruman's place was great! I also liked the chapter "Of Herbs and Stewed rabbit", the dead marshes, Shelob's lair and the part where Frodo and Sam talk about how great tales never end. Loved it all!:D (sorry about that bunch of silly ramblings)

i know this post is a bit late but i just wanted to say that it's true - there are loads of deadly spiders in australia. just last week i had to kill a red back under the barbeque after it had killed a small LIZARD that got stuck in its web! i almost cried i'm so scared of spiders and red backs are pretty fatal! as for huntsmen i think they're kind of comical. they usually keep out of your way up on the roof, they stay outdoors and they sometimes have their legs in funny positions. hairy louts :)

I have read somewhere that a person swallows an average of 8 spiders in their lifetime (i.e. while sleeping with mouth open and spider crawls into mouth) :D ... I like spiders... but I don't like to have them for breakfast... or second breakfast... or luncheon....
anyway, I finished ROTK yesterday... for the 5th time... but I never read the appendix so I guess I'm not truly finished.
