In response to your question, he was driving the Necromancer out of Mirkwood with the rest of the White Council. I would say more but I don't know how far you've read.

It says who he is in the chapter 'The Council of Elrond' in FOTR.

Aye. You should read it more carefully.
If I remember correctly, the Necromancer is mentioned thrice in Hobbit, and last time, in end of the book, when Bilbo and Gandalf are back at Rivendell, Bilbo finds out, that Gandalf had been at White Council, which had driven Necromancer away from his fortress of Dol Guldur (thoguh the name of the place isn't mentioned).

I remeber he was mentioned in both The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring but I never knew how he was defeted. I guess I have to go back to that part. Well, he was actually planning to move to Morder, and the White Concil didn't really defeat him.
