View Full Version : Favourite Valar?
webwizard333

My favourite Valar would have to be Aule. He created the substances of earth and devised many new things for the world. I also liked how he didn't mind sharing his secrets to the Noldor, and how he gave freely to all. He's sort of like what Melkor might have been if he had not been so corrupted by hate.
Whose your favourite Valar?

I have two: Nienna and Yavanna. I mean, if I was a Maia I'd serve those two. Their realms of authority go with my interests and values very well.

Varda, and Yavanna. Because Varda made the stars, and if you're an Elf like myself than Varda is the girl. Yavanna for all the pretty growing things and the Two Trees. You should have seen them. They were beautiful.;)

Ulmo of course! :D

Orome. The hunter of monsters. He loved Middle Earth most and left it unwillingly. He loved dogs and horses, trees and forests. If he was less strong than Tulkas, he was more terrible in his dispatch of the fell beasts he hunted in Iluvatar's Middle Earth. He'd even been known to appear in the earlier days of Middle Earth with his dogs and horses blowing his great horn rustling up a few nasties. He was a regular Balrog-kicking, Melkor-cleaning machine! I'd love to see and hear a Balrog haul ass as he squeals away in the dark abyss in terror of Orome's whip. Yeah, maybe there will be a Jackson-level film or two for The Sil. Oh yeah!

Ulmo for me too! He's lord of the seas! And he's different from the other Valar, more reclusive and independent. Varda is of course cool as well. :)

Tulkas.

Tulkas, definitely. He was a barrel of laughs.

I like Ulmo.
He's more independent, but he's one of the good guys. He may not be hanging out with the other valar alot, but he has a very good relationship with the elves, especially the sea elves.
Sirithdal

Yes, deep and fathomless are his thoughts which run often to the rivers and rills and he speaks to those who dwell in Middle-earth with voices that are heard only as the music of water.

The best of Valar is Manwe because he has the most influence of all the valar.

Nienna who cares for all and Nessa of whom I wish she had been more prominent in the silmarillion. Although Ulmo is one of my favorites too.

01-29-2002, 11:44 PM
sorry sirithdal, you must have me mixed with someone else.
valar , ainur , whats the diff.
Mandos, but not by far. He seemed to be the most wise because he was somewhat removed from Arda, if you catch my meaning.
Remember when the Valar decided to summon the Elves to Valinor and Mandos said "So it is doomed"? That's all. It took me a second time reading it to see how prognostic his statements were. He said little, but it was like a revelation that doesn't make sense until it happens.
Curufinwe
02-08-2002, 04:39 PM
You've got to love Mandos. His knowledge, prophesies, killer stuff man. Nor did he ever seek to increase his own power over others or speak the future unless bidden by Manwe.

My favorite Valar has to be Melkor/Morgoth. He was the mightiest of the Valar, and the entire company of his younger "siblings" could not really kick his hinder. Melkie-boy ran roughshod over all of Middle-Earth for centuries, swatting pesky elves and men out of his way and in general causing the entire population east of the Belfalas loose the contents of their bowels any time he even THOUGHT about coming out his house to patrol the hood.

I am so splilt between:
Ulmo: god of the seas, loner, helper of teleri, visitation of tuor
tulkas: wrestler dude, loved beating up melkor, barrel of laughs
orome: discovered elves, led them to the island, monster hunter, horse rider
so hard to choose, I thought manwe was too poncy and aule does not have much to do with story after creating dwarves, (correct me if wrong)

Mine would have to be Tulkas - he wasnt afraid of anything and laughed in the face of Melkor himself :):p

Wayfarer

In order:
Nienna
Ulmo
Orome
Manwe
Varda
It seems like those five were the only ones who didn't abandon middle earth.
Nienna emphathized for everybody there.
Ulmo's power was throught the water, and his thought was always with the free people.
Orome was really pissed when they withdrew, and used to go hunting in middle earth when the other valar were hiding away.
Manwe and Varda could see/hear almost everything that went on, and they acted (directly or indirectly) throughout history.
Radagast The Brown
02-16-2002, 03:32 PM
but Yavanna didn't abandon Middle Earth too.
my favorites are:
Ulmo, Manwe and Tulkas because
Ulmo-he always helped the elves
Manwe-he was the smartest
Tulkas-he was the bravest and because he loughed in Melkor's face
Ñólendil
02-17-2002, 06:29 PM
Your favorite Vala is Nienna, Shannon? You're sensitive? No way ...
Radagast, I do not agree that Tulkas was brave. In my opinion bravery is about overcoming your fears, facing them, doing things even though you are afraid, things like that. Tulkas was fearless. He was mighty and powerful and full of extroardinary ability, but I do not think he was brave.

I have already identified my favorite (masculine) Valar to be Orome, but I am remiss. While I admire the hunter of monters and fell beasts, I love Vana, the spouse of Orome.
"Vana, the ever young; she is the younger sister of Yavanna. All flowers spring as she passes and open if she glances upon them; and all birds sing at her coming."

Somebody earlier said Aule. Aule sucks.
After all, he taught Sauron and Saruman. He also made dwarves. Nobody needs dwarves. Kidding.
Somebody also earlier said that the entire entourage of his "siblings" wasn't enough to take on Melkor. Actually, the rest of the Valar were concentrating their powers on keeping the world in order, limiting and fixing the damage that Melkor was doing - had they concentrated on ridding Arda of the Dark Lord they would - hey presto they did.
Henceforth Melkor, who had actually transfered most of his power into the earth and his fellow evildoers, was not really as powerful as many thought he was (although when Iluvatar first conceieved of him, he was the most powerful).

Aule doesn't suck - I was just joking...
I have no doubt that Melkor was created the mightiest being. However, I believe that after Ungoliant drank the sap of the trees and consumed the silmarils, she became the most powerful being. Melkor was continually growing weaker and weaker.

MasterMothra > what if Morgoth had created a One-Ring ?? hmmm.... Well, Ungoliant didn't consume the Silmarils. It was actually a handful of petty jewels that Morgoth swiped from Formenos. Morgoth would not offer up the Silmarils to Ungoliant.

that would be interesting indeed anduril.
remember the marvel comics series "what if.."
they need one for the sil.
sister is right, ungy had some fakes, morg would never give the sils to anyone. when feanor slammed the door on morg, morg had already taken the sils. so the references to morgoth being the mightiest being in ea, are after the raping of the sils and the destroying of the two trees.
i think that morgoth grew more powerful before his unfortunate, and totally unjustified imprisoning in the darkness. bum rap, wish johnny cocharan would have been around then.

What about Orome Ringbearer? He was the one who found the Elves by the shores of Cuiviénen and named them the People of the Stars in their own tongue, before leading them on the Great Journey to the Blessed Realm. He has strong Elvish connections, like Varda. He was one of the few Valar who received a Sindarin name too: Araw.

Makamu, I really want to know, why do you like Vaire? she did nothing special, no? [/B]
Nope, she didn't do anything special, but I like her, because of the way I imagine her work: She is the one, who weaves the memories of elves and men. Since I am a huge elf fan, I think that she does a very important job to help the Eldar preserve things (or situations) through time. Without her, there would be no songs and no stories, because nobody would remember anything and the river time would flow everything away. The love of Beren and Luthien, the radiance of the Silmarils, the folly of Feanor, all this would be forgotten if the elves couldn't remember it! Life and eternity would wash past them, without the least bit of significance, because they would have no memory to keep a hold of things.
See how important Vaire is, Radagast? She may not be as important as, say, Varda, on first glance, but if you think about it, Vaire is just as important.:)

But he was still a Vala, when they entered Arda, right? Would make sense to me, because without him the four elements are not complete: Manwe (Air), Aule (earth) and Ulmo (water). So he was a Vala once and the question doesn't say that we are not talking about those Ainur, who originally were the Valar at the beginning of Ea.

I like Vaire because she's a mysterious Vala. Not much is said about her, except she weaves. Weaving a tapestry, if you don't know, takes a long time. Now, if she made tapestries to clothe the halls of Mandos which are ever growing... that's a lot of coffee. I agree with Makamu. Námo
09-16-2002, 05:23 AM
Námo wins, just a little infront of Manwë, because:
1. Námo seems wise and powerfukl in his actions.
2. Námo is not evil, yet not good either....
3. Námo is the doomsman of the valar, and the harbringer of fate !
4. Námo has his spouse Vairë, who is supposed to be a good one.
5. Námo is alittle different from the others and try too keep alittle away from them, just look at where he's home is placed !
And why Manwë came close :
Námo only take orders from Manwë, and wont do anything unordered, well, not much that is......

Varda, because I have always loved stars. (Venus was really bright the other night, and I thought of Earendil in his ship.)
Also Manwë, because I like the part where Manwë grants Melkor pardon because he though that "the evil of Melkor was cured." I like how Tolkien describes Manwë - "For Manwë was free from evil, and could not comprehend it ... " Although he learned from hard experience later on that Melkor was NOT cured - "all love had departed from him for ever."
And lots of others, but I have to go to work now... *sigh*

You can't have good without evil, and when Melkor started going off on his own, there was a lot of good. He was necessary to the balance of life. He was also a "character foil" for Manwe. Melkor didn't start out so bad, but he went from rebellious to cruel. I can see why people like him, but he's not my favourite.
I like:
1. Aule (e umlot) because he created the Dwarves, and how cool is that

I think it was about 4 nights ago, but I don't remember for sure. Venus will be visible for a few months over here, but I'm not smart enough to know what you would see there in Israel compared to what I see in California. Sometimes you see Venus at night, sometimes in the morning, but it is always very bright, and usually pretty low on the horizion (no higher than a third of the way up or so, over here). You probably need to check with a local astronomy website. Maybe we can see the same things, because I think we're roughly the same latitude.
I don't understand why you would like Melkor so much, though - are you just kind of being funny? He wanted to take over the world, but only for his own selfish and destructive motives.

Melkor didn't start out so bad, but he went from rebellious to cruel. I can see why people like him, but he's not my favourite.I agree.

Well, Melkor was certainly needed for the story, or it would be a lot shorter! As Tolkien says in the Hobbit: Now it is a strange thing, but things that are good to have and days that are good to spend are soon told about, and not much to listen to; while things that are uncomfortable, palpitating, and even gruesome, may make a good tale, and take a deal of telling anyway.
I would agree that you can't have good without evil in a story like this one, but would not agree with that statement overall.

I'm not sure which I like more, Ulmo or Varda. Sea and the stars.
Both are rather fitting (having been a sailor in real life).
As to the Maiar, what about Olorin?

Are you starting a Melkor fan club? If so, I'd like to join:) Anyway I agree w/ what was said about the balance between good and evil. I believe that both are needed in order for there to be harmony. A pictoral represation of this would be the yin yang.
By the way, thanx for the nice welcome messages. Things like that make me feel good:)

Hey, Nurvingiel - pretty avatar! I can't read it, though - what does it say? (or is it just for looks?) And congrats on becoming a Hobbit :) And welcome from me, too, Sparky :) Is the "Ni" from Monty Python's classic movie?
And let me add Ulmo to my list (Manwe and Varda mentioned in my previous post). I like how it says he "loves both Elves and Men, and never abandoned them, not even when they lay under the wrath of the Valar." And I LOVE that section where Iluvatar trumps Melkor by turning bitter cold into something that makes the lovely snow and frost, and unrestrained heat into something that makes the clouds, and the mist, and the rain, "and in these clouds thou art drawn nearer to Manwe, thy friend, whom thou lovest."

Good evening! Thank you for the warm welcome. Finding out about the various threads will prove interesting I'm sure!
Reading back it seems we are naming favourite Valar. I can't say I have a favourite character in any of the books (although I named a few in the 'profile'). Each seems relevant in their own way and contribute to the whole individually. BUT, I am very fond of Varda and Yavanna.
I have often felt sympathetic toward Melkor. It is certainly a grave responsibility to originate 'sin' (so to speak). One wonders if Feanor would have eventually manifested greed and anger had there not been a Melkor?
I especially like the bit between Aule, Yavanna, and Manwe. Aule remarks that the Elves, Dwarves and Men will need wood and cut down 'her' trees. Going to Manwe, Yavanna eventually comes away with the promise of Shepards (Ents presumably). Aule simply says no matter, wood will still be needed. I am touched by her compassion and recognition of all living beings having importance and then Aule's pragmatic understanding of the nature of evolution. Quite provocative.
Have any of you read the conclusion of the Quenta Silmarillion in the Lost Road? There is an account of the End of Melkor.

Ealenwe - interesting bit about the end of Melkor - I had never heard of it before. I guess I'll have to trot over to the bookstore and check it out. As of now, I only (!) have LoTR, Sil, Letters, and Morgoth's Ring. I sure wish the HoME books were less expensive!
WoTJ and PoME are currently at the top of my wish list. Do you have Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien? REALLY good, IMHO!

Not meaning to discourage you from acquiring the Lost Road, of course, but the account is as follows:
Thus spake Mandos in prophecy, when the Gods sat in judgement in Valinor, and the rumour of his words was whispered among all the Elves of the West. When the world is old and the pPowers grow weary, the Morgoth, seeing that the guard sleepeth, shall come back through the Door of Night out of the Timeless Void, and he shall destroy the Sun and Moon. But Earendel shall descend upon him as a white and searing flame and drive him from the airs. Then shall the Last Battle be gathered on the fields of Valinor. In that day Tulkus shall strive with Morgoth, and on his right hand shall be Fionwe, and on his left, Turin Turambar, son of Hurin, coming from the halls of Mandos; and the black sword of Turin shall deal unto Morgoth his death and final end; and so shall the children of Hurin and all Men be avenged.
Thereafter shall Earth be broken and re-made; and the Silmarils shall be recovered out of Air and Earth and Sea; for Earendel shall descend and surrender that flame which he hath had in keeping. Then Feanor shall take the Three Jewels and bear them to Yavanna Palurien; and she will break them and with their fire rekindle the Two Trees, and a great light shall come forth. And the Mountains of Valinor shall be levelled, so that the Light shall go out over all the world. In that light the Gods will grow young again, and the Elves awake and all their dead arise, and the purpose of Iluvatar be fulfilled concerning them. But of Men in that day the prophecy of Mandos doth not speak, and no Man it names, save Turin only, and to him a place is given among the sons of the Valar.

Thanks for the excerpt, Ealenwe. And that's where the Turin thing comes in, too - I had heard about it, but didn't know where it was. I wonder why Tolkien chose Turin? A topic for a whole new thread, I suppose... I always liked how his dad was so steadfast. What a sad story.

uh, I have to pick up this topic again.
Lords of the Valar
• Manwë Súlimo
• Ulmo
• Aulë the Smith
• Oromë
• Mandos (Námo)
• Lórien (Irmo)
• Tulkas Astaldo
Queens of the Valar (Valier)
• Varda Elentári
• Yavanna Kementári
• Nienna
• Estë the Gentle
• Vairë the Weaver
• Vána the Ever-young
• Nessa
I think I like Varda the best. She made the stars. that was always very impressive to me.

I like all Valar (even Melkor), recalling the books. Every Valar fits in his place, thaks to the great author.
But for private "use":
Varda - when I'm working in planetarium
Ulmo - driving down our lokal river in a boat
Aulë - when I'm creating sculpures
Yavanna - working in my garden
Nienna - when I'm unhappy
Nessa - when I'm so happy, that I like to dance
Estë - when when I take care of hurt animals
Seriously, I'm not praying to them, but somtimes I think about Tolkiens Valar doing those things/work.

I have liked Ulmo and Varda. Varda, the Lady of the Stars. In light is her power and her joy. I also like Ulmo, because as the Lord of Waters he can pretty much go anywhere. He is independent and although he is described as being second in might to Manwe he is caring. He loves Elves and Men and never abandoned them. I just like the ocean and the stars.
Lollypopgurl

I like Yavanna. :D Manwë's cool too. Eagles rule.
My answer seems obvious. Ulmo because of his great might, wisdom, somewhat detached personality, dedication to the children of Eru, and magnificence. I think he gets some of the best characterization attention of the Valar from Tolkien. The first two selections are from the published Silmarillion; the second is from Unfinished Tales. The UT version of 'Of Tuor and His Coming to Gondolin' has some powerful writing in it.
Ulmo is the Lord of Waters. He is alone. He dwells nowhere long, but moves as he will in all the deep waters about the Earth or under the Earth. He is next in might to Manwë, and before Valinor was made he was closest to him in friendship; but thereafter he went seldom to the councils of the Valar, unless great matters were in debate. For he kept all Arda in thought, and he has no need of any resting-place. Moreover he does not love to walk upon land, and will seldom clothe himself in a body after the manner of his peers. If the Children of Eru beheld him they were filled with a great dread; for the arising of the King of the Sea was terrible, as a mounting wave that strides to the land, with dark helm foam-crested and raiment of mail shimmering from silver down into shadows of green. The trumpets of Manwë are loud, but Ulmo's voice is deep as the deeps of the ocean which he only has seen.
Nonetheless Ulmo loves both Elves and Men, and never abandoned them, not even when they lay under the wrath of the Valar. At times he win come unseen to the shores of Middle-earth, or pass far inland up firths of the sea, and there make music upon his great horns, the Ulumúri, that are wrought of white shell; and those to whom that music comes hear it ever after in their hearts, and longing for the sea never leaves them again. But mostly Ulmo speaks to those who dwell in Middle-earth with voices that are heard only as the music of water. For all seas, lakes, rivers, fountains and springs are in his government; so that the Elves say that the spirit of Ulmo runs in all the veins of the world. Thus news comes to Ulmo, even in the deeps, of all the needs and griefs of Arda, which otherwise would be hidden from Manwë.
But Ulmo was alone, and he abode not in Valinor, nor ever came thither unless there were need for a great council; he dwelt from the beginning of Arda in the Outer Ocean, and still he dwells there. Thence he governs the flowing of all waters, and the ebbing, the courses of an rivers and the replenishment of Springs, the distilling of all dews and rain in every land beneath the sky. In the deep places he gives thought to music great and terrible; and the echo of that music runs through all the veins of the world in sorrow and in joy; for it joyful is the fountain that rises in the sun, its springs are in the wells of sorrow unfathomed at the foundations of the Earth. The Teleri learned much of Ulmo, and for this reason their music has both sadness and enchantment. Salmar came with him to Arda, he who made the horns of Ulmo that none may ever forget who once has heard them; and Ossë and Uinen also, to whom he gave the government of the waves and the movements of the Inner Seas, and many other spirits beside. And thus it was by the power of Ulmo that even under the darkness of Melkor life coursed still through many secret lodes, and the Earth did not die; and to all who were lost in that darkness or wandered far from the light of the Valar the ear of Ulmo was ever open; nor has he ever forsaken Middle-earth, and whatsoever may since have befallen of ruin or of change he has not ceased to take thought for it, and will not until the end of days.
;)
[quote] Now Tuor felt his feet drawn to the sea-strand, and he went down by long stairs to a wide shore upon the north side of Taras-ness; and as he went he saw that the sun was sinking low into a great black cloud that came up over the rim of the darkening sea; and it grew cold, and there was a stirring and murmur as of a storm to come. And Tuor stood upon the shore, and the sun was like a smoky fire behind the menace of the sky; and it seemed to him that a great wave rose far off and rolled towards the land, but wonder held him, and he remained there unmoved. And the wave came towards him, and upon it lay a mist of shadow. Then suddenly as it drew near it curled, and broke, and rushed forward in long arms of foam; but where it had broken there stood dark against the rising storm a living shape of great height and majesty.
What? A character limit? Anyway... there it is.

1st - i'm torn between varda and yavanna because both had such a naturistic influence on the environment where ever they go, be it in middle earth or valinor... i love stars and i've wondered what the stars of varda would look like in the sky... plus the two trees, telperion and laurelin i always wonder about... (ok, i'm a girl, so i'm gushy about pretty things like that)
2nd - manwe, because he sees, knows, and feels almost everything that went on and he possessed great wisdom...
3rd - ulmo, the god of water, what can i say? i can only imagine the strength he possesses with the waters of the world... along with orome, he was always around to help the elves during their tumultuous times
4th - orome, the monster hunter... not only did he first discovered the elves but he also did as much as he could to help and protect them from the evils that melkor was brewing up.

MELKOR!!!:p lol nah,
I'd have to say definately Ulmo and Nienna: Ulmo being the Lord of Waters, and I LOVE Water & the Sea; and Nienna I think is kind of the spirit of humanity (as it were - I don't know what the Valar would call it): she is most acquainted with mourning and sorry, pity and patience - traits essential to an idolly 'humane' and wise person.

Ulmo - As has been said, he never forsook the children of Iluvatar, even when they were exiled and cursed.
Yavanna - Was instrumental in preparing ME for the Children of Illuvatar. Without her there are no olvar and kelvar. And people starve to death.
Nienna - Understands the sorrow of living in a fallen world.
Nessa - Music and dance...with sorrow must also come joy.
Vaire, Namo, Irmo....all of these are pretty intriguing...wish they had larger roles in the Silm.

This is a toughy. I'd have to say Varda and Manwë are awesome rulers. I like Ulmo because he's a loner (like me ;)) Tulkas is awesome because he's so into battling. Aulë's awesome because he created the Dwarves. Yavanna is probably my favorite of the Valier, because she created the Ents. But my ultimate favorite is Melkor. Without him, there would be no evil, and without evil there would be no good. And without both good and evil there wouldn't be a story, and that wouldn't be good.
