View Full Version : Origin of a Name (User Name)

emplynx
01-20-2002, 04:32 PM
I have seen some discussion in other threads about user names. I made this thread for people to tell the origin of theirs.
The one I use on this forum is emplynx. It comes from the computer stragety game Outpost 2. The Lynx was a form of a assult vehicle and the EMP (electromagnetic pulse) was a weapon you could have on it. Hence, emplynx.

Look in the archives there was a post with the same purpose in there I suggest looking at it for some of the older users names.

Mine is Quneyan for Carden the Mightiest Dwarf

Renille
01-20-2002, 05:25 PM
My name was one of those spur of the moment things...I had a longer one, but I didn't like it. So I shortened it to Renille, which I liked alot better.

My name is the shortened verison of my email address (justwatchingthefireworks) which comes from the name of a song by Jimmy Eat World, a favortie band of mine. The song is Just Watch the Fireworks, and its very pretty. =) The number is just random.

Considering you have him in your bed and all...

Alethes
01-20-2002, 06:03 PM
I think Alethes is Greek for truth, true, or some form of the word.

I like the way it sounds (or at least the way I pronounce it, since I can't speak Greek) and the meaning, so I just picked it for my username.

My user name comes from a New Jersey legend dating back from the early 1700's. Supposedly in 1735 a woman - Mrs. Leeds of Smithville was having a 13th child. She was tired of having children and cursed it during childbirth and said "I wish it was the devil" At which point when the child was born it sprouted wings - killed several people in the birthing room and flew out the window. Ever since it has terrorized and been seen thourghout Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York. There are of course several variations on the legend - but that its the most common one.

The devil stilll resides in New Jersey within the forests of the Pine Barrens that cover nearly 1/3 of New Jersey. We used to tell horror stories about the Jersey Devil on the school bus - so I decided to use it as my user name. Also because I love New Jersey.

That, by the way, in case peope don't know - is why our professional hockey team is called the New Jersey Devils. It has nothing to do with the satanic variety - although I am waiting for an outcry from the hard core religious people.

If you want more info - check out this website -Devil Hunters (http://home.adelphia.net/%7Eleuter/index.html)

Also there is a cool movie called the Last Broadcast - it came before The Blair Witch Project and is much better - but it's about a couple of people in search of the New Jersey Devil.
Last Broadcast DVD (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00001WY86/qid%3D1011572458/ref%3Dsr%5F11%5F0%5F1/002-4022764-1588810)

Oh here's a website for the Pine Barrens - for those that think that NJ is just paved from end to end and has no trees. NJ Pine Barrens (http://www.state.nj.us/pinelands/pnrpc.htm)

Huh...

Wayfarer comes from the name of my Middle earth character, Edrandir the Far-traveled. That's something like 'Lone Wanderer' i.e. Wayfarer.

Fartraveler

There are some interesting ways to divide that into syllables.

samwise of the shire
01-21-2002, 09:24 PM
Because my favorite character is Sam Gamgee (When I used to go the Barrowdowns) I tried to put my name as just Sam but there was somebody over there who already had that name so I decided to add his homeland into my handle and thus Samwise Of The Shire.
Sam

Arathorn
01-22-2002, 04:46 AM
obviously, mine comes from the fact that someone beat me to Aragorn.

Also, seeing that Arathorn gets good airtime during big Aragorn moments ("I am Aragorn son of...") it seemed to the next best thing

Aragorn
01-22-2002, 08:10 AM
Hehe, you're too slow you old gaffer, it's not my fault! Obviously my name means cheese in Spanish! :D

Lightice
01-22-2002, 09:04 AM
My last name resembles Lightice, in Finnish. It doesn't mean it, though, but I've adapted it as my tag in most places of the web.

Arathorn

I didn't know it meant cheese it spanish. I thought Queso did.

The origin of my user name is in my custom signature.

Laurelyn
01-23-2002, 10:23 PM
My real name is Laura, but I don't like it much for me. Sorry to folk's who do like it- it's pretty, but sometimes it just doesn't suit me. But anyway, it's derived from the name of the laurel plant, and I'm really into plants. And I like names w/ y in the spelling, so I turned all that into Laurelyn. It's the alias I use for my writing when I use myself as a character, and my usernames for things are usually Sterling Silver or Laurelyn. I picked Laurelyn this time around b/c in the Silmarillion one of the two trees of Valinor is named Laurelin (pure coincidence) and as this is a Tolkien site . . . There, I have told you more than you ever wanted to know about my username.

Sakata
01-23-2002, 11:40 PM
Sakata Trueshot is my character on the online rpg EverQuest, I made the name up myself so I can use it pretty much everywhere on the net and it is not taken. I have been using it so long, I have actually gotten snail mail addressed to Sakata Trueshot!

ryan
01-24-2002, 12:46 AM
My name is a bit more complex than some of your names.

You see, my name is actually a shortened version of ryan6233, which consists of ryan (my name) + 6 (lucky number) + 233 (the price a grenade sells for in a game i was playing at the time). 6233 is also the number of times our president has mispronounced the word "terror".

LOL! And that number is rising every day.

Nimrodel
01-24-2002, 09:10 AM
I thought that it was a pretty name, and it had a tragic backstory to it, like I'm an elf who had a river named after me and my lover waited for me on a ship for ages because I was tarrying in the mountains, but then he jumped ship trying to get back to me and was lost forever more. It was a name that wasn't easily identifiable, only fans would get it. But now I'm sorta regretting it, I mean it's too close to NIMROD for comfort, but what can I do?

mY REAL name is michelle, and I am fair in my desisions of the world :) :)

spidersbane
01-24-2002, 04:41 PM
Mine comes of the inscription on Sting. "Maengus is my name, I am the Spiders bane."

Anthy Rose
01-24-2002, 11:35 PM
Let's see...Anthy came from the anime (japanese animation) Shoujo Kakumei Utena. I like the name, think it's pretty. I added the Rose when in college my friends wanted me to play D&D with them. Anthy Rose the elven assassin. ^^;;;

Laurelyn
01-25-2002, 07:59 AM
It is indeed pretty, Anthy Rose.

Talera
01-25-2002, 10:50 AM
I figured as I'm a fairly new board member that all the LOTR related names would have gone so I chose Talera. Talera is the name of a character in The Wars of Light and Shadows by Janny Wurts. She gives the meaning as Branch or Fork in a Path. It doesn't have any relevance to me as a person and I don't identify with the character. I guess basically I just liked the name!

sun-star
01-25-2002, 04:47 PM
I wanted to be Elanor as it's (close enough) my real name - as well as being Sam's beautiful baby! - but sun-star is what it means, and it sounds ok.

Marille
01-28-2002, 02:44 PM
Well, my real name is Megan. And Megan means "Pearl" and in Quenya Pearl translates into "Marilla" and you would have to replace the "a" at the end of it with a "e" to make it a feminine name and you get Marille. ;)

athelas
01-29-2002, 03:51 PM
<----- I don't know why on Earth I chose "Athelas". I think I was reading the part on Aragorn at the houses of healing that day, and he was using athelas to heal the injured, so I guess it just popped up in my head.

Coming to think of it, I wish I had chosen a nicer name. Never mind though...:)

Nariel Starfire
02-07-2002, 05:42 PM
"Nar" is Sindarin for fire

"El" is Sindarin for Star.

When translating, I got confused and put "Starshine" instead of "Starfire". Now I want to change it.

Starr Polish
02-10-2002, 12:00 AM
My name is derived from a bit of poetry type stuff I did a long time ago for my meager writing website. It goes like this, and it is copyrighted to me, so YOU CANT TAKE IT! (paranoia)

I am a star in my own universe, shining brightly, but when you put me next to everyone else, I look quite dim. Does anyone have any polish?

The reason I have two r's is because when I went to put up my AIM name, Star Polish was already taken, and then I decided it looked pretty with two r's and have used it on nearly everything.

Rána Eressëa
04-03-2002, 02:06 PM
Ooh, goody. I get to add my nick to the list. :D

After I saw the movie I started actually thinking about creating my own character in J.R.R. Tolkien's world. Therefore, since I loved hobbits and elves (and maybe thought Frodo could use a girlfriend, perhaps?) my imaginary character looked like a 4-foot-tall Elf. Since that was odd, I decided I'd make her a crossbreed: half-hobbit, half-elf. It had never been heard of before I believe, so I figured she'd be exiled and that would make her bitter and angry, and I wondered what people would call her then. So it hit me: Rogue. And she still looked like an Elf (especially from far away, which is the only way people survive if spotting her ;) ) so the Men would call her Rogue Elf. For obvious reasons: not staying with her kind the Elves, and by legend killing those she comes across.

I've long since made quite a few changes to her. And now she has a name the Elves call her: Rána Eressëa. Rána means "wanderer" and Eressëa means "lonely". Hence, "Lonely Wanderer". Yeah, that's about it for now. :)

Taking a name from an actual character didn't appeal to me. My obsession w/ tolkien lies in his ingenuity as a storyteller, and I randomly quote lines from the book that are not dialogue, but his narrative.
I also wasn't comfortable with an elvish name, b/c my personality is definately more hobbitish (ie small town girl).

To tell the truth, I thought of none of this while I was registering. I only analyzed my choice as I was reading this thread. I think I liked the word b/c it is rather "star dust and Anne-of-Green-Gablesish" (to quote my sister)--kind of like my AIM screenname, and my email addy. (windypoplars)

Mine is actually a long story, I'll try to make it short and clear. A friend and I started writing some fanfiction to impress each other with our Tolkienknowledge. We wrote each other english letters (to improve our English) using runes (to improve our runewriting off course:D ) We created each a character in Middle-Earth that were well, actually US in Middle-Earth. Mine was Eärniel. It was a simple name but it stuck immediatly. Since then I had a lot of fun with Eärniel from getting weird looks when saying Eärniel is my nickname to a teacher believing it to be a term of Physics and that I was using it to cheat on a exam:D

So I am the nazgul Queen!!!

Goatee
04-03-2002, 08:55 PM
Nazgul Queen, you need an Avatar! I hope you don't mind as soon as I saw your name, an image popped in my head, so I made this.

Khamûl
04-03-2002, 11:38 PM
Well, I looked all through Lord of the Rings to find a suitable nickname, and nothing came to me. I was looking for the actual name of the Lord of the Nazgûl, but apparently he doesn't have one. Khamûl is the second in command of the Nazgûl, and at one time controlled Dol Goldur (sp). I figured that it was pretty cool, so I used it.

TinuvielChild
04-04-2002, 12:00 AM
well, mine is pretty simple: my fave character (at the time) was Luthien Tinuviel (i still love the name Tinuviel, it means nightingale), and by law, i am still (technically) a child. also, originally, i didn't realize that Luthien had had no female children (oops!), but that's ok. i kinda tried to cover that fact that i later discovered by claiming that it was either the above reason, or Tinuviel as a child. now you know...the rest of the story. :D

BeardofPants
04-04-2002, 12:50 AM
All the tolkien ones were taken when I was trying to sign on, so I stuck to my usual screen name "BeardofEvil" (after noticing that all the evil guys have beards). Unfortunately, it didn't work, and I couldn't post. So, I created another one, after the Pants game, which was the first thread that I wandered into. Hence, BeardofPants.

My name is the name of a constellation of stars in the northern hemisphere, although I can't see it from where I live. I chose it because it is pretty and I like astronomy. I also chose it because it is the name of Frodos girlfriend in the funny parody of LOTR available at
http://flyingmoose.org/tolksarc/book.htm#toc (http://flyingmoose.org/tolksarc/book/book.htm#toc)

The parody is much better than Bored of the Rings, but not yet finished.

Cassiopeia, do you know that your name is also a type of jellyfish? I live on a houseboat and we have cassiopeia all over the sea floor around us. Don't worry though, they're actually quite pretty and they don't hurt too bad. :D

My name: I was looking for a name for entmoot, fotR was sitting on my desk, and I opened it randomly to the Gildor chapter where Frodo watches Menelvagor, the Swordsman of the Sky (equivalent of Orion to us), rise over the horizon. I liked it. Since then I have taken to writing an 'm' tengwa with four dot's surrounding it (something on of my friends made up; a black dot=darkness; m tengwa with dots=Menelvagor with darkness all around= kinda cool :D ) on homework papers instead of my name. By now some of my teachers have started recognizing me by it!

Earniel
04-05-2002, 05:34 AM
The constellation Cassiopeia is named after a queen in one of the Greek myths. She was the mother of Andromeda a very beautiful girl. Cassiopeia's vanity angered the Gods so they decided to punish her by making her sacrifice Andromeda to some monster. I believe Perseus rescued her. Correct me if I'm wrong.

The constellation also has an elvish name, i read it somewhere, can't remember. The yellyfish avatar is a cool idea. You'll get a lot of people asking where your avatar comes from.:D

I have NO idea, this is what the dictionary said:

av·a·tar Pronunciation Key (v-tär)
n.

1. The incarnation of a Hindu deity, especially Vishnu, in human or animal form.
2. An embodiment, as of a quality or concept; an archetype: the very avatar of cunning.
3. A temporary manifestation or aspect of a continuing entity: occultism in its present avatar.

[Sanskrit avatra, descent (of a deity from heaven), avatar : ava, down + tarati, he crosses; see ter-2 in Indo-European Roots.]

Avatar

\Av`a*tar"\, n. [Skr. avat[^a]ra descent; ava from + root t[.r] to cross, pass over.] 1. (Hindoo Myth.) The descent of a deity to earth, and his incarnation as a man or an animal; -- chiefly associated with the incarnations of Vishnu.

2. Incarnation; manifestation as an object of worship or admiration

Welcome to Hinduism 101.
Accoding to Hindu legend, the world we live in is Vishnu's dream. When he wakes up...well, what happens to your dreams when you wake up? exactly. We'll all wink out like so many candles on a cake. There are avatars of Vishnu. That is, he incarnates himself into his own dream world, in various forms. Half-fish half-man, a dwarf-like creature that slayed demons, etc. Buddha is also purported to be one of the avatars of Vishnu. Krishna (as in the Hare Krishna religion) is also one of Vishnu's avatars. In all, there will be ten avatars of Vishnu. Nine have come, and after the tenth one passes, Vishnu will wake up.
It gets more complicated than that, but that's basically it. and now you know. Don't you feel as SMRT as me now?

The word avatar does indeed come from buddhism (hey I finally know something, let's milk it some more) An avatar is a form of appearence. (wild guess coming up but what the heck:))That's why these pictures are called avatars. They show the way you want to appear and you don't have to use a picture that isn't you.

Well, i have so many different nicknames its confusing! im glad i only have to explain one.

But Elfmaster XK originated from my name Xenoia Karris. This is my pen-name created and owned by me!hehe! i use it a lot in my writing. The elfmaster bit is to make it vaguely relevent to LotR, and besides, elves rule!

Elfhelm

Elfhelm is one of my favorite characters and his name wasn't taken. I go for "strong women" - ermm... I should say, my wife is a Xena-type, an Eowyn-type, etc. I've gone out with other types and they were boring (to me!) So that's why I like him and why I'm glad to carry his name. :D

Welcome to the Moot, Firalphien, make yourself at home, pull up a chair, sit by the fire and absorb all the LotR conversation, (and miscellaneous other convos) and help yourself to some Smarties if BoP will be so kind.

May I please have a Smartie BoP, because you're such a nice person. I like the yellow ones. (See above). I only want one... promise!

Oh, you can share some, fellow conspirator! Oh, and yes, there are some yellow ones left!

PS Hello new person! Not to make you worry or anything, but that barrowdowns site is seriously dodgy. It's names don't mean anything. Best to grab someone who knows elvish (quenya or sindarin), and get them to name you. Or go to this site: Sindarin Dictionary (http://www.jrrvf.com/~hisweloke/cgi-bin/sindarin.cgi?cognate=Elves&phon=) and look up a few attributes about yourself, and then coin them together, (of course asking someone if they are grammatically correct!) That's what I did with my elvish name, cos I know someone who is fluent in quenya.

Why afro-elf

Well usually game with characters who look like me.

I like elves. that's the basic reason.

in trying to create an elf in tolkien's world with out altering the world too much I decided to use the Avari. since they were the most varied

below is a discussion from another thread

http://entmoot.tolkientrail.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2201

the named ended up being Baranavair
which is sindarin for golden brown avari

wayfarer suggest rhogswasellon

which is brown curly haired elf but that's a mouth full and afro- in my moniker did not imply hair style

Well the movie name would be leslie fueregeron

xxx name

never had male pet I named myself.

but The first pet I recall being in the house was maurice

so i guess i would be french maurice feuregeron

ARRGHH !!!!!!!!! i hate the french :p
