Alright, be prepared this is a very stupid question LOL. Please do forgive me LOL. But what is the alphabet in the Hobbit's name? I mean ... I don't think I've ever seen it called anything except "runes" OR(and this is likely! LOL!) I've just overlooked something. This is what I'm talking about ...

Not like you guys don't know what I'm talking about ...

Thats a very good site btw!

without looking it up, i believe it's called the angerthas. there's an entire appendix on the writing and spelling of tolkien's languages in LOTR (App E).

welcome to the moot, fellow hobbit. i hope you find this board a useful resource for knowledge and humour.

The actual runes used in The Hobbit were Anglo-Saxon runes, a decision Tolkien later regretted. I don't know runes well enough to know if the runes used on the Web site you link to are from The Hobbit or from the appendix in The Lord of the Rings.

The appendix explains two separate styles of runes, which were originally devised by the Sindar of Beleriand (invented by Luthien's friend Daeron, in fact) and called "Cirth". "Angerthas" is part of a longer name, "Angerthas Moria", and denotes the second style explained in the appendix.

They're not Anglo Saxon Runes, the ones in the link. They look similar, but the values aren't the same.
