TOMNODDY!!!!! AH HA HA HA!!!
Seriously though . . . can anyone explain to me what Attercop and Tomnoddy actually mean ? Why is Attercop especially insulting to spiders? And why would "anyone" be insulted at being called Tomnoddy?

According to Douglas Anderson in The Annotated Hobbit:
"Attercop is from Middle English atter-cop(pe), itself from Old English at(t)or-coppa, 'spider' -- it means, literally, 'poison head'."
"The Oxford English Dictionary defines Tomnoddy as 'a foolish or stupid person'."

LOL, thanks, that's interesting information. A spider, insulted at being called a spider? How odd.

Oooh, I have a new insult for those ignorant jocks at my school who find it so fun to make fun of me for various reasons, or just be stupid and talk through class.
Shut up, you Tomnoddy!

I guess, that that "Attercop", is something alike with calling dragon "a worm". True, in one sence, but not too admirable.

I think I watched somewhere, either on Ripley's BION or on Discovery channel, that there was a real guy who was a jester/counselor once named Tom Fool who was pretty much like Grima and who plotted to take power.
Can anyone give any specifics on his story?

I once heard that 'Geek' was originally used as a word to describe someone who eats anything... Don't know how reliable that is, must go get my dictionary. Oh, my sister just agreed with me, I guess that's a sort of confirmation.
Good insults all! Must remember to use 'tomnoddy' sometime...;)

I once heard that snow is caused by a group of shady people who fly over the land in airplanes, dumping it from sacks out of the window.

Well...these spiders of Tolkien's aren't ordinary spiders, you see... ;)
My most favourite insult would have to be..."You're dumb", especially when you say it in a low, hoarse voice. I'm immune to most insults, since one of my school buddies calls me loser at least three times a day. :p

How unpleasant.
My own personal favorite names that I call people are:
Blockhead, bumphead, and bumpersticker. Occasionally, I get extra low and call people lump. Rather ridiculous, I'm sure, but it's better to be ridiculous then hurtful.

nimrod means great hunter i think or something like that.
Yes, Nimrod was a great hunter in the Bible, mentioned somewhere in the Old Testament. Don't know how it came to be an insult, though.
My dad would sometimes call me an 'ijit', puposefully distorting the word 'idiot' (but playfully, not to hurt my feelings). I always used to think that was hilarious for some reason, but I think I've grown out of it.

Nimrod has a bad reputation (according to legend he wasn't a good guy-he tossed abraham into a furnance for professing monotheism according to rabbinic legend)

Numpty is a new insult I've been using lately, probably because I've been chatting to so many Scots folk (I'm presuming it's a scottish insult, certainly not used in the NE much).

my favourite insult is "ga uw moeder pijpe, gijse godverdommese klootzak"
*untranslatable*
Didn`t the Orks used some funny terms to insult other Orks? Or what did Beorn said of Orks and Wargs again?
Or what did Gandalf said to insult the mouth of Sauron?
Sorry I can`t reply what they say again, but it`s been quite a while since I`ve readen LotR in English.
Edit: I heart what you last said mate! That`s not a very nice thing to say to someone eh! And a big insult to ones mum!
