ok i'm confused about sauron. Even though he put most of his power into the one ring he did not put all of it. SO why did it kill him? He and his army still seemed pretty powerful while the ring was in the hands of his enemies. And nothing says that they went into his fortress and killed him <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/ohwell.gif ALT=":\"> hmmm... also what happened to his spirit??? ne ideas?

When the Ring was destroyed, so much of his power was destroyed with it that he was unable to keep himself together. Litterally. He continued to exist, but as a shadow of malice unable to take form ever again. The amount of power that was gone not only caused his form's destruction, but also took out his tower(held together by the One Ring's power), dispersed the control of his armies and killed the Ringwraiths in midflight. But the dark essences of Sauron won't be gone until the Dagor Dagorath, when all Melkor and all his servants are destroyed forever and Arda is remade.

It says in Unfinished Tales (Part Four: Of the Istari) that he [Saruman] was

"cast down, and utterly humbled, and perished at last by the hand of an oppressed slave; and his spirit went whithersoever it was doomed to go, and to Middle-earth, whether naked or embodied, came never back."
