sorry for the slightly strange question, but i have a friend who is reading tolkien (in Hebrew) and she loves elvish. she's trying to translate as much as possible of the elvish in lotr and is doing quite well, i think! theres just one thing she hasn't managed to get, and that's what does Daro mean??? it doesn't appear in the silma or anywhere that she's managed to find. i promised to ask everyone here, but i doubt anyone will know :)
can anyone help?

It means to halt.
And here is where it was used:
"Daro!" it said in commanding tone, and Legolas dropped back to earth in surprise and fear. He shrank against the bole of the tree.

From The Languages of Tolkien's Middle-earth by R.S. Noel. Although I have been told that it is not the best source.....but it is all that I had.

The Etymologies in HoME V say much the same thing.

I have a Quenya/Sindarin/English list, Daro is Sindarin for 'Stop'.

i'd like to :) i'm trying to get hold of the HoME book which apparently has some elvish in it.. so far my library doesn't have it
Daro ~ is the imperative form (dar- "stop halt") to add just a bit :) Daro!

I thought "daro" meant "boo !!" :)
Legolas starts to climb the tree, and the other Elf says "BOO!!", startling Legolas.
