Curious as to what quotes from the book people liked.
My favorite is My signature
Smaug
12-27-2001, 02:04 AM
There's so many of them. :)
One I really liked was...You speak evil of that which is fair beyond the reach of your thought, and only little wit can excuse you.
Gildor

My favorite is also my signature...but there are many more. I'm sure I'll be back here as I stumble upon them.

Nice thread. :) :)
One of my very favourite quotes is this one from towards the end of RotK (from the chapter "Many Partings"):
"‘Well here we are, just the four of us that started out together,’ said Merry. ‘We have left all the rest behind, one after another. It seems almost like a dream that has slowly faded.’
‘Not to me,’ said Frodo. ‘To me it feels more like falling asleep again.’"
It always reminds me of the feeling I get after finishing the book - as though I'm "falling asleep again."
Some other favourites include:
"'What's that?' Cried Gandalf. He was relieved when Pippin confessed what he had done; but he was angry, and Pippin could see his eye glinting. 'Fool of a Took!' he growled. 'This is a serious journey, not a hobbit walking-party. throw yourself in next time, and then you will be no further nuisance. Now be quiet!"
Gandalf's "I liked white better."
"'A Balrog," muttered Gandalf.'Now I understand.' He faltered and leaned heavily on his staff. 'What an evil fortune! And I am already weary.'"
"Suddenly, caught by the level beams, Frodo saw the old king's head: it was lying rolled away by the roadside. 'Look, Sam!' he cried, startled into speech. 'Look! The King has got a crown again!'"
(Could anything be more moving?)
"'Sleep!' said Frodo and sighed, as if out of a desert he had seen a mirage of cool green. 'Yes, even here I could sleep.'"
"'...I am glad you are here with me. Here at the end of all things, Sam.'"
"'Well, I'm back,' he said."
And, last but not least:
"'...tonight you have come where it is death to come. The fish of the pool are dearly bought.'
Gollum dropped the fish from his hand. 'Don't want fish,' he said."

one of my most favorite quotes from the lotr is my signature. Also the many poems and songs. I don't no if this wood b allowed but one of my favorite quotes was from the hobbit. It was said by gandalf as u might guess.
"I AM GANDALF AND GANDALF MEANS ME!"
Whoever wrote this thread I want u to keep in mind next time u write a thread like this that the writing by mr. tolkien is so beautifully crafted into a story that most individual quotes do not stick out in ur mind.

I like that one too.
I also like "And he who breaks a thing to find out what it is has left the path of wisdom." (Gandalf to Saruman)
And this one with Gimli and Elrond:
"Faithless is he that says farewell when the road darkens."
" 'Maybe,' said Elrond, 'but let him not vow to walk in the dark, who has not seen the nightfall.' "
"Yet sworn word may strengthen quaking heart."
"Or break it."
It's been a while since I've read the books, and I'm reading them now, so I may find more quotes.

I really like this one:
"Out of the shadows the hobbits peeped, gazing back down the slope: little furtive figures that in the dim light looked like elf-children in the deeps of time peering out of the Wild Wood in wonder at their first Dawn." For some reason this totally transports me to Middle Earth.
Some other favorites of mine:
"There was a terrific splash and a shout of Whoa~ from Frodo. It appeared that a lot of Pippin's bath had imitated a fountain and leaped on high." (I love the bath song! Water Hot is a noble thing!)
"'No food, no rest, nothing for Smeagol,' said Gollum,'He's a sneak.'"
"'Frodo, Mr. Frodo!' he called. 'Don't leave me here alone! It's your Sam calling. Don't go where I can't follow! Wake up, Mr. Frodo! O wake up, Frodo, me dear, me dear. Wake up!'" Does anyone else cry at this part? I always do.
"'I am glad you are here with me. Here at the end of all things, Sam.'"
"And he sang to them, now in the Elven-tongue, now in the speech of the West, until their hearts, wounded with sweet words, overflowed, and their joy was like swords, and they passed in thought out to regions where pain and delight flow together and tears are the very wine of blessedness."

*snif* *sob* (wipes eyes with small white tissue) I just get so emotional reading all these quotes. Here are two of my favs:
They looked back. Dark yawned the archway of the Gates under the mountain-shadow. Faint and far beneath the earth rolled the slow drum-beats: doom. A thin black smoke trailed out. Nothing else was to be seen; the dale all around was empty. Doom. Grief at last wholly overcame them, and they wept long: some standing and silent, some cast upon the ground. Doom, doom. The drum-beats faded.
" "Well you've wasted a year, so why wait longer" "Wasted?" I says. "I wouldn't call it that". Still I see what she means."
Haven't read it in ages so I may come back with more

Do not meddle in the affairs of wizards, for they are subtle and quick to anger. -- Gildor, pg. 123, FOTR
Go not to the Elves for counsel, for they will say both no and yes. -- Frodo, same page as the last quote
and of course...
Well, I'm back.
I thought that last one when I came back from Winter Break two days ago...
Gildor
01-02-2002, 04:45 PM
From Gildor: "Advice is a dangerous gift, even from the wise to the wise, and all courses may run ill"
Also from Gildor: "Courage is found in unlikely places."
And a bit of comic relief from Aragorn that I am fond of:
"...you must send for the herb-master of this House. And he will tell you that he did not know that the herb you desire had any virtues, but that it is called westmansweed by the vulgar, and galenas by the noble, and other names in other tongues more learned, and after adding a few half-forgotten rhymes that he does not understand, he will regretfully inform you that there is none in the House, and he will leave you to reflect on the history of tongues."
Gildor
01-02-2002, 05:04 PM
Here's another favorite:
Gimli: "I thought Fangorn was dangerous."
"Dangerous!" cried Gandalf. "And so am I, very dangerous: more dangerous than anything you will ever meet, unless you are brought alive before the seat of the Dark Lord. And Aragorn is dangerous, and Legolas is dangerous. You are beset with dangers, Gimli son of Gloin; for you are dangerous yourself, in your own fashion."

the meaning of my past reply about tolkiens beautiful work is some ppl do not have a specific quote. If i really had the time(which i don't) for this thread i wood sit down and type the entire book, because that is wut i thought was a great quote. Wut shood not or atleast didnt for me happen is u remeber certain quotes u remember the beautiful story. Sure sum quotes stuck in ur mind but that is not the important thing is the story, b/c that is wut was great about the lotr

Everyone has a favorite portion of the book. Just because something is good doesnt mean that it's consistent in one's opinion of quality. If you do not have a favorite quote then you have the option not to post one, but some people like to.

Well, for me, my absolute favorite quote from the books is in my signature, the only direct quote from Sauron the Enemy [relayed by Pippin, however]...
I would have to disagree with Gollum that somehow no one quote "rings" out; however, unfortunately, I am not able to make out the rest of that posting, it being in some form of Orcish or something...
I was taken with many, many lines from the books, some of which have already been stated:
Gildor: "Do not meddle in the affairs of wizards, for they are subtle and quick to anger."
"Go not to the Elves for counsel, for they will say both no and yes."
'And he went on, and there was a yellow light, and fire within; and the evening meal was ready, and he was expected. And Rose drew him in, and set him in his chair, and put little Elanor on his lap. He drew a deep breath. "Well, I'm back," he said.'
Gandalf: "I liked white better."
Gandalf: "...Go in peace! I do not say: do not weep; for not all tears are evil."
Saruman: 'Saruman looked round him at their hostile faces and smiled. "Kill him!" he mocked. "Kill him, if you think there are enough of you, my brave hobbits!" he drew himself up and stared at them darkly with his black eyes. "But do not think that when I lost all my goods Ilost all my power! Whoever strikes me shall be accursed. And if my blood stains the shire, it will wither and never again be healed."
Saruman: "You don't care what a beggar lacks, do you? For you have all you want, food and fine clothes, and the best weed for your pipes. Oh yes, I know! I know where it comes from. You would not give a pipeful to a beggar, would you?"
And again: '"One thief deserves another," said saruman, and turned his back on Merry, and kicked Wormtongue, and went away towards the wood.
Good quotes you posted as well, fellow Entmooters!

"It was Sam's first view of battle of Men against Men, and he did not like it much. He was glad he could not see the dead face. He wondered what the man's name was and where he came from; and if he was really evil of heart, or what lies or threats had led him on the long march from his home; and if he would not really rather have stayed there in peace-"

Good one, Pailan. Kind of goes back to Tolkien's introduction to modern warfare in the meatgrinder of the Battle of the Somme in 1916. He lost every one of his classmates except one. Hideously tragic.

And just an aside again, gollum: We ARE discussing the works of an Oxford professor, not some street rap poet, and Tolkien himself would probably roll over in his grave were your post ever "channeled" to him on "the other side". ~Gandalf reading from the Book of Marzabul

How about this one?
Gandalf stirred, and looked up. "What have you to say that you did not say at our last meeting?" he asked. "Or, perhaps, you have things to unsay?"
Renille

There are so many! I'm limiting myself to three,as I feel lazy right now...
3. (To Frodo) "Just a plain hobbit you look," said Bilbo. "But there is more about you now than appears on the surface. Good luck to you!"
2."Mercy!" cried Gandalf. "If the giving of information is to be the cureof your inquisiveness, I shall spend all the rest of my days in answering you. What more do you want to know?" "The names of all the stars, and all the living things, and the whole history of Middle-earth and Over-heaven, and of the Sundering Seas," laughed Pippin. "Of course! What else?"
1.Then she let her hand fall, and the light faded, and suddenly she faded, and lo! she was shruken; a slender elf-woman clad in simple white, whose gentle voice was soft and sad. "I pass the test," she said. "I will diminish, and go into the west, and remain Galadriel."

Here' another one of my favorite quotes, this time from the stout and redoubtable Farmer Maggot:
"...You should never have gone mixing up yourself with Hobbiton folk, Mr. Frodo. Folk are queer up there." Sam stirred in his chair, and looked at the farmer with an unfriendly eye.
Ilove the character of Farmer Maggot, wish he had been in the film, and not just his scythe!

Not only...but also...another favorite quote, this time from Gandalf:
"...So Saruman will come to the last pinch of the vice [sic] that he has put his hand in. He has no captive to send. He has no stone to see with, and cannot answer the summons. Sauron will only believe that he is withholding the captive and refusing the stone. It will not help Saruman to tell the truth to the messenger. For Isengard may be ruined, yet he is still safe in Orthanc. So whether he will or no, he will appear a rebel. Yet he rejected us, so as to avoid that very thing! What he will do in such a plight, I cannot guess. He has power still, I think, while in Orthanc, to resist the Nine Riders. He may try to doi so. He may try to trap the Nazgul, or at least to slay the thing on which it now rides in the air...".

MY RESPONSE WHICH YOU CAN COMPREHEND: golim, i thnk u r dum an nvr red lord uf ring or iny othr buk an yur momi an dadi red it 2 u an u coodn unnerstan it so u cum 2 dis grup 2 thro stonz at peepl hoo cn ackchully thnk n spel.
MY RESPONSE WHICH IS FAR BEYOND YOUR COMPREHENSION: Gollum, I don't like flame fests, but this is too delicious for words. Do you actually think we would even remotely believe you even passed third grade English, much less earned a "doctorate"? As for your hideous "shorthand", I will reiterate: We ARE discussing the works of an Oxford professor, and for you to attempt to communicate on this subject using that stunted form of Swahili, or whatever it is, is tantamount to an absolute insult to the Master, this group and the literate individuals who make it wonderful.
As for your ignorance-laced, posturing post, let me say this to you: You have no comprehension of sentence structure, punctuation, syntax, word definitions, spelling, logic, how to use a keyboard, what a run-on sentence is, the difference between a word and a number, or how to string words together to make a translatable, complete idea.
NO person with a real doctorate in English would make grammatical howlers like "look up sum of the words in the dictionary that was said " or "Excuse me thinks as u put it..."
Also, since you are apparently writing your OWN dictionary [which I am supposed to "ead"] in this lower form of Orcish, mayhaps you could provide a definition for we more ignorant non-doctorates for the word "ladence".
If you can actually use the English language in its proper form, which I sincerely doubt, then maybe the logic behind the ideas which you espouse in the Entmoot will not be lost in the immediate waves of revulsion which are evoked by the reading of your posts. I know other Entmooters feel as kindly to your insultingly moronic "shorthand" as do I. Good day to you as well.
As for the thread, two more of my favorite quotes, which have even greater poignancy in response to gollum's posts:
"Don't waste your words on the fool, Sam!" said Frodo.
"You are dirty and insolent, Sandyman," said Merry. "And also very much out of your reckoning."

"'Mercy!' cried Gandalf. 'If the giving of information is to be the cure of your inquisitiveness, I shall spend the rest of my days in answering you. What more do you want to know?'
'The names of all the stars, and of all living things, and the whole history of Middle-earth and Over-heaven and of the Sundering Seas,' laughed Pippin. 'Of course! What less?'"
"It is not our part to master all the tides of the world, but to do what is in us for the succour of those years wherein we are set, uprooting the evil in the fields we know, so that those who live after may have clean earth to till. What weather they shall have is not ours to rule." --Gandalf
"Few can foresee whither their road will lead them, till they come to its end." --Legolas
"Faithless is he that says farewell when the road darkens." --Gimli
"Go not to the Elves for counsel, for they will say both no and yes." --Frodo Baggins

I like the sam/gollum 'sneaking' incident.
But my all time favorite from the LOTR has got to be.
'And he sang, now in the sweet elven tongue, now in th espeech of the west. Wounded with sweet words, they passed in thought to regions where joy and sorrow mingle together, and tears are the very wine of blessedness.'
That one is always touching.

No... I mean a package full of hamburger meat.
Take it, slice it up, remove the plastic and fry... and you have a good eight burgers.
A full pack of meat, a loaf of bread, a large onion, two tomatos, a couple dozen pickle slices, some lettuce, and some barbaue sauce...
that should be enough to tide me over until my next meal...

And I must take exception to the comment that chicken fajitas take a lot of time. [wink!] I can get those made pretty quick. Must be a difference in recipes... ;)
As for the "PhD in English" by "Gollum", I think that is as realistic a claim by that bozo as the real Gollum's claim to himself that he was the "rightful owner" of the One Ring! I cannot believe that he earned said PhD anywhere except maybe by correspondence school...and then, someone else filled in the little circles on the tests for him! In crayon!

How's this for a little spice, from Harvard Lampoon's "Bored of the Rings" [paraphrased]:
The orc captain towered over the two Boggies, an evil glint in his eye, fingering his blade: "So. Which one of you has it?"
"Him! Him!" shouted Moxie, indicating his hapless companion.
"That's him, I'd know him anywhere," shouted Pepsi, "Three-foot-four, one hundred two pounds, larceny, trespassing, trafficking with Elves, consorting with a known Ringbearer..."

Oh gosh there are so many .....
"Well, here at last, dear friends, on the shores of the Sea comes the end
of our fellowship in Middle-earth.
Go in peace!
I will not say: do not weep;for not all tears are an evil." - Gandalf
"I liked white better" - Gandalf
"I will take the Ring," he said, "though I do not know the way." - Frodo
"What are you going to do then?" asked Pippin', undaunted by the wizards's bristling brows. "Knock on the doors with your head, Pergrin Took!" said Gandalf. "But if that does not shatter them, and I'm allowed a little piece from foolish questions, I will seek for the opening words."
"Come, Mr. Frodo" he cried. "I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you as well as it. So up you get! Come on, Mr. Frodo dear! Sam will give you a ride. Just tell him wear to go and he'll go." - Sam
"The board is set and the pieces are moving" - Gandalf
"Faithless is he that says farewell when the road darkens." - Gimli
"I fancy, that even if we had entered in, we could have found few treasures in Orthanc more precious than the thing which Wormtongue threw down at us." A shrill shriek, suddenly cut off, came from a open window high above. "It seems Saruman thinks so too!"
I like pretty much anything Gandalf says the most out of all.

No, no, no, you don't understand at all! The daughters of the cows are of course directing their brothers (cow society being a matriarchy) to enslave you. Such an act could hardly be called a "battle", more of a general herding process actually, so the Most Mighty Daughters of the Ancient Cows lost in the Elder Days of the Burger Wars would never demean themselves by actually stooping to herding such hapless and misguided creatures as meat-eating men. They will merely keep you as slaves to tend their wide rolling fields of oats as far as the eye can see, AFTER the sons of cows herd you there. And Sauron will be right there with you! :D

Well there are so many quotes that I like. The whole end of Moria for example but here is my fav Bored of the Rings quote:
"Peoples of the West! The battle before the Black Gate of Sorhead will be few against many; but the few are of pure heart and the many of filthy. Nevertheless those of you who wish to cringe and run from the fight may do so to quicken our pace. Those who still ride with the king of Twodor will live forever in song and legend! The rest may go."

Okay, another hilarious, albeit, irreverent quote from "Bored of the Rings."
Background: In the town of Whee, at the inn "Goode Eats and Lodging", Frito Bugger and his companions are being menaced by all nine Nozdrul, disguised as waitresses, dressed in fake pig ears, pig snouts and tails, as they search him for the Ring. Stomper, the [Lone] Ranger, has just dived bravely under the table:
"Okay, chipmunk, give!" hissed the evil one, drawing his huge black mace. "I said-yeeeeeowtch!" cried the Nozdrul in pain, simultaneously letting go of Frito and jumping straight up in the air. From below the table rose a sharp, barbed blade. Stomper leaped up.
"Oh Dragonbreth! Gilthorpial!" he yodeled, waving his cleaver around like a madman. He lunged at the nearest wraith with his unwieldly sword. "Banzai!" he screamed. "No quarter asked or given! Dam* the torpedoes" Taking a vicious swipe, Stomper missed his mark by a good yard and tripped on his scabbard.
The nine stared at the writhing, foaming maniac with round, red eyes. The sight of Stomper filled them with awe. They stood speechless. Suddenly one of the stunned creatures began to titter, then chuckle. Another guffawed. Two more joined in, chortling loudly, and finally all nine were in the throes of hysterical, side-aching laughter. Stomper, puffing and enraged, stood up and tripped on his cape, spilling his silver bullets all over the floor. The whole dining room roared with unbelieving hilarity. Two Nozdrul collapsed to the ground, helplessly giggling. Others staggered about, great red tears rolling down their scaly cheeks, gasping for air and incapable of holding their maces. Haw haw haw! Stomper got to his feet, his face beet-red with anger. He lifted his sword, and the blade fell off the handle. Haw haw haw haw haw! the Nozdrul rolled and writhed on the ground, clutching their ribs. Stomper replaced the blade, took a mighty wind-up, and firly embedded the point in the cement pig. HAW HAW HAW HAW HAW HAW HAW HAW HAW HAW HAW HAW HAW....
At this point, seeing that no one was paying any attention to him, Frito picked up one of the heavy, discarded maces and calmly proceeded to beat some heads in. Moxie, Spam, and Pepsi followed his example and went among the gibbering wraiths administering random kicks to groins and breadbaskets..."
Oh come on, you GOTTA admit this is funnier than heck! You have to read this one if you haven't already, O Tolkien Fans...

How about this, from The Fellowship of the Rings, Book I, Chapter 2 (The Shadow of the Past):
_____
"Queer things you do hear these days, to be sure," said Sam.
"Ah," said Ted, "you do, if you listen. But I can hear fireside-tales and children's stories at home, if I want to."
"No doubt you can," retorted Sam, "and I daresay there's more truth in some of them than you reckon. Who invented the stories anyway? Take dragons now."

another quote that had me in stiches form Board of the Rings:
The scene: Dildos birthday party
"I have lived in Boggietown, as you all know, for most of my life, and I have developed opinions of you all, and before I leave you all for the last time, I want to let you all know what you all mean to me." The croud yelled approval, thinking it was now time for Dildo to distribute the expected gifts among them. But what followed suprised even Frito, who looked at his uncle with shocked admiration. He had dropped his pants.
Hillarious!

Here's my choice, from "THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING," book two, chapter 6-"LOTHLÓRIEN."
At the hill's foot Frodo found Aragorn, standing still and silent as a tree; but in his hand was a small golden bloom of elanor, and a light was in his eyes. He was wrapped in some fair memory: and as Frodo looked at him he knew that he beheld things as they once had been in this same place. For the grim years were removed from the face of Aragorn, and he seemed clothed in white, a young lord tall and fair; and he spoke words in the Elvish tongue to one whom Frodo could not see. 'Arwen vanimelda, namarië!' he said, and then he drew a breath, and returning out of his thought he looked at Frodo and smiled.
'Here is the heart of Elvendom on earth,' he said, 'and here my heart dwells ever, unless there be a light beyond the dark roads that we still must tread, you and I. Come with me!" And taking Frodo's hand in his, he left the hill of Cerin Amroth and came there never again as a living man.

ok so this isn't technically a quote, but i love this sentence:
The naked waste, as far as the eye could pierce, even to the distant menace of the mountains, was dappled with the fitful moonlight.
i guess that's the good thing about being a slow reader (and trust me, the benefits are few!) - i find that i pick up on some of tolkien's more "floral" sentences :)
and also this is one of my favourite speeches from the books:
'For myself,' said Faramir, 'I would see the White Tree in flower again courts of the kings, and the Silver Crown return, and Minas Tirith in peace: Minas Anor again as of old, full of light, high and fair, beautiful as a queen among other queens: not a mistress of many slaves, nay, not even a kind mistress of willing slaves. War must be, while we defend our lives against a destroyer who would devour all; but I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend: the city of the Men of Númenor; and I would have her loved for her memory, her ancientry, her beauty, and her present wisdom. Not feared, save as men may fear the dignity of a man, old and wise." :) :) :)

"Yes, good! Especially the 'heigh-ho' part'" added Pepsi.
"And what do you be callin' that?" asked Spam, who knew few songs.

Another irreverent quote from that hilarious parody, "Bored of the Rings":
"...But the craft Riders were not long deceived by Frito's ruse. They spurred their drooling swine to the bridge, intent on recapturing the boggie and his precious Ring. But, as Frito saw with surprise, the Black Nine were halted at the foot of the crossing by a figure robed in shining raiment.
"Toll, please," commanded the figure of the startled Riders. the pursuers were again dumfounded when they were directed to a hatily lettered sign tacked to a support:
Elfboro Municipal Toll Bridge
Single Wayfarers..................1 farthing
Double-Axled Haywains........2 farthings
Black Riders..........................45 gold pieces
"Let us cross!" snapped an angry Nozdrul.
"Certainly," replied the attendant pleasantly. "Now let's see. there's one, two ... ah, nine of you at forty-five apiece, that makes .... uuuuuhh, four hundred and five beans, exactly, please. In cash."
Hurriedly, the Nozdrul searched their saddlebags as their leader cursed angrily and shook his slugger with frustration.
"Listen," he stormed, "what kind of dough do you think we make, anyhow? Ain't there some sorta discount for civil servants?"
"I'm sorry-----" smiled the attendant.
"How 'bout a Wayfarer's Letter of Credit? They're as good as bullion anywhere."
"Sorry, this is a bridge, not a countinghouse," replied the figure impassively.
"My personal check? It's backed up by the treasure rooms of Fordor..."

I wonder if Professor T even named the Southern Cross, since he referred to the south as a place where "the stars are strange." NOT the people, just the stars. :D
You could very well be correct about the other constellations being real. The only other one I recall off-hand that the author mentioned was the sickle. (Sorry about the lousy sentence construction). Stars DO change relative position, but very slowly, even more slowly than ents age or hobbits get up from the table.

Yes, that's why I picked it. I particularly love that scene where Frodo, Pippin and Sam meet Gildor (it brings our the hobbits' charaters so well) and Frodo watches Mevelvagor rise over the horizon.
My favorite quote from that scene:
"Well, sir, if I could grow apples like that, I would call myself a gardener. But it was the singing that went to my heart, if you know what I mean."
And later in Crickhollow:
"I don't deny it," said Frodo, looking at Sam who was now grinning. "I don't deny it, but I'll never believe you are sleeping again, wheter you snore or not. I shall kick you hard to make sure."

You're 100% right, Menelvagor. Little scenes like reveal an awful lot about the "fantasy" side of Middle Earth, and also elevate Samwise (in particular) from bumpkin status to someone who is a bit mystical himself. The inclusion of Orion and the Big Dipper/Sickle really struck a chord in my own heart, having been fascinated by astronomy since I was a kid. It enabled me to make some kind of emotional connection to the inhabitants of Middle Earth in a tangible way.

I'd be VERY surprised at the autographed copy thing were true, bropous. Funny concept, tho, along with the ale and darts down at the local. Can you hear him say, "Barkeep, would you be so kind as to set up a round of Watney's for my American friends here?"
From what I've read of him so far, he doesn't seem to have been a real cut-up. But maybe he and C. S. Lewis were really two wild and crazy guys who managed to hide that fact. :)

OK, now, Ragamuffin, you just gave me an image that completely warped my brain:
J.R.R. and C.S., wearing awful checkered pants and '70s shirts, swaggering around post-war Oxford á l* Steve Martin and Dan Aykroyd's Czech Brothers on Saturday Night Live.
J.R.R.:   "Hello, sexy British foxes!"
C.S.:     "Are you not attracted to our gorgeous male physiques?"
J.R.R.:   "After all…"
C.S.:     "… we are …"
(Together): "…two wild and crazy dons!!!"
Yikes!  I know I'm going to get roasted for blasphemy on this one… :) :) :)  Please be gentle!  It's all in fun!  No disrespect meant!

Well, now, JRR and CSL were known to toss back a few at the pub, and apparently their discussions drew a bit of interest at times from other "punters". JRR loved his beer, and complained about his beer barrel at home being empty, as well as the shortage of beer overall in wartime Britain, in his Letters. He also appears to have sat for a game or two of "football" in his day.

Well, what to say to that? Narratively convienent sword? Merry carried that all the way from the barrow downs and if they hadn't been infested with wights he would not have had that particular blade. So what I am saying here is that the Witch King of Angmar had sown the seeds of his own destruction in the third age (1974 or there about) by destroying the North Kingdom. The barrow wights were his doing and the events which followed leading to his "bad knee" were set in motion nearly 1045 years before. Perhaps predestined would be closer to the mark.;)

Greatest quote? Mmm, there's so many! Probably:
"Well, I'm back"
cos it's a really great ending. But also I like:
"The white page can be over-written, the white cloth can be dyed, the white light can be broken!"
"In which case it is no longer white, and one who breaks a thing to see what it is made of has left the path of wisdom."
Ok, that's 2 quotes really, but it's such a true dialogue!

I love the high-sounding triumph in this part. It lifts my spirit and gives me hope for our own age.
Here is Aragorn, son of Arathorn, chieftain of the Dunedain of Arnor, Captain of the Hosts of the West, Bearer of the Star of the North, wielder of the Sword Reforged, victorious in battle,
whose hands bring healing, the Elfstone, Elessar of the line of Valandil, Isildur's son, Elendil's son of Numenor. Shall he be king and enter into the City and dwell there?
And all the hosts and all the people cried "yea" with one voice.
And later...
But when Aragorn arose all that beheld him gazed in silence, for it seemed to them that he was revealed to them now, for the first time. Tall as the sea-kings of old, he stood above all that were near; ancient of days he seemed and yet in the flower of manhood; and wisdom sat upon his brow, and strength and healing were in his hands, and a light was about him. And then Faramir cried:
"Behold the King!"

None but too many spring to mind... here are some just off the top of my head..
Frodo raised his eyes with difficulty to the dark slopes of Mount Doom towering above him, and then pitifully he began to crawl forward on his hands.
Sam looked at him and wept in his heart, but no tears came to his dry and stinging eyes."I said I'd carry him, if it broke my back," he muttered,"and I will!!"
"Come Mr. Frodo" he cried. "I can't carry It for you, but I can carry you and It as well. So up you get! Come on, Mr. Frodo dear! Sam will give you a ride. Just tell him where to go, and he'll go!!"
*sniff...*
Frodo: I tried to save the Shire, and it has been saved, but not for me. It must often be so, Sam, when things are in danger: someone has to give them up, lose them, so that others may keep them... how true....

A good deep one
" 'And that will lie in the dust and rot to spring up again in times and places unlooked-for. The deeds of Men wiill oulast us gimli. And yet come to naught in the end but might-have-beens, I guess,' said the dwarf. 'To that the Elves know not the answer."

Humorous:
"Your talk of sniffing riders with invisible noses has unsettled me." --Pippin Took
"Yes, they are Elves, and they say that you breathe so loud that they could shoot you in the dark." --Legolas
"Well, I wish Frodo would 'screw himself up' and come back, and let us get it over." --Pippin Took
"Since Gandalf's head is now sacred, let us find one that is right to cleave!" --Gimli
" 'Mercy!' cried Gandalf.
'Of course! What less?' "
Serious:
"There is more in you of good than you know, child of the kindly West. Some courage and some wisdom, blended in measure. If more of us valued food and good cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world." --Thorin
"None may live now as they have lived, and few shall keep what they call their own." --Aragorn
"But there, my friends, songs like trees bear fruit only in their own time and their own way: and sometimes they are withered untimely." --Treebeard
"Far let us ride now together, and part not in this world again!" --Gandalf

so many quotes i can`t choose 1. here r some of my favs:
Frodo: He deserves death!
Gandalf: Deserves it? i daresay he does. Many that live deserve death and some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends.
Bilbo: I don`t know half as of you half as well as I should like; and i like less than half of you half as well as you deserve!
Frodo: I wish it neeed not have happened in my time.
Gandalf:So do i. And so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.
and last but not least...
"So that was the King of Rohan" said Pippin in an undertone."A fine old fellow.Very polite"- i cracked up at that 1!

Just three -
At the end of the party -
"Gardeners came by arangement and removed in wheelbarrows those that had inadvertently remained behind."
When the presents are handed out after the party -
"For Lobelia Sackville-Baggins, as a present on a case of silver spoons. Bilbo believed that she had aquired a good many of his spoons, while he was away on his former journey. Lobelia knew that quite well. When she arrived later in the day, she took the point at once, but she also took the spoons."
After the balad of Gil-galad -
"The others turned in amazement, for the voice was Sams.
"Don't stop," said Merry.
"Thats all I know," stammered Sam blushing.

From Faramir, certainly an admirable man.
I like "I would not snare even an orc, with a falsehood" and "Tidings of Death have many wings."
"I sat at night by the waters of Anduin, in the grey dark under the young, pale moon, watching the ever-moving stream; and the sad reeds were rustling."
"Boromir! I cried. Where is thy horn? Whither goest thou? O Boromir! But he was gone."
"I am wise enough to know there are some perils from which a man must flee."
And I love this little exchange of gallantries:
Sam: "Good night, Captain, my lord. You took the chance, sir."
Faramir: "Did I so?"
Sam: "Yes sir, and showed your quality, the very highest."
Faramir: (smiling) "A pert servant, Master Samwise, but nay: the praise of the praiseworthy is above all rewards. Yet there was naught in this to praise. I had no lure or desire to do other than I have done."
Sam: "Ah well, sir, you said my master had an elvish air; and that was good and true. But I can say this: you have an air too, sir, that reminds me of, of--well, Gandalf, of wizards."
Faramir: Maybe, Maybe you discern from far away the air of Numenor. Good night!"

This isn't from the book (I have only read the book 6 times and i can't remember the quotes from it) it is from the film. It is my favourite because it is funny. It may be incorrect so sorry if it is but here goes;
“Frodo? Merry! It’s Frodo Baggins” - Pippin
“Hello Frodo” - Merry
“Get off ‘im. You’ve been into Farmer Maggots crop!” - Sam
“Oi! Get out of my field” - Farmer Maggot
“I don’t know why he’s so upset…It’s only a few carrots” - Merry
“And cabbages… and those three sacks of potatoes we lifted last week… and the mushrooms the week before that” - Pippin
“My point Pippin that he is clearly over reacting” – Merry

"All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us." -Gandalf (again :))

One of my favourites is my sig. I think it means so much in these times.
I also like:
'Let it be a light to you in dark places, a place where all other lights, go out' - Galadriel. I think of the Lord of the Rings when I'm sad, bored or angry coz it calms me down and cheers me up.
'I only know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than hald of you half as well as you deserve' - Bilbo. This made me LMAO, it's so like Bilbo!
'It is said, "Do not meddle in the affairs of wizards, for they are subtle and quick to anger"' - Gildor. 'It is also said, "Go not to the Elves for counsel, for they will say both yes and no'" - Frodo. I just like this one, it's ... well, I dunno, I just like it.
'I liked white better' - Gandalf the White. I feel it's one of the few parts that show Gandalf has a bit of an attitude.
'I would have followed you to the end' - Aragorn. 'I know' - Frodo. From the movie, but that doesn't matter. THIS is the kind of reason I like Aragorn!
'I feel that this task has been appointed for you, and if you do not find a way, no-one will' - Elrond. This is a part that really shows you how serious The One Ring situation is.
'In a hole in the ground there lived a Hobbit' - The Hobbit. Does this count? I really like this one, it grabs you and makes you think, whats a Hobbit? Why a hole? It's gr8.
'Well, I'm back' - Sam. Kind of ... final, isn't it? ;)
There are more, but I can't remember them off the top of my head and I don't wanna get them wrong!

I've got more!
'"Don't you leave him" they said to me. "Leave him!" I said. "I never mean to. I am going with him if he climbs to the Moon, and if any of those Black Riders try to stop him, they'll have Sam Gamgee to reckon with," I said' - Sam. This shows that Sam means to go with Frodo right to the end, it's beautiful.
'You cannot pass! I am a Servant of the Secret Fire, weilder of the Flame of Anor. You cannot pass! The dark fire will not avail you, flame of Udun. Go back to the Shadow! You cannot pass!' - Merry Brandybuck :D . This really shows how powerful Gandalf the Grey was. This makes what happens next more of a shock :( :( :( .
'No indeed! You at least shall go with him. It is hardly possible to separate you from him, even we he is summoned to a secret council and you are not!'
- Elrond. This bit was funnier in the film coz Merry and Pippin were hiding as well and the look on Elrond's face when it started raining Hobbits was hilarious!
:D Ooooooh! Sudden though - Some Mooters here could make a band, it's first hit would be, 'It's Raining Hobbits' (take on 'It's Raining Men' but, of course, you already knew that ;) )

"Lost, lost! We're lost. And when precious goes we'll die, yes, die into the dust...Dusst!" (with whatever is missing in between there...) i have this pathetic image of smeagol/gollum in the dust, wimpering.
"Thw whole thing is quite hopeless, so it's no good worrying about tomorrow. It probably won't come" -Frodo. How hopeless can you get? i want to cry every time.
"Go now, and die in what way seems best to you. And with whom you will, even that fool whose folly brought you to this death." -denethor. don't know why i like that. i dont like it so much, it's just, well there it is. its so absurd and tragic.
wow they have been pretty depressing so far...ok here's one.
the beginnning of this might not be exact-
frodo-"I don't want a string of questions while i am eating. i want to think."

deep roots are not reached by the frost.
from ashes a fire shall be woken,
a light from the shadows shall spring,
renewed shall be blade that was broken,
the crownless again shall be king!
and
"Begone, foul dwimmerlaik, lord of carrion! leave the dead in peace!" a cold voice answered: " Come not between the nazgul and his prey! Or he will not slay thee in thy turn. he will bear thee away to the houses of lamentation, beyond all darkness, Where thy flesh shall be devoured , and thy shrivelled mind be left naked to the lidless eye." A sword rang as it was drawn."do what you will; but I will hinder it if I may." "Hinder me? Thou fool. No living man may hinder me!" Then Merry heard of all sounds in the hour the strangest. It seemed that Dernhelm laughed, and the clear voice was like the ring of steel. "But no living man am I! You look upon a woman. Eowyn I am, Eomund's daughter. You stand between me and my lord and kin. Begone, if you be not deathless! For living or dark undead, I will smite you, if you touch him"
