If anyone checks out Slate's "Book Club" section (http://slate.msn.com/?id=2059557&entry=2059589) soon (as of 1:00am EST, 12/13/2001), they're discussing The Lord of the Rings.
Be warned: Tuesday's article takes some gentle shots at Tolkien's writing style. And, as usual on Slate's message boards, plenty of boors show off their pseudo-intellects by taking deliberately contrarian views … i.e., there are Tolkien detractors among the many fans.
Despite the mixed bag of taste, fandom, and relevance, though, I thought I'd post the link for anyone who's interested in reading the "outside world's" take on LotR.
