View Full Version : Who is your favorite hobbit?

Mine's Frodo, but Bilbo is at a close second.

Banazir32

Mine is also Frodo, and after that- Merry.

Save the best for last... and that is what Tolkien did. (when it came to the ringbearers)
Long live Master Samwise!!!!!

Bilbo talked with a dragon (quite impressive), but he knew he was invisable. In that same converstation he inraged Smaug to destroy an entire village. This he did that when he named himself "Barrel Rider"

Frodo screamed at a "Black Rider" and accepted a most frightful quest (although he did not fully know what he was getting into). He also was bold enough to continue the journey, cross the Anduin and go into Mordor alone. All this is quite impresive and worthly of praise.....

however....

Frodo would not have lasted with out Sam. He saved Frodo from the Orcs. and they mistaked the little Hobbit gardener as and elven warrior. He was willing to finish the quest alone and (and he really did know the full danger) Of course what really put Sam over the top is he did something that only few*** could even possibly do. He beat Shelob ... a child of Ungoliant.

Sam .. no contest (:

***- of the people who lived in the third age in middle earth these could beat Shelob - Mithrandir, Sauron
--- and if they were lucky - Aragorn, Glorfindel, ---- (and maybe tom bombadil)

Prince Faramir

Are surely my favourite Hobbits but i like this quote Elsilar where did u come by it?

"- of the people who lived in the third age in middle earth these could beat Shelob - Mithrandir, Sauron
--- and if they were lucky - Aragorn, Glorfindel, ---- (and maybe tom bombadil)"

but surely the other ring bearers could, elrond galadriel...

how also did ungoliant die? me not got around to the silmarillion yet [or how to spell it :P]

Idril Celebrindal
05-11-2001, 03:33 PM
Surely Merry... closely followed by pippin. The guys are so much tougher/more useful than anyone expects, and great fun along with it...

Elsilar
05-11-2001, 04:56 PM
Prince Faramir - there were not any quotes around what i wrote i was just speculating who could beat Shelob. -- Silamrilion said that Ungoliant devoured herself (there is more that could be said..... but not here @ this topic strand (or forum) - i guess its only fair)

Idril-Merry and Pippin are cool. Samwise also rocks, but Frodo is da hobbit.

I like Fredegar Bolger.

easterlinge
05-14-2001, 08:44 AM
Fredegar Bolger? He didn't seem to do much.

I like the way Lobelia Sackville-Baggins stuck up to Saruman's ruffians with an umbrella.

And who could forget Nob and Bob?

Mace McClain
05-14-2001, 07:18 PM
Fregegar? Never heard of him. Where is he from?

Banazir32
05-14-2001, 09:27 PM
Fredegar Bolger (also called "Fatty") was one of Frodo's friends in the Shire. The one who stayed behind when the four hobbits went into the Old Forest.

Inoldonil
05-15-2001, 11:26 PM
He did more than that! But it is his character I like, I don't pick favorites based on accomplishments.

As for accomplishments, however, there is much to say.

He was involved in the conspiracy against Frodo, with Sam, Pippin and Merry. His job was to stay behind at Crickhollow and deal with curious persons to make sure his secret was kept, and to pretend to be Frodo, he was to wear his clothes to help in the part. Also he was the bonus that a message would be left behind for Gandalf.

In the event Gandalf did not wait for news ('or I would have been comforted'), but Fredegar did other things. Thinking that Frodo Baggins was at Crickhollow the Nazgul raided the house, but Fredegar fled out the backway before they got to him. He ran miles as fast as he could to the nearest settlement, but all he could say for some time was 'I haven't got it!'. Eventually they gathered there were invaders in Buckland - from the Old Forest they thought, and they blew the Horn of Buckland and drove the Ringwraiths out. When Lotho and Saruman were controlling the Shire he led a band of rebels against them in the Bockenbores, but was captured. Frodo and company met him coming out of the Lockholes, he was not quite Fatty anymore.

He was a very typical Hobbit.

He lived in Budgeford in Bridgefields, and my guinea-pig holds the honour of his name, I'll have you know.

Banazir32
05-16-2001, 08:21 PM
Sorry, Inoldonil. When I said that Fredegar stayed behind, I definitely didn't mean that was the only thing he did, or that it was a bad thing. He sure had many accomplishments, and I understand why you like his character. I meant no offense. :)

I found Pippen to be the most comical out of the all the hobbits and I admire such traits in such a very small being in a age so dark and unsure i found him to be a real breath of fresh air. liek when he threaten to wrestle Bergil and stand him on his head

Smeagol! Yesssss my precioussss!

Okay, if you're talking modern, non-corrupted hobbits, Sam's my favorite

And Merry and Pippin are great, too.

Samwise of the shire
05-21-2001, 08:39 PM
(well Hobbit would be more correct)I mean he's got something that is so cool that I cant understand it,I mean under the simple brown face lies a courage, loalty and a goodness that is'nt there when you firstmeet him but you kinda know it is,also he has got some type of fire(telling a wizard "there aint no eaves at Bag end and thats a fact"takes guts I mean he could've been fried -or worse turned into a toad-and throwing an apple at a full grown man who had the reputation of being nasty took an apple and a bold personality),next would be Pippin.Ta Da,funny and when he out thinks Grishnak well that was unexpected I mean during the whole trip he was either throwing something down a well or arguing with a wizard or something like that but then boom he suprises you with "He wants the Ring".It's pretty cool.
Sam da man(or Hobbit)

Well my favorite hobbit would have to be Pippin. There's just something about stabing a nazgul that makes a hobbit seem 6 feet tall.

Mace McClain
06-13-2001, 12:49 AM
Pippin is awesome.

bilbo, he started it all with finding the ring, even if it was luck he did what no1 else had been able to do for so long.

Inoldonil

'he was meant to find the Ring ... and not by its maker.'

ladyisme
06-19-2001, 07:35 PM
But Bilbo also gave the ring up of his own free will, something nobody eles had ever done before or after. Howerver my favorite hobbit is still Pipin, it takes a lot of nerve to bug a short tempered wizard non stop through a whole war.

"The road goes ever on and on down from the door where it began."

Idril Celebrindal
06-20-2001, 07:52 PM
um... I don't think that as intentional... but still. I love that line when they're outside Moria, trying to get in...
"What are you going to do then?" asked Pippin, undaunted by the wizard's bristling brows.
"Knock on the doors with your head, Peregrin Took," said Gandalf, "But if that does not shatter them, and I am allowed a little peace from foolish questions, I will seek for the opening words."

ladyisme
07-18-2001, 12:49 AM
Yes, that is part of what I'm talking about but Pippin (and Merry also but not quite as much) also hounded Gandalf for information despite all threats.

"The road goes ever on and on down from the door were it began."

Elenna
07-18-2001, 10:53 PM
Pippin, I am thinking it was who took the Palantiri and looked into it. That took.....er...um.....guts!

All Hobbits considered, my favorite would have to be, Sam. I just love the guy. He saved Frodo's but over and over again in Mordor, but he even saved Frodo's hide before thay ever left the shire. Rallying behind Frodo's back, getting a plan together to keep him from goin off alone. Seems to me that Sam deserves as much credit as Frodo, even if he wasn't a full time ring bearer.

Elenna ~ Lady of the Stars

Inoldonil
07-19-2001, 12:53 AM
I can't agree about Pippin. Guts? He didn't have any idea about the danger, he was obsessed, he had to look into it. In doing so he probably saved Gandalf and hence so much more, but I doubt there were any guts involved. If he had known the danger, looking into it could have been a few different things, guts perhaps, but if not still because he was drawn towards it, then surely stupidity would play a large role? Stupidity, or pride, or both. Well, he was foolish any way you look at it ... but not brave, I think.

The act of using the Palantir was still very important, as I said, Gandalf looking into it would have been alot worse.

Elenna
07-19-2001, 01:15 AM
Yeah, your right. Sorry, my silly mistake, or rather Pippin's silly mistake. :) Definetly not guts, but he did save dear old Gandalf alot of trouble.

I love SAM!!! He's so cool! His devotion to Frodo is a lesson to us all. He's also a great cook.:D Let's go Sam! And one last thing, anyone who thinks or says Sam was gay is an idiot and a punk.

As u might guess, my favourite is Pippin. He has a cool sense of humour.

Anyone who insults Sam will answer to me!!!:)
He was very brave, he never gave up, he wasn't at all corrupted by the Ring, and he was funny.

(I was sure that it was Merry who stabbed the Nazgul. Pippin killed a troll at the gates of Mordor)

That's harder than it looks to type)

Sam is cool too but not as intelligent as Frodo, who knew what he was getting into. We're supposed to love Sam and admire Frodo but Frodo Lives! There would have been no quest without Frodo. We would all be speaking Morgul (Mordish?) without Frodo.
Pippin and Merry too. They would not want us comparing them, anyway.

I love Sam!
He is so loyal, cute and straight forward. I love the way he talks to people and how he always tries to protect Frodo.

I like the Hobbits more than any other characters/race/whatever because they are easy to read, uncomplicated and without all the difficulties of an elven or any other race's life.
The hobbit parts are my favourite, but Sam always has been my favourite character, right from the beginning.

I took the personality test and got Sam! It was really srange because my brother (Jimbo here on entmoot) cheated to try and get Legolas and he got Bilbo, and i didn't cheat and got Sam first try!

Frodo Rules!!!!!!

It could just be me and my strange liking for whoever everything happend to, but I absolutely LOVE Frodo! However, Sam is a very close second. He's just so loyal and protective of Frodo, and he proves time and time again that he would do anything for him......*siggghhhhh......*

Merry and Pip are cool too. In a book like that, you need some comic relief in there. Not like that's ALL their good for or anything.Beating up trolls and Ring-wraiths takesalot of guts! :D

i think pippin is pretty much my favourite because he is just so cool. he is funny and he is clever sometimes (like getting away from the orcs) and he reminds me of myself. i didn't like him so much in the third book though when he got all gondor-soldier-ish. but i still liked him. and i like merry a lot and sam too. (you can't not like sam i mean come on) and frodo totally rocks. i loved him at the end when he was like a pacifist and told sauraman to go away. perhaps that had something to do with gollum. i'm sure. well anyway and bilbo rocks my world. all the hobbits are the best. they are the coolest race ever. sorry that was long. oh oh any i can't help but like gollum or at least feel bad for him. it wasn't his fault really. only i think this is supposed to be favourite hobbit...no wait he started out semi-hobbit so there. oh sorry rambling on again.

I'd have to say Sam because it was really cool how he smacked Bill Ferny in the nose with that apple, but Merry and Pippin are a close second...and then the's Smeagol, after all with out him the quest would have failed.

It was a pretty funny thing for Lobelia to stand up to Sharkley's(a.k.a Sauruman's) men with and umbrella.

Frodo's just a little stuck up. He made Sam cry in ROTK! I wanted to punch him.

All of the hobbits have great personalities and are well built characters. Even Deagol who doesn't really do much exept get the ring from the bottom of the Great river.

Pippin is most obviously the best but I think Bilbo is great too so he's second. Sam the Stout-hearted has to tie with Bilbo because he's very brave and loyal and he places other hobbits/elves/dwarves/men etc.'s needs before his own and doesn't think highly of himself and always tries hard. Frodo greatly resembles Bilbo so he's next. Don't get me wrong I think all hobbits are great but last on my line of favourites are Merry (who is a favourite because of his simalarities with Pippin and Sam), Rosie Cotton, Farmer cotton, Fatty Bulger and Farmer Maggot.

Frodo is crap in my opinion. He doesnt deserve Sting.
My favourite hobbit is bilbo baggings.
(or if its of frodo, sam, merry and pippin then i'd say sam. Sam is brave but i do wonder some times about him)

I always thought that sometimes it is cool to be evil. U know? How about U?

Pimpernel

yesh we likes to be evil, but not in this thread when we is talking about our spooocial little hobbitses...
OUR hobbit ish Pippin, and he ish for absolutely no one else! And, in spite of my name on entmoot being Pimpernel, my REAL name ish Diamond Took (look in the appendices to LotR, i AM Pippin's wife and our son ish Faramir, b/c he ish cool too, but not a hobbit and am i rambling?)
anyway, i read some people a few pages back saying that my little hobbit isn't brave! what do you think you were getting into? i forgive you, whoever you were, filthy orcses!
i will proceed to prove my point: Pippin is brave! he left the shire (this is in the books mind you) not knowing at all where he was headed, because he cared about his friend/cousin Frodo. so he goes through many adventures. now how many of you could do half of the things he did? really? not in spoocial fantasy, could you and would you really do those things that he did? now, if you were to compare pippin to peoples like aragorn etc., then of course pippin comes nowhere near, but really and truly, every single person, hobbit, orc, ent, elf, nazgul, etc. in the books is brave in their own spoocial way. now, you will say that you cant compare a book hobbit to a hobbit like urself or myself, so compare him to the normal hobbits in the Shire that never had any adventures or did anything unexpected.
Pippin is brave and he IS MINE!!!!! and theres nuttin any of you can do about it!!
sry that was so long and sorta rambling, but i couldnt believe that anybody could say that Pippin is not brave!

I wasn't really saying any nasty stuff about sam. Sam is a good character in the book and i liked what he did to shelob. Quiet a brave hobbit but he was a bit too close to frodo thats all (cared a bit too much)

I love sam because he is so kind and helpful and never seems to be in a bad mood.
And Merry because I think he is funny and bright.

I would definitely say that Bilbo is my favorite hobbit if you mean all of tolkiens works, but just dealing with LOTR i like sam for amny of the reasons already listed, and because he wouldn't leave his master, no matter how scared he was to go where he was going.

Merry is my favorite hobbit, he has so much common sense and he´s smart and insightful. I can relate to him so well in the certain parts of the book that I suppose that´s why I like him so much. :)

I assume you mean favorite of the four in the fellowship. Sam. Come on he attacks Aragorn with his fists and calls him longshanks.
But other than him, Farmer Maggot.

(If this was the movies section I would have said that random hobbit in the very beginning who smiles at Gandalf's fireworks and then gets scolded by his wife.)

Of the fellowship I don't really Frodo or Sam best because they are more important characters and I can't really relate with that so out of Merry and Pippin I like Pippin better because I think he's the funnier one. On the other hand I think I can relate with Frodo better as far as personalities go.

Pippin is the best hobbit. I liked how he was innocent in the book and curious about things. By the end he was more wise about the world he lived in.

In the movie he just sucked though.

Pippin is excellent in the book, but in the movie he, well, does suck. But Sam is the best hobbit. He has always been my favourite character, even years ago when I first read the books and weren't as obsessed as I am now.

I don't mean to be a stickler about this, I just want to gently remind everyone that it is unnecessary and actually undesirable that you mention whether or not you liked or disliked the character how he was portrayed in the movies, since this is the books forum. It is assumed that when you discuss the characters here, you are referring to the books only. There are threads in the movies forum to discuss the characters in the movies. Thank you.:)

I liked Samwise. He is by far the best Hobbit! I used to like Frodo..but Samwise is best! I loved his loyalty and courage, and he was really cool when he rescued Frodo from Mordor.
After that it would be Bilbo. He is a great character, but mostly in The Hobbit. He was really funny, and I loved his personality. Bilbo reminds me of me.
I don't like Pippin or Merry. They annoy me, especially when Pippin threw that stone down the hole in Moria. I mean, how stupid can you get? I love it when Gandalf teases him; it's so funny. :D I did start to think they were OK in The Return of the King, though, when they became soldiers of Rohan and Gondor.
Fatty Bolger is a really cool guy. He was pretty brave volunteering to stay behind to tell Gandalf where the others had gone, even when he knew the Ringwraiths were out. I wish he was in the book more. :)
And for Frodo, well, he's a pretty good guy. I hate it at the end though when he gets all weak, though. It's kind of sad, really. Good thing his loyal Sam is there to help him. :)

I agree with you Durin's Bane. Sam is my favorite hobbit (and character!) too. He was loyal, and brave, and he wasn't afraid to speak his mind (like in Ithilen. It may have gotten him in a little bit of trouble sometimes, tho...). Merry and Pippin matured a lot by the end of the RotK.

Bilbo has got to be by favourite. He becomes quite endearing in The Hobbit and when we see him in LoTR, there are references to his learned qualities - his songs being a prime example (especially his translations of the elvish language). Of all the hobbits Bilbo is, perhaps, the only one who can be said to be in any way erudite (increased during his sojourn in Rivendell).

A distant second would be Merry. I always remember the animated version of the LoTR film when Frodo finds out that the other hobbits have been secretly spying on him. The speech that Merry gives to justify the conspiracy has always remains in my mind (the passage in the book being no exception)
