I know this thread has been done, and I thought it would be fun to try it again, for a while! (For some reason, I couldn't get back to the original topic, so we'll just start a new one.)

I love reading about Theoden at the end of "The Ride of the Rohirrim":

Suddenly the king cried to Snowmane and the horse sprang away. Behind him his banner blew in the wind, white horse upon a field of green, but he outpaced it. After him thundered the knights of his house, but he was ever before them. Eomer rode there, the white horsetail on his helm floating in his speed, and the front of the first eored roared like a breaker foaming to the shore, but Theoden could not be overtaken. I also love the passage when Sam wakes up at the Field of Cormallen:

My favourite part of the whole book is when Gandalf is forbidding the Lord of the Nazgul to enter Minas Tirith, everyone is expecting doom and then "And as if in answer there came from far away another note.
