I know this thread has been done, and I thought it would be fun to try it again, for a while! (For some reason, I couldn't get back to the original topic, so we'll just start a new one.)

I love reading about Theoden at the end of "The Ride of the Rohirrim":

Suddenly the king cried to Snowmane and the horse sprang away. Behind him his banner blew in the wind, white horse upon a field of green, but he outpaced it. After him thundered the knights of his house, but he was ever before them. Eomer rode there, the white horsetail on his helm floating in his speed, and the front of the first eored roared like a breaker foaming to the shore, but Theoden could not be overtaken. Fey he seemed, or the battle-fury of his fathers ran like new fire in his veins, and he was borne up on Snowmane like a god of old, even as Orome the Great in the battle of the Valar when the world was young. His golden shield was uncovered, and lo! it shone like an image of the Sun, and the grass flamed into green about the white feet of his steed. For morning came, morning and a wind from the sea; and darkness was removed, and the hosts of Mordor wailed, and terror took them, and they fled, and died, and the hoofs of wrath rode over them.

I also love the passage when Sam wakes up at the Field of Cormallen:

"Well, Master Samwise, how do you feel?" (Gandalf)

At last he gasped: "Gandalf! I thought you were dead!...What's happened to the world?"

"A great shadow has departed," said Gandalf, and then he laughed, and the sound was like music, or like water in a parched land; and as he listened the thought came to Sam that he had not heard laughter, the pure sound of merriment, for days upon days without count. It fell upon his ears like the echo of all the joys he had ever known. But he himself burst into tears. Then, as a sweet rain will pass down a wind of spring and the sun will shine out the clearer, his tears ceased, and his laughter welled up , and laughing he sprang from his bed.

i like loads of quotes, but heres a few:
The road must be trod, but it will be very hard. And neither strength nor wisdom will carry us far upon it. This quest may be attempted by the weak as well as the strong. Yet such is oft the course of deeds that move the wheels of the world : small hands do them because they must, while the eyes of the great are elsewhere

"I don't know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve

This is the hour of the Shire-folk, when they arise from their quiet fields to shake the towers and the counsels of the Great

"He who breaks a thing to find out what it is, has left the path of wisdom."

And suddenly he felt the Eye. There was an eye in the Dark Tower that did not sleep. He knew that it had become aware of his gaze. A fierce eager will was there. It leaped towards him; almost like a finger he felt it, searching for him. Very soon it would nail him down, know just exactly where he was. Amon Lhaw it touched. It glanced upon Tol Brandir--he threw himself from the seat, crouching, covering his head with his grey hood.

He heard himself crying out: Never, never! Or was it: Verily I come, I come to you?

The two Tolkien quotes that come to my mind are, "If you don't like my Burglar, please don't damage him." and "The road goes ever on and on down from the door where it began."

You dont become king just because some watery tart threw a sword at you....soon son all this will be yours. What? The curtains?;) Okay I'll stop ;)
"Mr Frodo sir! Please dont let him hurt me sir.Dont let him turn me into anything unatural my poor old Dad would take on so"."And you Bill Ferny get your ugly face out of sight or it will get hurt" The leaves were long, the grass was green, the hemlock umbles tall and fair."One thing you have not found in your hunting is brighter wits here you find us sitting on the feild of victory among the plunder of armies and you wonder how we came by a few well earned comforts". Slowly his hand went to his bosom and slowly he held aloft the Phial of Galadriel....The darkness receded from it,until it seemed to shine in the center of a globe of airy crystal and the hand that held it sparkled with a white fire.
"Well this is the end Sam Gamgee"said a voice by his side. And there was Frodo pale and worn and yet himself again;and in his eyes there was peace now, neither strain of will nor maddness, nor any fear. His burden was taken a way. There was the dear master of the sweet days in the Shire.
Numbskulled ninnyhammer is what I call myself when I do something totally stupid and the bath song is fun to hum when your getting ready for a bath(well without the feet made fountain leaping on high ;) )and when I go on a long journey I quote(under my breath)the Road Poem.

My favourite part of the whole book is when Gandalf is forbidding the Lord of the Nazgul to enter Minas Tirith, everyone is expecting doom and then "And as if in answer there came from far away another note. Horns, horns, horns. In dark Mindolluin's sides they dimly echoed. Great horns of the north wildly blowing. Rohan had come at last.

"All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king."

"The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began,
Now far ahead the Road has gone
And I must follow, if I can."

"Get up, Master Bag!"

And this part of Return of the King still sends shivers down my back when I read it.

"... Presently he became aware that Frodo was singing softly to himself, singing the old walking song but the words were not quite the same.

Still around the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate
And though I oft have passed them by,
A day will come at last when I
Shall take the hidden paths that run
West of the Moon, East of the Sun.

And as if in answer, from down below, coming up the road out of the valley, voices sang:

A! Elbereth Gilthoniel!
silivren penna miriel
o menel aglar elenath,
Gilthoniel, A! Elbereth!
We still remember, we who dwell
In this far land beneath the trees
The starlight on the Western Seas.

Frodo and Sam halted and sat silent in the soft shadows, until they saw a shimmer as the travellers came towards them..."
