I like 4 him and zoe girl. I'm not into the punk kind of sound. Has anyone here heard of Petra? They had a song that I cant get out of my brain and maybe you guys could help me with the lyrics or where I can find the song or something.

I've heard of Petra, in fact I have most of their albums. Which song is it you have stuck in your brain, Samwise? I can likely identify it myself or find someone who can.

BTW, I like Stryper and Whitecross, also. I'm stuck in the days of big hair. ;)

Red is the color of the blood that was shed....Forgot the rest of this verse
Brown is the color of the leaves that fall....I forgot the rest of this verse too.

Those are the only two verses I can remember and I cant find the song ANYWHERE, it has a real pretty meldoy too so that's why I asked.
BTW thanks Xrogue, and anyone who'll help.
One of my favorite songs is "Our God Is An Awsome God", Rich Mullins right.

Oh, I know all of that one! It's called the Coloring Song, and it is from on of Petra's first albums, "Never Say Die". I can write down all the lyrics for you if you'd like.

And yes, Awesome God is Rich Mullins' song. You have any of his other stuff?

Jars of Clay is ok. I've actually discovered that Lifehouse is a kinda-Christian band, although not all their music is Christian. Everything and Breathing are both awesome songs.

YES DO! I wont be coming back on here until January so if you could e-mail the lyrics to me I'd like that. :)
Actually I dont have any of Rich Mullins tapes or CDs but I want to get some, Awsome God is the BEST though he's just great, but he died of a car accident in 97 which is a bummer, I liked his voice.
DOn Fransicos songs were good to but I absolutly LOVE....This is probably dorky but I could'nt care less if it is or not.....Veggie Tales are great for listening to in the car, I like trying to imitate the voices and all. Funny.
Thanks Rouge. Looking foward to your reply :)

I listen to some Christian music, but I can't think of any particular groups I like. It just depends on the song. I like some (but not all) songs by Seven-Day Jesus and Zoe Girl (sp?).

I do like most Veggie-Tales songs. I used to help watch the nursery at church, and the kids always wanted to watch the first Veggie-Tales sing-along. As a result, I know every song from that tape. I got pretty sick of Veggie-Tales for a while, but I like them again now.

I like singing hymns (they have harmony parts, and I like singing harmony), but I don't know if that's what was meant by the thread title.

Audio Adrenalin (saw em live at the Miles Ahead Crusade in San Diego last July 4)
Out of Eden (@ MAC 2)

Rebecca St. James

Delirious?
O.C. Supertones
Point of Grace
Vienna

I just got a CD called "the end and the beginning" by a guy named Matt Maher out of Mesa, AZ. This is one of the coolest CDs I've heard in a long time. It's Matt's first CD and I don't think it's really distributed so it's probably hard to come by if you're not in the Phoenix area. A friend of mine sent it up to me.

MXPX aren't christian-rock. People just seem to think that because in some of their earlier stuff (not even every song) they sang about jesus loving you, turning to jesus, and one of my fav's, 'sugar coated poison apple'.. which is as far as i can tell, about the garden of eden. but really, they're not christian rock. They're just christians who rock ;) Strange band though. Who the hell names a band magnified plaid? Anyways, if they're christian, so is kid rock ;) (ooonly goood knows wwwhhyyy!)

Alethes
02-23-2002, 12:01 AM
What I've heard about the "magnified plaid" name is that if you magnify plaid, it looks like it has tiny crosses all over it.

I don't listen to MXPX, but I know people who do. I've heard a couple of their songs; they weren't immoral songs, but they didn't seem Christian and were pretty pointless (and hard to understand!).

haha, what a fun thread! I'm not big into Christian rock like I was in grade 10, but what I like is quirky stuff.
Newsboys "Take Me to Your Leader" album will always hold a special place in my heart, as well as "Going Public". John James was the most, um... creative song writer I've come across in a long time.
Anybody ever heard of Steve Taylor?
I also like Audio A (the plant song on Underdogs!)
O.C. Supertones (how could I not? they're from my birthplace--mission viejo, CA...just a few blocks from my old house)
Jars of Clay has a new album out, but I haven't heard it
Burlap to Cashmere (although I'm not sure what kind of music you can classify it as)
Petra? that's old stuff! They were around in the 70s w/ Larry Norman! Gotta love the coloring song, though.

most of the Christian music I listen to now is acoustic guitar, like
Michael Card (yeah, I know, your PARENTS listen to Michae Card. Shut up.)
Rich Mullins
Bebo Norman (He toured with Jennifer Knapp last fall)
and Chris Rice

Actually Petra still puts out albums. They are a LOT of fun in concert too.

Is John Schlitt still w/ Petra? I thought he was striking out on his own.

Hey, you're from Dallas/Ft.Worth area? I was there for a week once, I hope I never go back! J/k :D But really, now, the red dirt is terrible! We did get caught in a thunderstorm--I've never seen it rain that hard in my life! Very cool.

XRogue
03-10-2002, 07:33 PM
No, John Schlitt is still very much with Petra, he has done one or two solo projects, but has no plans to leave the band. Being that Petra has been around for 30 years, its a good steady job.

Heh, I'm originally from Houston, you should see the rainstorms there if the ones in D/FW impressed you. In Houston it rains like that out of a clear blue sky. And the red dirt up here is nasty for anything but growing grass (the lawn variety, stop thinking 'weed' :D ) or cotton and so forth. Have to get real dirt to grow veggies round here. Bums me out. But we had a lovely mild winter here.

Delirious rocks (gonna see them in concert next monday)
and Jars of Clay (got thier new album "The eleventh hour" - it's so-so)
Also Rich Mullins (love his lyrics but his songs are really hit and miss, either really good or really bad)
Matt Redman is great
But my biggest gripe about most Christain bands is that they are uncreative musicians. You put any Chistian band in the secular world and they wouldn't last a minute, because they're no good!!
But since they have the market cornered (Christian consumers) they feel no need to extend themselves father then they need to .
It sucks because what should be the message behind thier songs is so vital.
All that being said, does anyone thnk U2 is Christian?

And they're so friggin expensive!!! Ahhh... it's horrible. Regadless I just finished reading a book called "Walk On. The spritual journey of U2." It was written by a pastor. Seems he believes, and I do in a way as well, that you don't have to be singing Halleluja all the time. Sometimes you can look at the world and sing about what you see and sometimes *gasp* you can be mad at God because he doesn't make sense and write and sing about that. Thing is most Christians think that to be singing " I have cursed thy rod and staff. They no longer comfot me" is to be Anti-Christian.
I don't think so. Opinions?

Does anyone here like black Christian artists????:) I find they get left out of a lot of these discussions.

I think my favorite right now is Mary Mary.

U2 is a band that has several Christian members but they are not a Christian band. They didn't feel 'called' to further the Christian agenda ...whatever that is.
I know Bono has gone incognito to a Christian music festival in England...cause Tony Campollo (a popular minister) was there with him...

I agree with you BoP. But it has nothing to do with the quality of Christian music. (Some has gone mainstream though, DC Talk's Jesus Freak and Jars of Clay. Those are two of them.) People, just don't think that Christian music is cool because it doesn't talk about raping someones sister or killing your mother. Many Christians are embarrased to listed to Christian music.
I only listen to Christian and there really is an amazing selection of Christian Music.
You could name almost any band and I could name a good christian substitute - Without the cussing and raving about sex.

Yes and no. I think a lot of it has to do with quality. Someone brought it up earlier in the thread that they're just not being innovative enough, and I would have to agree with them. BUT, then I have to say that a lot of modern music is crap and not particularly innovative either. It's not just a phenomenon of christian music. And I would just like to point out here that I listen to a LOT of music (I don't like modern music), and the majority of it doesn't have cussing or sex in it. Off the top of my head, Bob Dylan and Frank Sinatra weren't overtly rude and trashy mouthed.

The duet I mentioned...Mary Mary is also having some mainstream sucess. They were kind of like Jars of Clay...they didn't intend to 'go mainstream'...it sort of just happened.

Someone started playing their song "Unshackled" in dance clubs and it went from there...surprised the group.

DC Talk

Carmen
Michael W. Smith
Chris Tomlin-Passion cds anyone? He sang at the youth camp I just got back from. Amazing band.
Crimson Clay
And yes, of course, Veggie Tales

I'm a Christian and I listen to a variety of secular music. As long as it doesn't have sex and cussing in it, I don't see a problem with some of it. God gave music to mankind, ya know? I just avoid things that are depressing and darken my mind.

I love Vegytails! (Did I spell that right?) I also love this song that I am listening to right now, it is called We Love You Jesus by Greg Long, it is great, I have it downloaded onto the computer and listen to it every time that I get on, sometime soon I will copy it onto a CD! I also like Yes Jesus loves me by Georgia Mass Choir (never heard of them, but I typed in Jesus Loves me and found it).

I just downlaoded the Color Song by Petra, it's great, I have heard my friend singing it before, and was wondering what it was called.

I am also downloading Picture Frame by LaRue, is that the right person? I don't think that I ever have listend to music by them, not sher, but is that a song that they wrote? The place that I download songs on is good, but sometimes it gets things rong and stuff.

All that I mainly listen to is Christian music, other then that, I listen to songs that have to do with LOTR (like the Balid of Bilbo Baggens) and my LOTR CD. So ya, I do like christian music- alot.

77s
Resurrection Band
Grammatrain
The Prayer Chain
Sometime Sunday
Larry Norman
POD
Rachel Rachel
Bloodgood
Darrell Mansfield
Chasing Furies

Looking at the bands that seem to be on most everyone's list in this thread, it looks like a playlist for commercial christian radio. My list are ones that have been around awhile, some have long since disbanded. with the exception of Resurrection (REZ) Band, 77s, and of course Larry Norman.

There is a Christian music industry, whose goal is to make money, and so therefore will only carry and sell what will be acceptable to the 'contemporary christian market'. but then there has always been the question as to whether 'contemporary christian music' was for entertaining christians or witnissing to non-christians. Which is it? Opinions?

And then there is the question of whether all songs have to specifically refer to Christ or Christianity in order to be considered "Christian". After reading about what Michael Card had to say about the CCM Industry, I have all but given up on it as contrived, and superficial. Card went battled depression in college, and ended up writing a song about it. The producers wouldn't let him put it on his album unless he followed it up with something positive. So he ended up writing this song called, "With Hope" (or something to that effect), and he despises it, but it's on his album. A lot of people struggle with depression. I think they should have let him be real, and not water down a real issue.

Anyone like the Benjamin Gate? Saw them at Festival Con Dios and they RULE! Also, about Christian Music being 'real music', a lot of people have the wrong impression of 'Christian' music. There aren't a lot of Christian rock/hip-hop/rap/hits stations, so a lot of people think Christian music is Rachel Lampa, Steven Curtis Chapman and Micheal W. Smith. I like these artists, but that's not all there is. There are a very good amount of Christian Rock artists like Skillet, Pillar, Beleviable Picnic, The Benjamin Gate, etc. For rap you might try KJ-52, John Rueben or T-Bone. For those of you who say you don't like Christian music, try it before you diss it! There's a lot of good 'Christian' stuff out there:D

ok now ive heard it all... ummm it might just be that in aust christian music is regarded as crap by most people so they dont bother trying to flog it off down here but the trash that does slip by the filters is the most annoying sound ive ever heard, it is widely practiced where i live that once the add thats trying to sell you songs for worship comes on then you change the channel quicksticks... and might i add that while some of theses anti christian feelings comes from anti christian sentiment most comes from the plain shite quality of the music, need proof well Bob Marley is loved down here and most of his music was speakign about rastas and jah but again it isnt loved because it is Rastafarian music but because itis good music, thats the difference...
btw dont worry about me dissing the music coz my school, not only make us sit through assemblies about christianity, but had the nerve to play Christian music at the start... they tried that once and gave up heheheheh:D

Low quality? Sher, the raidio station close to me that plays Christian music has some really anoying commersails, but other then that, in my opinion, the 'Christian' music is just as good in quality as the pop rock and oldies and country and classic and what-not.

Well, I don't listen to rock style, Christian or otherwise. Not that I think it's evil or anything, just not my style.

I like hymns, Gregorian Chants, and praise and worship.

I like REAL christian music, as in Sacred music(such as masses). I find anythin else that is in the christian section either scary or cheesy(of courseno offense to anyone about this, just stating what i like and my opinion on nowaday christian music)

The're a band made up of a few guys from Ohio--Their music isn't degrading at all (I agree with you that some "Christian" music definitely is, they make some pretty terrible comparisons). Some of Relient K's songs are just random stuff that doesn't make much sense.

To Sun-star: It's never to late for Christianity! What, do you expect you'll always have the chance later?

Well, it's over a year since I said that, but I think I meant that it was too late for me to be converted to Christianity because I already was. It was a joke.

Though is a joke a joke if you have to explain it? :D

I agree with u Mercutio, its never too late. Trust me, i've heard more than enough stories. But this thread is about music. Relient K is awasome. My friend went from hating them to them being her fav group!

JESUS ROCKS THIS WORLD! correction: when we are talking music (and Rock in particular)
MANSON ROCKS THIS WORLD!
i was disgusted again when all the religious folk started abusing Manson fans outside of a concert:rolleyes: same old same old, about them and Manson himself worshipping satan, Manson responded accordingly with "Satan worships us mother****ers" i thought that was great... i wonder if i would be tolerated going to a christian 'music' concert and abusing all there fans, because they didnt believe as i did, id like to try that one day...

I think Christian music is of poor quality. I mean come on you don't exactly have to be a good songwriter to make Christian music. I mean Creed started off as a Christian band. That proves that you don't need any talent.

I don't know if any of you watch South Park, but there was a great one on a little while ago. It was about Christian music: very funny.

I heard about that south park.THough funny,it's wrong.:p

Christian music can be of very good quality. I DO admit that some is low quality, though. Some artists seem to just take advantage of the industry in order to get into the music biz. These I don't like. But bands like DCTalk are very good, even outside the Christian scene. And being a Christian artist,
you DO have to write good lyrics, in order for it to BE Christian music. This is because you must tell something you beleive with all your heart,in amanner that others understand.

You're right about that. It is queer. People really get carried away. It's disgusting. I hate to hear stupid, cheesy things like that. People don't realize that you should not take so much liberty with something so sacred. Too bad, though. Can't be helped....:(

hahahaha i cant wait to hear some Christian "Rock" disgusting...

There was a funny episode of King of the Hill on the other day where Bobby get's involved with a Christian rock group, kind of. There's a good line Hank had when he was arguing with Bobby's mentor.

Hank: You're not making Christianity better, you're making rock and roll worse!

:p
