Wow! It's been a whole day waiting to get back on the board to give this answer! This is Legolas talking to Gimli, Merry, and Pippin in Minas Tirith...

"A wonder they are to me and a trouble to my heart."

New one:

"A fool, but an honest fool, you remain, Perigrin Took."

Balthamos
03-02-2001, 05:44 PM
that was from the Palantir, the next sentance is 'Wiser ones might have done worse in such a pass.'

My quote:
'Aye, and what it knows!' said a second voice.

Finduilas

At once four men came striding though the fern from different directions.

Next:

I give!

Finduilas

Imagine this, I have to answer my own trivia questions
The next sentence is
Treebeard carried the hobbits in his arms as on the previous day.

Next:
I'll cut your throat.

It's also from the Two Towers.

Sorry for not posting here, I've been gone for a week. Unfortunately I don't know what this one's from. Findaluin, why do you always make yours so hard? Harder isn't necessarily always better (in my opinion).

Finduilas
03-09-2001, 07:22 PM
I gave a clue!!!!

Here's another.
It's from the second half of the book.

Tar Melian
03-11-2001, 12:16 AM
Ditto! Believe it or not , I do have another life other than looking up hard quotes! I've been too busy to look this one up without any ideas, BUT I'm going to sit down in a little bit and do just that!

Tar Melian
03-11-2001, 02:03 AM
After the second hint, it was pretty easy...this is
Frodo to Gollum as he struggles with Sam at being caught.....

Gollum collasped and went as loose as wet string.

New one!

"He should have been borne in honor into this city," he said.

Balthamos
03-11-2001, 11:56 AM
from The Houses of Healing, next sentance "He has well repaid my trust, for if Elrond had not yielded to me neither of you would have set out..."

my qoute: 'I am,' said Aragorn.
Fron the Fellowship of the Ring

added later--- I have no idea why I gave you this. What was running through my head at the time... anyway greatest apologies to everyone :) I would refuse to answer one like that. Anyway, I could have sworn I gave you much more hints than that.... oh well. You guys are amazing :)

Finduilas
03-11-2001, 09:07 PM
You are nasty. That one does NOT jump out at me with a location!

Lief Erikson
03-11-2001, 10:12 PM

Finduilas
03-12-2001, 12:16 AM
This is the sort of quote I give you lot?

Lief Erikson
03-12-2001, 05:32 AM
Quite difficult and a little nasty because of that. That doesn't mean that sinchy is better, just a little moderation between that and impossible is preferable (In my opinion).

So this is from the Fellowship of the Ring, is it? I'll have to look for it tomorrow. Right now I can hardly think, much less search.

Tar Melian
03-12-2001, 04:18 PM
Fin, I can't believe you're stumped! Oh, well.....
SOMEone has borrowed my FotR book, and so I can't look this up. BUT, it seems like Aragorn says something short like this at Elronds house when Borimir is first introduced and meets Aragorn, and he doesn't believe who Aragorn claims to be. Will someone look there?

Lief Erikson
03-12-2001, 06:31 PM
Sorry, I couldn't find it on first glance and then came school. I'll take a second run through soon . . .

Tar Melian
03-13-2001, 12:16 AM
That's OK, I've got my book back and found it. Aragorn is talking to Frodo about going with him in the company of 9....

"And the Sword-that-was-broken shall be reforged ere I go out to war."

New one:

"...Then you will see Gandalf the Grey uncloaked."

Lief Erikson
03-13-2001, 12:29 AM
He took a step towards the hobbit, and he seemed to grow tall and menacing; his shadow filled the little room.

And on to the next!

He sprang to his feet and issued some orders. At once the men who were gathered round him broke up into small groups, and went off this way and that, vanishing quickly into the shadows of the rocks and trees. Soon only Mablung and Damrod remained.

Tar Melian
03-13-2001, 02:49 AM
"Now you, Frodo and Samwise, will come with me and my guards," said Faramir.

New one:

Very tall he was, and his beard was long, and he was grey and old, save that his eyes were keen as stars; and he looked at them and bowed and said, "All is now ready."

Lief Erikson
03-13-2001, 05:04 PM
That was a good one!

Then Cirdan led them to the Havens, and there was a white ship lying, and upon the quay beside a great grey horse stood a figure robed all in white awaiting them.

And here's the next:

A brief vision he had of swirling cloud, and in the midst of it towers and battlements, tall as hills, founded upon a mighty mountainthrone above immeasurable pits; great courts and dungeons, eyeless prisons sheer as cliffs, and gaping gates of steel and adamant: and then all passed. :D

Finduilas
03-13-2001, 08:04 PM
If I can find ROTK I'll answer this one <goes scrambling madly around the room searching>

There it is!

Towers fell and mountains slid; walls crumbled and melted, crashing down; vast spires of smoke and spouting steam went billowing up, up, until they toppled like an overwhelming wave, and its wild crest curled and came foaming down upon the land.

Tar Melian
03-14-2001, 08:08 PM
This is Beregond speaking to Pippin:

"And the Lord Denethor is unlike other men: he sees far."

New one:

Upon it sat a man so bent with age that he seemed almost a dwarf; but his white hair was long and thick and fell in great braids from beneath a thin golden circlet set upon his brow.

Finduilas
03-15-2001, 12:21 AM

Finally something doable! Congradulations, Fin! But how come the hint is coming from Tar Melian?

Tar Melian
03-15-2001, 05:23 PM
My hint WAS from me! I gave it apparently the same moment Fin gave the answer! When I went back to check my post, I never saw Fin's answer...weird! (That happened with me and Balthmos earlier.)

Tar Melian
03-16-2001, 03:12 PM
Fin, could you tell us what book?

Finduilas
03-16-2001, 06:59 PM
The Two Towers, Second book

Tar Melian
03-22-2001, 03:33 PM
Fin, I have been looking for your quote for days, I thought it would be an easier one to find...wrong! Please tell us the answer, and let's move on...if there is anybody out there interested in still playing?

Finduilas
03-22-2001, 08:45 PM
Ok.
Presently, groping and fumbling in the dark, they found that the opening on the left was blocked: either it was a blind, or else some great stone had fallen in the passage.

Here's a new one:
Sam sat down heavily with a red face.

Clues right off: The Two Towers volume two.

Finduilas
03-24-2001, 07:50 PM
Anyone still here? I did give a slightly easier quote this time.

Balthamos
03-25-2001, 11:48 AM
when Faramir is talking to Frodo and Sam interrupts.

next sentance: "Faramir turned to Frodo again."

(btw I'm sorry about my impossible quote everybody :) I haven't got any idea why I gave it to you! and I could have sworn I gave you what book it was from ;) )

my quote:

" 'As you go down to the water,' he said, 'you will find that the trees will fail, and you will come to a barren country.' "

I'm not sure if I should give any hints... It's not very difficult compared to some I've seen you people do! But I'll be online in case you do :)

Finduilas

Like one of my first quotes to you ppl was a very difficult one but it had a name in it not mentioned much in the book, so someone did the obvious thing...)

It's At The Sugn if the Prancing pony, next sentance is Frodo saying "I expect it's homelike enough inside."

My quote! ' "As you will," said Frodo.'
before you go crazy I will tell you it's in the Two Towers :) No, I didn't mean to give you that with no hints...

Finduilas

Finduilas

Tar Melian

to get time to sit a minute and think, but...easy enough...This is Gandalf speaking in "The council of Elrond":

it's in FOTR, Gandalf speaking.

Tar Melian
06-03-2001, 07:19 PM
since I've checked in! Ok, since noone has guessed this I will tell....

This was Gandalf speaking after the The Company heard howling wind and "fell voices" as they tried to pass over Caradhras. The next line is: " 'But what can we do?' cried Pippin miserably."

Finduilas
06-03-2001, 08:49 PM

"At once he was aware that hearing was sharpened while sight was dimmed, but otherwise than in Shelob's lair."
That last line came from the last chapter in the Two Towers.

My sentence is "Do as you please in your madness, but let me first get down from this horse!"

(hint: this is also from The Two Towers)

ladyisme
07-03-2001, 02:19 AM
OK since no one was able to find that one I'll tell you.
"I wish to see no eyes!" is the next line and it is in chapter seven of book three "The road to Isengard" on page 154.

Try this quote "Now I am wondering what can have happened."
You'll find this one in book one in "Fellowship of the Ring".

PS I'm sorry that I'm late in writing back.

Amandil
07-10-2001, 06:40 PM
That's spoken by Frodo to Gildor in the Woody End, regarding Gandalf's absence.

Here's one:

'It has been guessed already...for there have been strange portents here of late.'

Balthamos
07-23-2001, 03:09 PM

"It has been guessed already,...for there have been strange portents here of late." was said by Ingold to Gandalf and Pippin in Book Five chapter one, Minas Tirith.

That last quote was spoken by Strider on the Last Bridge and the next sentence is "He held out his hand, and showed a single pale-green jewel."

here's your next fun challenge: "But we are envying Sam, not you."

(hint:see book two)

andustar
08-13-2001, 02:12 PM
right.

next sentance is :
"If you have to go then it will be a punishment for any of us to be left behind, even in Rivendell"

spoken by Merry just after the Council of Elrond.
now, to repay the 'something very strange' which I searched hours for (unsuccessfuly), try and find:

"You must trust me."

from the Two Towers

(now what I really want is the 'Evil' face on ezboard right now ;) )

Fat middle
08-13-2001, 02:35 PM
i'm not sure of this. what i've found is not a complete sentence...

"We must trust Master?" said Gollum doubtfully. in the forbidden pool.

have i fallen in your tramp? :) i'll wait for confirmation

andustar
08-13-2001, 02:55 PM
WOW that is... very fast! you were not expected to remember that sentance!

yes that was it. But what do you mean, not a complete sentance?

Fat middle
08-13-2001, 03:36 PM
complete sentence: fom dot to dot. "I will save you, but you must trust me." weren't so the rules? it's been a time since i last played this...

okey, now find this:
The pursuit would follow you and leave us in peace, I think. FOTR

andustar
08-13-2001, 03:49 PM
hey, you're right! I'd swear it was a full sentance when I last looked at it! well, for a while I checked that part for my quote as a full sentance but couldn't find it, so... extra marks to you! ;) and sorry about that. :)

well anyway your quote was easy, next sentance is "It is you, Frodo, and that which you cear which brings us all in peril." Glorfindel, in Flight to the Ford after Frodo refuses to ride Asfaloth.

now find this:

'It is a great host and follows us hard,' said Aragorn.

Two Towers

not that difficult, I hope. At least, if you could find what I gave you before this is SO easy...

Fat middle
08-13-2001, 05:00 PM
hurra!!:) in less than two minutes. And it's been a year since i last read LOTR. "They bring fire", said Theoden reaching to the Hornburg

now, try this:
"Or he will not slay thee in thy turn." ROTK

andustar
08-13-2001, 05:13 PM
yup I foud it in less than one min !!!! although for a moment 'he will NOT slay thee' got me :)

next sentance
"He will bear thee away to the houses of lamentation, beyond all darkness, where thy fless shall be devoured ...(etc, I'm sure you get the idea)"

next, from Fellowship of the Ring:
"I wish we could get away!" said Merry

Fat middle
08-13-2001, 07:15 PM
good try, but... i've found it!!:D
"Why doesn't Gandalf do something quick?" said Pippin
you had almost beaten me. in fact i had closed Iexplorer and preparing to go to bed when... wait, "get away..." it must be from Moria... and i was wrong!!! they hadn't get into yet:D but when i was opening the book my eyes were directly to that sentence.

and now:
The song ended and there was a burst of laughter and clapping.

oh, shan, do the french version still have "Frodon" and "Bilbon" as names for "Frodo" and "Bilbo"? :D

(oh, and i can't participate in this game, since i have etext version... quite easy to do a search)

andustar
08-15-2001, 02:13 PM

shan- I have a cuisin who would also want to play, except she speaks hebrew :D

ick, so did I. I haven't found the quote yet, but I'll be looking.

ringbearer
09-05-2001, 11:43 PM
This is my first try at this game...and if they are all this hard, it may be my last...but I found it! from "At the Sign of the Prancing Pony"
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"They led their ponies under the arch, and leaving them standing in the yard they climbed up the steps."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now I will try to find another stumper!

ringbearer
09-05-2001, 11:57 PM
OK, for now an easy one from ROTK... I can't figure out how to enclose the quote in lines as others do, so I will just make it red.

"But I did not summon you,' said Aragorn, 'save only in wish.

Melian
09-06-2001, 02:26 AM
Hmm....it's been awhile! Glad to see this thread still going on the new site.

Ringy, this is when Aragorn meets up with the Rangers. Next line is: "...My thoughts have often turned to you, and seldom more than tonight; yet I have sent no word..."

New one:

..."If I hear 'not allowed' much oftener,...I'm going to get angry."
ROTK

Finduilas
09-06-2001, 05:54 PM
That was an easy one.
"Can't say as I'd be sorry to see it," said Robin lowering his voice.

Next:
You aren't fit to walk any further.
ROTK

ladyisme
09-06-2001, 06:54 PM
"They shouldn't have let you walk at all; but you must forgive them." is the next line and it is from The Houses Of Healing.

Now try this from Return of the King:
"I also will come for I do not fear the dead."

ringbearer
09-06-2001, 08:48 PM
"I hope that the forgotten people will not have forgotten how to fight,' said Gimli; 'for otherwise I see not why we should trouble them.'

Too easy! Try this...fromRotK

'What then would you have,' said Gandalf, 'if your will could have its way?'

andustar
09-07-2001, 03:03 PM
easy. Next sentance:

"I would have things as they were in all the days of my life," answered Denethor, "and in the days (..)"

okay, find this:
"Very well," said Sam heavily.

Two Towers

OK...here goes Two Towers

'Its a lie!' hissed Gollum,

Incanus
09-09-2001, 08:44 PM
"It's a lie!" hissed Gollum, and an evil light came into his eyes at the naming of Aragorn.

OK, now here's my sentence:

"Here is another riddle!" said Gimli.

It's from The Two Towers

Finduilas
09-10-2001, 06:32 PM
But it needs the light of day and for that we cannot wait.

Next:

FR

andustar
09-12-2001, 03:02 PM
easy enough :)
next sentance "But there you are, Hobbits must stick together, especially Bagginses." Bilbo in Rivendell, having given Frodo the mithril coat.

now find this: Two Towers

"He has been much occupied."

Btw I notice that we now put the book immediately, not as a hint. Should we carry on doing this? or only with harder ones? or only at asking for a 'hint'?...

ladyisme
09-14-2001, 02:56 PM
"Our orders came from Treebeard, who has taken over the management of Isengard." is the next line.

Now try this one:
"Most noble hobbit, it leaves me deep in your debt."
also from the Two Towers.

andustar
09-15-2001, 04:35 AM
said by Gimli in Flotsam and Jetsam. Next sentance is

"Well I am going back into the open air, to see what the wind and sky are doing!" said Legolas.

find this:

"How many are there?" he thought.

Two Towers also.

((please tell me what you think about giving the book or not: I could have got "Most noble hobbit, it leaves me deep in your debt." without the book just as easily but there are many that I find impossible even WITH the book... what do you think? for instance the one I just gave, would you have preferred it with or without the hint?))

ringbearer

Here it is...
'Thirty or forty from the tower at least, and a lot more than that from down below, I guess...

I think including the book is a good thing.

Try this from RotK...

Grond crawled on.

andustar
09-17-2001, 12:55 PM
That actually occurs twice... :) also, I would try not to have names in your quotes; or at least only have common ones. There is an index you know, and Grond only has one page number... One of my very firs quotes when Trivia game was only just started was like yours, and I was very amazed at how quickly it was solved. On asking how, I was told they'd looked it up

Anyway, the next (two) sentances are:Upon it's housing no fire would catch; and though now and then some great beast would go (...) and: The drums rolled wildly.

Melian
10-21-2001, 12:42 PM

New one:

"So fear me not!"

rashbold
10-24-2001, 03:03 AM
To those who do not know the meaning, i.e., translations of Gandalf's spells, here it is:

Annon edhellen, edro hi ammen!
Fennas nogothrim, lasto beth lammen!

Elvish gate, open now for us!
Doorway of the Dwarf-folk, listen to the words of my tongue!

Note: the hi is the lenited form of si "now"
ammen is a compound of an "for" and men "us"
beth is the lenited form of peth "word".

Naur an edraith ammen! Naur dan i ngaurhoth!

Fire [be] for the saving of us! Fire against the werewolf-host!

Right people, you all know the first thing I do when I get to Entmoot after a long break- revive the trivia thread! Sheesh, no one posts here unless I'm here! see the end of my post for that

rashbold, I assume you meant to post a new topic, not to reply :)

as for the quote itself... I'm thinking... haven't done this in months. lessee, probably in the Two Towers, am I right? hmm....

Ok, yes this is me. I think I'll put this at the end of all my posts today. I always seem to do this. I enthusiastically post loads every day for a while and then suddenly, I'm gone. I don't know why, it just happens. This time I had tried to stay away from the net altogether as I have important exams coming up in, er, two weeks... I even tried to not read (that lasted exactly six days before I gave up) but it doesn't work. So this is how it works with me. Sorry people. I won't be here for a while, if I can just manage to stay away :)

Sam is counting the day for he had lost count in Lorien. The scene is on the journey down the great river.

Here we go to the next one:
'Then lost it must be,' said Gimli. For what help is there to send thither, and how could it come there in time?'
