I can't understand the problem people have with The Silmarillion. The problem I had was trying to figure out what 'ere' meant :)
I actualy started reading The Silmarillion because I found the long descriptive writing of The Lord of the Rings heavy going.

So how come the Ban was not selective? Is that not unfair? The 'good' side of the Noldor had to endure enormous hardships anyway because of the 'bad' side. Just think of the Helcaraxe.
Did the Valar take that into acount?

Well look at it this way.
We all have to suffer now because of Adam and eve.
Is that not unfair?
and no I'm not trying to start a religion conversation! I don like those, I'm just trying to answer you.

Did the Valar take that into acount? It kind of was selective. Feanor and his sons were more doomed then any other of the Noldor I think And that was the Doom of Mandos It was laid on all of the Exiles for the Kinslaying, but Feanor and company for his sworn oath. The ban actually had nothing to do with the Kinslaying did it? The ban came from the Noldor defying the Valar and leaving Valinor when they were told not to.
