View Full Version : poster's LOTR alter egos

What would we poster's be in LOTR

I've limiting this question only to the LOTR period.

Now you do not have to pick a particular character you could just pick a type.

First what do you think other posters would be AND why.

Then what you think YOU would be and WHY.

I don't have a beed on many posters 'cos i'm relatively new

so please don't feel slighted if I left you out

Mike Martinez I see as an Elrond type. Wise in lore but only pops in occasionally to dispense his knowledge.

Anduin and Sister golden hair I see as wise Elven or Gondorian women. Knowledgeable and balanced.

tesseract12 (13) I see as a brandybuck or took hobbit. Young and full of youthful exuberance

inoldonil a young elven lore master or gondorian one. well versed and helpful

playgirl a beautiful young serving girl at the prancing pony

wayfarer a witty wordsmith ( but a belligerent ninny at times :)
a black numenorean ( I do not mean skin color:) because he is a purist and despenses his superior judgement to all inferiors ( non numenoreans ( non purist)

I've a question are the black numenoreans and the Corsairs of Umbar the same?
and Did they fight WITH Sauron in the War of the Ring?

for me i like to learn. i've 3 degrees already ( not saying i'm super smart i just like to learn) and i'm heading back to school when my teaching assignment is over for at least one more. If I specialize then maybe two.
I'm well traveled. I've hit very continent save anarctica. ( well i've only flown over africa)
I like war arts.
and I like THE arts.

i'm in pretty good shape and I come from a family with longevity genes

I'd probably say i'd be an Elf of rivendell

well i'm eager to hear what y'all have to say

Thank you afroelf. I will take the Elven woman as opposed to the Gondorion woman.

May I ask how old you are? You seem to have done alot in life. I though you were a teenager.

I see you and Inoldonil as Elven loremasters.

I see Kirinki54 as an elf aswell. He reminds me of Legolas.

Darth tater, I see as an Ent.

I see Ben as Gandalf

Michael Martinez I see as an Aragorn type. He can't be an Elf. He is always too tired.:)

I will have to think on some others and come back.

I see Ben as being Bergil for some reason. Anduin as Rose or maybe Goldilocks, Darth Tater I seem to think is a dragon(no offense meant), Tessarect as being some mischevious Took and Leif Erikson(even though I have'nt seen him for forever)as being Treebeard or Eomer.

The Black Númenóreans (who were ofcourse white-skinned) lived among the Umbarians. They mingled with that people (Umbar was the most northerly of the Southron's realms), and by the War of the Ring it seems they were hard to find. The only one we actually meet in the LR narrative is the Mouth of Sauron.

I am actually a Hobbit at heart :)

MM is definitely Elrond.

Tesseract - Pippin, for reasons stated in previous posts.

Inoldonil and ringbearer could be Elven loremasters of some sort.

Darth Tater - Barliman Butterbur ;). Well-intentioned, but tends to screw things up :p.

Fat middle - Sam Gamgee. He's always reliable and can be counted on to do his part.

Afro elf... I'd say you're a dark skinned ent-with a bush sprouting out of your head. The imagery is just too great.

I wouldn't equate myself with a black numenorean... More likely a Noldor. (Ick. I hate noldor, but the similarity is there) The black numenoreans were despots only interested in empire building. The noldor were smart, good with words, and incredibly haughty.

That sounds more like me, although I could also be thingol, and he's a character I like much better. Or Eol.

I chose black numenoreans they were haughty also. Weren't they the ones who did not want Numenorean blood tainted with that of middle men. I also felt being of the upper crust of gondorian society they would be rather well educated in the arts.

I´m sure you would be a great Amarie. For example she was smart enough to stay away from that little trip to Middle Earth... Actually, there is very little information about her. She and Finrod were in love in Valinor before the Exile. They would have been pretty young then, so we are given the impression that they were in love probably from childhood. Amarie was of the Vanyar, and of course, not permitted to join in the Exile, either because she was Vanyarin and few of them joined, or because she was still under parental control at that time, or both. Tolkien was very vague concerning her. In the HoMe though, she and Finrod are reunited in Valinor after his reembodyment. I believe that Michael Martinez said once that he believed that Gildor Inglorion may be the son of Finrod and Amarie, although I don't see how because Gildor tells Frodo that he is an Exile, which leads me to believe that he was part of the following of Finrod and Fingolfin when they crossed the ice. However, Gildor says he is of the house of Finarfin. Who knows?

*throws more popcorn at Sister for good measure*

Concerning the 'Gildor Inglorion of the House of Finrod' passage, Tolkien changed 'Finrod' to 'Finarfin' in the Second Edition (though this change is not incorporated in other later editions, I guess it should be).

Michael Martinez touched on this in an article recently, I think it was his Finweans article.

'Inglorion' means 'son of Inglor'. Ofcourse when the passage was originally written (as Sister points out), Inglor was him who we know as Finrod (and Finrod was him who we know as Finarfin [still with us?]).

But now we know that Gildor was the son of Inglor, some unknown Elf of the House of Finarfin. So who was Inglor? Finarfin had four children: Finrod, Angrod, Aegnor and Galadriel (not Orodreth, Tolkien decided against this, his name was changed to Arothir and he became Angrod's son). Angrod's descent seems to be well recorded, Aegnor had no children, and if Gildor was descended from Galadriel I'll eat my shoe. That may not sound like a professional argument, but you don't want to see me eat my shoe. Or I don't want to eat my shoe. Don't make me eat my shoe! *leers*

So that leaves Finrod. It is said in Of Beren and Lúthien that Finrod returned to the Living and 'walks with his father' in Aman, or something very close to that. MM's theory is thus logically that Finrod and Amárië had a child after Finrod's return, or more than one. They could have had a child named Inglor, or Inglor could be their grandson. Either Inglor or Gildor or both could have returned to Middle-earth in the Second Age, before the Downfall of Númenor, but one thing is certain: Finrod was Inglor's son.

'Who was Inglor?' you ask? That's what this whole dang post was about, pay more attention.

afro-elf
11-03-2001, 12:05 AM
but one thing is certain: Finrod was Inglor's son.

do you mean inglor was finrod's son

maybe inglor was a child of finrod and amarie BEFORE the exile.

gildor says he is an exile.

if he came later then he would not be an exile

Ñólendil
11-03-2001, 12:19 AM
LOL! There goes the certainty. No, actually I meant: Gildor is Inglor's son.

Gildor would be an Exile, in a loose sense: he would be one of the people of the Exiles. All the Noldor who left Aman and came to Middle-earth called themselves the Etyañgoldi, or 'Exiled Noldor'. Gildor could very well say 'we are exiles', even if he himself had last left the Blessed Realm by permission.

On the other hand Gildor does not seem to hold the kind of sanctity possessed by Glorfindel. I would venture to guess that Gildor was born in Middle-earth, and that it was his father who had left Aman. On the third hand (if you are an ape), we do not see as much of Gildor as we do of Glorfindel.

maybe inglor was a child of finrod and amarie BEFORE the exile.

That's part of the problem, we know for sure that before his death Finrod had no children. Galadriel asked him why this should be, and that's when he had that dark forboding about him not having any Kingdom that a son should inherit, and that he would go into darkness because of an Oath. After which, the narrator explains that she whom he had loved was Amárië of the Vanyar, who had not been permitted to leave Aman.

In this case Tolkien did alter the words, for the Second Edition. The words there are 'Gildor Inglorion of the House of Finarfin'. Perhaps this was only in the English version, but the change appears to have been overlooked in even later editions.

I dont know much about the elves, I think I like them better if they are mysterious and not too much light is shed on thier ancient history, they're as beautifull as the stars but like stars if you shine a light on them they go out and lose some of their beauty but if you let them alone then they shine with a beauty that somehow sings out and makes you want to weep for their beauty. If I were to lose my eyesight the last thing I would want to look at would be the stars and Orion.

I kinda picture myself as a Dunadain Ranger... like a female Aragorn....

I Love elves, nature, travelling etc, as does he, and we are both very knowledgeable.
Much older internally than I look... (He doesn't look like he's 80!)
Devoting my life to other people...
Very unsure of myself...

*must look for other similarities*

If I were to lose my eyesight the last thing I would want to look at would be the stars and Orion.

Beautifully said, and that's so sweet that you want to spend your last seeing moments looking at me! :D

BoP: a rohirrim lass with a tongue as sharp as a knife (no really, it suits you)

Menelvagor: one of the Beornings (don't ask me why)

1st thanks for calling me a sindarin elf. I'm not as rustic as the silvan or the avari but not as noble the noldor. I think I can go for that.

I think MIRRILLE is the ent wife. She is not the hasty type.

I think you nailed BoP perfect. I'd add that she spent time in gondor learning. she's got some brains behind that fire.

Cirdan would be a wise -man type maybe gondorian. I see him as being urbane as opposed to northern Dunadain.

Menelvagor I apologize but I don't have a clear image of you

And Earniel as I said in the rivendell post. I don't see you as a girlie girl. The pic of you and frog is stuck in my head.

that could be the signs of a tyrrant from Numenor :p

Yea most people wanna be elves so it's hard to convinces some of them otherwise
Tessar/ tessaract 12 is an example EVERYONE thought of him as a hobbit but he refused to accept it.

some people think that because they like Elven things it makes them elvish. But it aint necesarily so.

for me its seperating noldar and sindar from Gondorians that gets tricky

They are quite similar. You could say the children of numenor are mortal elves.

Its hard for me to judge you because our only real contact is the rpg.

If don't think I could necessarily place myself in Middle Earth. I would have to be an 'elfit' (I cannot remember who coined that term) I suppose, because I show a lot of hobbity characteristics, but I personally think I can be downright elvish at times (not in terms of wisdom, necessarily, just...something).

If we can choose for ourselves also, I would either be an Elf of Mirkwood (female warrior elf, of course! ), or a female Ranger, or a hobbit lassie. :D

I'd would most likely be a Rider of Rohan because I like horses and would fit the description of men alot better than elves.

physically i would most probably be a rivendell elf, mentally one of the elves of lothlorien...

i'm 5'8 and small boned with very black hair

people tell me everything from "beautiful" to "gorgeous" but that is their opinion

i'm observant, at times haughty, have extreme difficulty adjusting to new situations and changes...

i'm a big stargazer (my bedroom window happens to be right under the sunroom roof and faces a lot of trees, so on clear nights, i would climb out on the roof just to gaze at stars)

i'm also obsessed with decorations that are nature oriented and beautiful...

if i really want to go far with this, well, i'm chinese, so i come from a race with a rather long history just like the elves, hehe...

I think I would most likely equal a resident of Bree. I always like to hear news, it's nice and suburban there, more lazy than in the Shire or pretty much anywhere else. (the Shire has yardwork. Others have governmental conflicts and such). And in person, I for some reason give the impression of being permenantly stoned, so I'd fit in well as a hobbit in the Prancing Pony.

Despite that he is classical music composer historically, I imagine hectorberlioz(which is me. I am so conceited) here at entmoot he sounds like he is a very high-class elf, not the romantic type of elf, a real warrior/ leader(lol). No, just kidding, i dont know what he is at entmoot.
