(question inspired by poll found here (http://www.theonering.net/index.shtml) )

This poll had only "evil" characters, though!

If I still "dressed up" for Halloween...I guess I would be Gandalf.

I suppose a Nazgul simply because I already have the long black cape and hood.

I will say this is not trick or treat for me cause I am way to old for that. So, in my case, we will make it a party. I was going to chose Galadriel, but she didn't see any action like battle and stuff. Plus, I would have to go to the party with Celeborn, and I don't think I would like that. So I think that since I would want to be an elf, and there really was not alot of exciting women elves in the books, I would pick Legolas, so I could carry around a bow all night long. Then again i wouldn't mind dressing up like Glorfindel. He was cool looking.

Since I would want to be an elf, I would be Arwen, cause she has dark hair, and I do as well. I know she doesnt have much of a role, but I think dressing up as an elf would be enough. If I had a second choice, I would say.... an Ent... I actually dressed up as a tree one year. I rented a costume from a store that had stuff used in plays. I went to someone's party and they gave me a little bean-stuffed tree frog as a prize. :D

or else I would be Varda, Lady of the Stars

Tsk tsk, Sister. Doesn´t matter. (BTW I am one year older than you...)

This Halloween is going to be full of good guys? Well, I better be a Balrog then, and get the loot. They are scary!

too old for trick-or-treating? that's awful... this is the first year in my life i won't be going! (OK, so the last 5 years some friends & i would go xmas caroling on halloween & use the phraes 'trick or treat!" as we ran down the streets...)

now, which character would i dress up as?

hmm, can't do Luthien or Earendil, no imitation-Silmaril costume jewelry...

Sauron? Frodo? it'd be hard to disguise a finger that shouldn't be there...

a Balrog? hmm... wings, or no wings...? :P

a Hobbit? *looks at feet* maybe with enough Rogaine...

Arwen? oh, but do i wear the white/grey outfit described in "Many Meetings" or a brown leather Xena dress?

Bombadil? now really, where on earth are you going to find yellow boots?

so, by far the easiest costume choice would be -

the Watcher in the Water! all you need is your very own portable pool of dark, murky water, some tentacles which can be hacked off (by drunken revelers?) & reattached, & you're ready to party!

I use my Ren. Fair costum every year and dress up as Éowyn, it is really cool beacuse it is all made out of real leather, and I have a sowrd w/ sheath to top it off, though I am not allowed to take it to school:(

Tree? Beat me, I ACTED as a tree :( not that I minded.

I gotta dress as a Balrog, get a spiked tail, some nice little wings, and most importantly, a spiked whip which I'll crack all night and listen to the "Ow"s.

Yellow boots? LoL, the most popular TV character in this country wears yellow boots.

And talking about this country, we don't celebrate Halloween anyway so bleh.

If you're on a tight budget, arynetek, try GHan-buri-Ghan or one of the Wild Men (or Wild Women?). You'll only need some sheaves of real or imitation long grass, . :) ;)

You'll need to put on some weight though

If you are on a really tight budget, go as Gollum! Gollum doesn't wear clothes, let alone jewelry. He just runs around naked and dirty!

ya, that would really go well in this cold nasty weather that i'm not used to...

but this IS an art school, i could just say i'm doing a performance piece...

IRL i'm going as a victorian Elf - no Tolkien intent, sorry y'all...

at my Library as Sam. If you wanted to be a Hobbit you would'nt need the Rogaine, just take one of those little hairy ponytails chop it up and glue it to your feet and go barefoot, this way you wont need to shave your feet ;)

I would have to say I would go as a dwarf warrior from the iron hills. They look really cool in my mind when I read The Hobbit. All I need is a battle ax, a sword, a shield, and some armor. Oh yeah, and about 200 extra pounds.

hmm it looks like i might actually be dressing up tomorrow... and i really do want to try to be arwen... any suggestions on how the costume should be? what would be typical arwen clothing? would she have stereotypical pointy elf ears? (my ears already kind of stick out) should my hair be up or down? how bout glitter? should i find makeup to make my skin look fair? any other thoughts, comments or suggestions? i'm going costume shopping tomorrow at the last minute, and i'd like to get feedback! or else i could go as just a generic elf... or something else....

hmmm or i also was thinking of being Varda, Lady of the Stars even though that's a bit more obscure.... any comments on that?

I was just introduced to the world of Tolkien a few months ago. I have only read The Hobbit and LotR. Who is Varda, besides what I already know from your previous posts on this thread?

Do you have a really nice dress Varda? A dress of a dark color with a shawl of a lighter color would look REALLY nice and clasped at the throat with a peice of frail looking matching costume jewelry . Maybe a silver cord with a BIG rhinestone worked into the materiel would do for a circlet. And for your hair find some hair glitter and put a bit of it in your hair and put some sliver stuff by your eyes and wow! As for face lightener use baby powder then spray some type of flower water on your dress so you wont smell like baby powder.

I think Phelan Kell that Varda is the surname of Ebereth the maker of the stars.

galadriel
10-30-2001, 08:04 PM
Varda isn't a surname, but it's Elbereth's name in Quenya. Same difference, though.

In past years I've gone as Gandalf, Gollum and an orc. All of which were fun, though nobody knew what I was. (Based the costumes on the Rankin Bass animated Hobbit Movie)

Ñólendil

galadriel, that's not quite right, either. 'Elbereth' as I suppose you know means 'Star-queen', while Varda means 'Lofty'. So Varda is simply a name that the Vala whom the Sindar called Elbereth had, in the language of the Elves of Valinor.

Inoldonil is correct that Elbereth and Varda are the same being and that Elbereth was the Sindarin name for Varda. You can find this info in the Silmarillion, although Elbereth is mentioned in LOTRs. She is one of the Valar. The wife of Manwe who is the head Vala. Each Vala was given a charge in nature by Eru. Varda was in charge of making the stars. She is most revered by the Elves.

Glitter in the hair is always pretty. Wear some pretty siver jewlry, maybe a nice fine silver chain necklace. I would suggest useing a light makeup foundation to achieve the Elven complexion, and no pointy ears.:)

skin - get pale. probably the paler the better.

hair - long, black, braided.

eyes - gray & starlit

costume - simple-cut, unadorned gray (possibly sleeveless?) gown, probably silk or another fancy fabric; belt of silver leaves; headpiece of silver lace & white gems.

"look" - queenly, knowledgeable, thoughtful

for more, go to FotR p.243

i seem to remember an excerpt from Letters saying elves DID have pointed ears - knowledgeable people, would you care to enlighten us?

if you're doing arwen i'd agree with the no points (or not big vulcan ears) or do hair over them - she's mentioned for her hair, not ears.

i have to admit because of the parties i'm going to (& becaues i can hehehe) i've been wearing pointy ears for the past 5 days...

haha...my little brother made this mask at art class, which has blond hair and pointy ears. It doesn't REALLY look like an elf, but close enough. He actually was going to be something else as of half an hour ago. I came home from school and literally insisted that he dress up as an elf tonight...he is! (I'm not going...biology quarter exam tomorrow...blech.)

I know the letter you are thinking of. Tolkien was addressing American artists for the Hobbit, and was giving them a guide for Bilbo. He told them that he imagined the ears of Hobbits slightly pointed and 'well, Elvish'. But it would be silly for Tolkien to assume the artists knew what his Elves looked like. All other Elves pretty much had pointed ears, Shakespeare's Elves did and I believe those of Celtic Mythology did as well. All these are called 'Elves' (not Elfs), and should have been known to them. Tolkien was thus not talking about his own Elves.

There is a passage in the Etymologies in The Lost Road (in the History of Middle-earth Series) which explicitly states that the Qendi had pointed ears, or that their ears were leaf-shaped and more pointed than that of Men. But these were the Elves of the older mythology: The Book of Lost Tales, not The Silmarillion. In the new mythology the strong implication is that Elves do not have pointed ears, and that the chief difference is in the faces, the eyes and the voices. Tolkien even said in a letter that Elves and Men are biologically the same.

Lol ok so im a freek.

after reading the other haloween costume post i went to my room and made a costume. (but of corse no trick or treating)

I put on two belts: one was like a reguler belt, the other was loose and slung high over one hip and low under the other

for a sword: my littel wooden one stuck thrugh the loose belt (on the low side of it)

for a cloak: I took a white towl and some white floss. then i tyed the towl ends together and had a really nice cloak.

it looked really good! I'm not kidding! the towl looked really nice and at the top the loose bit in the back hung down like a hood. and the two belts added a tuch of coolness.

you might not think so but it really did look nice!

P.S. I was supost to be an elf but i didn't have any pointy ear thingys.:( oh well.

the dress is blue and sort of country looking... i could wear one of those long sleaved lacy shirts underneith it and it would look sort of princessy.. and then i think i'd have my hair half up with little braids that meet in back and then form a ponytail... if you guys can visualize that... and then some kind of flowers or glitter or both.... and look for elf ears early! i know they exist somewhere but looking 2 hours before i planned to be dressed up and downtown was probably not the best plan.

arynetrek
11-06-2001, 02:35 AM
you can find them at theater-makeup & costume shops, i've seen them at magic shops also. if you're going to do them, get liquid latex to blend the edges into your skin (makeup people will give you much better instructions than i can) & good-quality makeup - latex doesn't match anyone's skin tone, again for better blending.

hope this helps.

as for Strider with wings, i too would have laughed no matter who said that. but i just can't see him with bat wings - he'd have blackish feathered wings.

of course with tolkien's idea of black=evil dark=OK this would be, um, interesting...
