in the trailer it seems to me that gandalf came off as a punk.
the part i am refering to is where he is terrified mumbling " is it safe, is it safe?"

i've got a hard time seeing gandalf so wimpy

This did not come across as wimpy to me. Desperate is more like it.

yes your term is more appropriate.

but it still stings of an ungandalfishness ( i think i just coined a word) :)

That part of the trailer kinda wigged me out too. Something about Gandalf didn't seem quite right. It could be the fact that he didn't look as composed as I usually picture him: more in control, like nothing could phase him or cause him to behave (as Ringbearer pointed out) so desperate....except maybe the fear that the ring might be lost!!! Wow! I think I can now live with that image of a haggard Gandalf. (I think we need a light bulb icon. ;))

Oh one more thing...it should be interesting to see that scene in it's full context. I want to know how his hair gets so messed up.

It was the Farewell Party, obviously. Gandalf had a bit too much to drink and had been up all night. He finally conked out at 6:00 in the morning (in the wine cellar) and had bad dreams about bad men taking Frodo to Bad Land and doing bad things to him in a bad way. So he woke up (it being then midnight), stumbled out the side door, came in the front, gave Frodo a wild look and yelled: 'Is it safe?! Frodo! Tell me it's safe!!'

After which he soiled himself.

Hey I know! It's that rafter he ran into, maybe it did more damage then we think! Actually I think Gandalf worrying about the Ring adds up to some suspense. After all why should this Wizard be worried about a RING. Either he wants it or he is worried. But WHY is the big question. If he wants it WHY unless it has some hidden power? and if not WHY would he be worried about it unless it was an evil thing? I think it makes sense.

Gandalf's sole reason for being on Middle Earth is "to contest the power of Sauron"...So, if the Ring is "not safe"...meaning, taken by the Enemy, his mission has failed! If I were Gandalf(Olorin), I would not want to return to Valinor in defeat!

perhaps a new change in the plot? Gandalf gives up his wizardly ways to start a middle-earth punk band, "the gandalfs"? Maybe.. mexican punk, or korean rap?.. "the gandalfs go platinum"? Hmmmmmm.
