Would you do it?

Though this won't apply to me for a long time, I've considered the idea for sure. I've always thought Eowyn would be a really nice name. Tinuviel has a nice ring to it too... probably as a middle name though.

And you?

I would consider it, especially for a middle name. I might even look through the appendices to make up a girl's "___wen" name. Eowyn would be pretty though. Don't think I could use anything as obviuos as Frodo or Bilbo though, even for a middle name:)

Finduilas (and old name Faivlirin or something), Elanor, Morwen, Yavanna, Elbereth

Faelivrin. That is the name Gwindor gave to her.

I've said before, my niece's name is Laurelin. I think it is a beautiful name. However, I am not sure about too many names in the books. They are really different. I mean, you pick names for your kids that are comman or kind of unpopuliar, and they still hate their name. I think it can be an iffy thing. I think Arwen is pretty, Laurelin, how about Rose?:) I see names for females are more acceptable from the books. Even the cool guy names would still be kind of strange outside of the story except for Sam, Bill, Michael, and even Merry.

I might name a daughter Elanor. Since it sounds like "Eleanor", only LOTR fans will understand the reference. Everyone else will just think that I can't spell. :)

I'm naming my first girl Lorien. Hopefully my wife will agree, because that's what I'm naming her. The end.

Lorien isn't too bad. The kids at school can call her "Lori" for short.

The only LOTR names I would consider using are Sam and Bill, or maybe Shelob (just kidding on that last one).

I think it is cool. It's only a middle name, my second one actually. It really confuses my teachers when they ask me to write my full name too.

One kid even calls me Mithrandir instead of my first name.

I think it is sindarin for Grey Pilgrim :)

And it's name is Epyon
10-10-2001, 05:58 PM
Yep, it was sindarian (sp?) for grey pilgrim.

Gandalf would probably fit if it had been my middle name instead of Mithrandir, but it doesn't sound right to me since it isn't my middle name. So..... :

i'd also probably give my kids (if i ever have any, which is doubtful) after LotR characters, but like a lot of you have said, for middle names with a more "normal" first name (or vice versa). also, nearly all my favorite names in the books belong to characters whose fate i would not wish on a child - Feanor, for example...

but it'd be funny in a sick sort of way to have siblings Finwe, Feanor, Finrod, etc. etc.... at family reunions no one but Tolkien fans would even attempt to yell at them all at once!

aryne *

PS - i'm back. for awhile at least.

Nobody for "Sauron" or "Morgoth" so far, eh?

I know!!! I know!!!....Thror!:p. I really like Elanor. Peregrin would be a good middle name and Merry would be a good first name, Samwise has a ring to it and so does Beren, I also like Faramir for a middle name, there are lots more but my brain is running on low.
Sam
Ps. My first name is that of a queen(one of King Davids to be exact) and a first lady.

I would seriously name at least one of my kids either Eowyn or Arwen

IronParrot
10-19-2001, 08:56 PM
Agreed.

Maybe we should discuss what names from LOTR you would give to your pets.

Or your electronic devices. (I think I started a thread like that ages and ages ago)

I have an enormous long-haired tri-coloured English guinea pig named Fredegar Bolger, as someone found out a while ago when they asked who he was. I had another cavy named Bilbo (it was smaller, a bit chubby and all white), but when we found out it was a girl (contrary to what we were told) it became Belba (I think she was an aunt of Bilbo's). We almost named one of our dogs Strider, he's a big, furry, black golden-retriever (believe it or not). I'm glad we didn't, he turned out to be a real goof-ball.

Wait a minute, did you say electronic devices?

IronParrot

Yes.

My two calculators are Glamdring and Anduril, and my computer is Shadowfax (though quite honestly it's been running REALLY slow lately)

galadriel
10-21-2001, 07:05 PM
When I was eight I wanted to name my hamster Frodo. But my brother wanted a different name, so we merged the two names together. I can't remember for my life what the poor thing's name was anymore.

I have a porcelain dog on my nightstand named Huan, and a cool-looking wizard necklace named Saruman. (He looks way too evil to be Gandalf.)

You've named your calculators? That's cool, although incredibly weird. No more weirder than me naming my necklace, I suppose. :p

Elessar_elfstone
10-23-2001, 09:35 AM
Hmmm,
I from an Asian country so I don't think there are any names really suitable

But I wouldn't mind some names like
- Eomer
- Theoden (sounds rather acceptable)
- Turin/Tuor (umm... )
- Hurin/Huor

At my house, we name some of our cabinets and closets, because it is easier to refer to them that way. ("Ingrid" instead of "the sewing room closet") However, we have none named after LOTR characters.

There are several names from LOTR that I like, but I don't know if I would give them to my children. I might consider Samwise, but I wouldn't want to shorten it to Sam, and Samwise might sound odd for a child's name. (Can you imagine four-year-old Samwise going to preschool?) I like Drogo too, but probably not for a kid. Lorien and Elanor are pretty, but I don't know if I would like them enough to give my child one of those names.

My mom loves lotr names, but she didn't actually use them to name us. I do have a sister named Carillion Elaine. She was going to name me Catherine Evanna, but I was born male. Fortunately, she let my Dad have some say so; otherwise I would have been called something like Gilgalad or Gondor.

I named my calculator "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", and even got the label for it, along with the label "Don't Panic". I got some funny looks for it, but noone really looks at people's calculators. Bilbo would be a fun name for a dog, probably a small dog. As far as kids go, maybe they might forgive me for middle names like Fili and Kili, wait, that means twelve kids, nevermind that one.

I'm changing my cat's name to Sauron. In remembrance and honor of poor mice brought under the power of the "one claw..."
Meriadoc would be great, even better when shortened to Merry.

seriously????
well, I would love to have a LOTR middle name or something, and it's a really cool idea to name pets and objects after the characters. I like it :)

...but I think giving a first name that is obviously from LOTR to a child is not a good thing. I mean, I know (well, sort of know:)) a girl online called Arwen. I don't think she likes it much, she hasn't reaad the books (like so many she quit after the first few chapters  ) and people keep asking her if that is her real name, etc, etc... I mean, you should see her description of herself, it had something like "yes, Arwen is my real name. Yes, my dad was and still is a Tolkien fanatic. No, I haven't read the books..." in it :)

<grins> but as I don't have a middle name, maybe I can call myself Shani Arwen or something :) it's just not fair to give someone a name like that when you don't even know if they'll like Tolkien or not ;)

I know a guy name Bo Baggett. His mom named him Bo in honor of Bilbo Baggins. :) And he is actually a LOTR fan.
I also have a small dog named Bilbo. He is a tough little stray that turned up on our doorstep. It has been an appropriate name for him. He's always ready to take on anything and he has more than an ordinary share of luck too. :)
I think LOTR middle names for children are a neat idea. I've thought that Estel would be a pretty name for a girl. (Yes, I know it's Aragorn's name but a girl could be called that too.) My brother says when he has a daughter he's going to call her Elen Kalina (starlight.)

I would love to have a LOTR middle name... But my parents haven't read it :) My uncle now, he's obsessed, he's the one who gave me FOTR... and he's got a one-year-old daughter now :).

hmmmmm.... is one year too old to be given a middle name? ;)

I had a beautiful orange long haired cat named Pippin Took. Fit him to a tee, as he was frequently mischievious, like a good meal, and always off on adventures. One adventure nearly cost him his life, as he was hit by a truck, and lost one of his huge green eyes. That never seemed to slow him down though. He continued for many good years, prowling around the fields and forests with his one eye (which glowed eerily at night) Geesh, what a great cat. And, when his time came to pass into the Grey Havens, I shouldn't have been surprised that he was the first cat in the area to succomb to feline AIDS. He was a good boy, and have not had a pet like him since. :)

I've always thought that Meriadoc and Peregrin are the coolest names in LotR. But I don't think my husband would be too thrilled with the prospect of naming our sons that. o_0;; Oh well...

Laurelyn
01-22-2002, 07:42 AM
I really like some of the female names in the book, and most of the male names as well. My alias, aka my screenname, Laurelyn, didn't originate from Tolkien, but when I later read the Silmarillion I realized that it was just Laurelin, spelled differently. I didn't, however, intend that. Actually, Laurelyn isn't my real name. My real name's Laura.
But my little brother's two fish are named Laurelin and Telperion . . .

A lot of cool names there in the book, I must agree. Although there are a few that get weird once you start making up nicknames:

Mithrandir ->Randy - this is ok except maybe for Brits
Gandalf----->Gandi - :rolleyes:

Legolas----->Lassie (ok, but opposite sex) or Lego - "Hey didn't I tell you to clean up your Lego's Lego?"

I think I'll name my future son Saruman a.k.a. Sharky:cool:

I like the name Elanor, and I've liked Sam even before I read LOTR. But, I wouldn't name by kid anything like Arwen or Mithrandir, even though they are more interesting than Mary and John. My kids (if I have any in the DISTANT future) would hate me :D

I love the Quenya and Sindarin languages and would love to name my kids something beautiful. There are such delicate sounds and poetic meanings in the names. Just have to convince my hubby!

I have a fondness for Estel as a middle name. Love the idea of "hope" - something we all need at various times in life.

I'd like my kids to have long winded titles like Aragorn did.

That be pretty funny if he had to announce that wherever he went.

Gildor
01-26-2002, 01:18 PM
I agree, Uinen, Estel would make a great middle name. In English it seems that we are short of iambic names and they work well with most surnames, especially if the first name is trochaic. I looked and looked for those second syllable accented names when I was naming my own Children and settled on Elaine, Elisha, and Elizabeth. Their third names however ( I like lots of names, ok?) were rather more down to earth (lots of family names to carry on) Now that I think of it, Elizabeth could have been Estel...well Estelle maybe...

Other names I wouldn't mind naming children are:
Rian, Arien,(from the Silmarillion) and Lorien. Unfortunately, my children are too old to name...maybe grandchildren. If I start plotting now maybe I can infuse the idea into the right brains.

i like the star names! and you don't have any worries about naming your child after a character with an unfortunate fate. if you called your kid denethor, i bet he'd be an arsonist... ok that was a pretty tasteless joke ;)

i like alcarinque "the glorious", elemmire "star jewel", sorunume, helluin, wilwarin "butterfly" and anarrima.

pretty, eternal names. :D

You sure have to consider how the kid would feel with a name out of Lord of the Rings, especially if it were Mithrandir or Denethor or, clutch the pearls, Bilbo! Can you imagine the little kid's peers getting hold of a name like Frodo or Bilbo or Ghan-buri-Ghan??

However, there are a couple of names one could use and not be ridiculed, such as Elanor or Sam or Bill. ;) It's tough on a kid having a name which is easy to ridicule, I'd hate to make life harder. Sort of like "A Boy Named Sue".

However, considering how I feel about children at this advanced age, I'd probably coin the example of a previous poster and call 'em Grishnakh Ugluk or Snaga Shagrat.

luinilwen
02-06-2002, 09:27 PM
i agree with bropous, and in agreement with earlier posts, i'd have to say that if you WERE going to give your child a name from LOTR or tolkien, perhaps it would be best to make it their middle name(s)! :)

problem is, i don't like any boring names that children wouldn't be ridiculed for. two other favourite names of mine are valida and antianara - amazonian queen and warrior. so tolkienian or no, my kids will hate their names :D

FrodoFriend
02-07-2002, 01:00 AM
But a lot of the names are really pretty. Dwarf names would be almost as bad as Orc names though. Still, not all would sound too odd:

Merry & Pippin are both very nice
Eowyn
Lobelia
Galadriel
Estel

Really, I would love to have a name like that. At least it's not your every day Tom and Bob.

Anyway...as for LotR names...I like Elanor...and I like Pippin...but probably only for a nickname!!! Depends on if he is gonna be a trouble maker or not!!!

A thought just struck me... one day our kids (probably all named Denethor, Arwen, Eowyn, Frodo, Aragorn and such) will visit the entmoot-forum which in those days will be famed throughout the world. And they will by chance come upon those old and ancient threads and they will read our posts and they will think: " Drat, is THIS where they got that name!?" and they will curse us root and branch....

I like Peregrin and Meriadoc.

Elvish names are very pretty, but people are such idiots that they'd never be able to pronouce most of them.

I like Elbereth Gilthoniel, and Radagast might be cool.

When I get a laptop I'm going to name it Gil-Galed.

If I get another cat I may name it Tinuviel, Gollum would be a cool name for a salamander.....

I Love the elven names because they sound so pretty! I'm gonna call my kids (if i have any) Sam, Elanor and maybe Arwen but nothing REALLY obvious such as Frodo or Bilbo. Maybe Cirdan is a bit OTT or Glorfindel.
I like words like that especially elvish...now i'm just raving on so ignore anything that doesnt sound normal because i am not. (Here i go again. I am so bored at the mo)

I would certainly consider naming my kids Elvish names. Not so sure what my (future) husband would think though, haha.
I love Galadriel, but I enjoy the Quenyan translations of English names even. My real name translated is "Erunyauve".

You're welcome Ërendil.

Now that I finished UT, I have a new favorite: Emerwen. It's not a welknown Middle-earth name, but just Tolkienish enough.

Menelvagor
03-04-2002, 09:02 PM
How 'bout Maia? That's Tolkeinish and might just save the kid from the death-by-teasing fate a more obvious name would give.

Kyote Fields
03-08-2002, 06:20 PM
All this talk about kids names is stirring up an old conversation that my future-to-be wife and i had a few months back. I want to name my daughter Emerald Fields (yes, after my own middle name) I think it's very poetic and her nickname would be Emmy. However she doesn't like it because it's too easy to "pick on". I can't see her point and my contention is that I've heard kids pick on names like Sue, John and Mike so it really doesn't matter what the kid's named.
Opinions?

P.S. i personally like Luthien now after reading this thread and will approach my love with this idea, but I can tell you the outcome aleady. Can't say I didn't try!;)

If I ever have kids (which is unlikely as I don't plan on ever marrying), I want to name my first girl Elanor Hope and I want my first boy to have the middle name of Estel (not sure what's gonna go with that.)

Earniel
03-09-2002, 05:02 AM
If children want to "pick on" a name they don't even need a special name. My name is as common as muck and they teased me by refering constantly to the largest desert of africa. Although special names are perhaps more inviting to pick on.

To Jedipati: You can always plan on adopting one or two...

Yeah, I think its nice to be called a name you picked out/chose yourself. Some cultures dont name their children until the child does or chooses something themselves.

I think Samwise would make a cool middle name and my friend Willis thinks Glóin would make a nice first name  . He named some one in the story we're writing together that. He was some one's kid. I let him name him because he invented the kid's dad.

Elessar would make an ausome name now that I think of it. My son would hate me though... You could name your kid TOm and not tell him you expect him to turn out like Bombadil!

Coming to it, my middle name is Rose and my brother's name is Tom, and my mum is a HUGE LotR fan... she says she named him after Tom Seleck (I know I didn't spell that right!) and me because my cheeks were all red when I was born, but I duuno know! I'll have to ask her later.

of course I'd like to give them Tolkien names, but I'm sure that won't go over well with other influential family members. Among the better names I've picked out Beren, Samwise (I've always liked the name Sam, but not Samuel), Eowyn (she frickin' rocks my world).

it would suck to be named Elrond Hubbard. Really.

Maybe a better way of saying it would not be that the child is named after the character, but that the name is a nice one, and so a nice one to name one's child.
My husband was named after an author with an unusual spelling of a common name, and he always disliked it.
Hmm, that Eleven is pretty tacky!

Although while I'm on the subject, I totally plan to name my daughter Varda. Such a cool name, and most people won't realise it's from the book anyway, because most of the people I mix with haven't read the Silmarillion. Therefore should save theoretical child much embarassment. I hope, anyway.

So, who's gonna name their son Gondor?

I have a friend whose name is Theodin, and his siblings names are Galadriel, Elrond, and Arwen. He has a niece named Lorien, too I think.

I hadn't planned on naming any of my children after Tolkein characters. (I have a hard time finding girls names I like for some reason.) But strange names aren't different for me.
If I have twin boys I'm naming them Jaken and Boaz after the pillars in the temple. If I had two sets of twin boys, I'd name the second pair Aragorn and Legolas. :D That would be cute. I like the name Estel, too, but I would probably use that for a girl.

I think I'll create an elvish name that means something cool but sounds plausible.

getting back to the subject, if I WERE to name my kids after LotR characters - very hypothetical cos I wouldn't remotely consider that for real:

The eldest would be Eowyn - confident, smart and quite a temper
The middle would be Arwen - very elven in her ways
The youngest would be a female manifestation of Sauron!

I think it would be great to have kids with names starting with "Fin". People would say when we're coming over "Hey, the fins are here!"

Yeah, you could have seven sons and name them all with fin names. Wait, even Feanor didn't do that!

Here's some pointless info (which I'm guessin u already knew) for you guys-
Arwen means 'lady'.

That's actually quite confusing. Arwen is called Arwen Undomiel, but also Lady Undomiel. Obviously. But does that mean Arwen is just a title? And if so, why does everyone call her by it?
And if Arwen is actually her name- huh? Was Elrond just feeling really, really unimaginative that day.
"Hmm, I have a daughter. What shall I call her? Girl?
Nah, not sophisticated enough. Daughter? That way everyone will know she's related to me..."

And Sauron I'm guessin comes from 'Saura', which means foul or putrid. Sure your hypothetical daughter will love you for that one!

Please don't do any sarky posts telling me all this stuff is in the Silmarillion or something, cos I haven't read it. And I don't care in any case. I find this fascinating.

Well, maybe I wouldn't go that far, but it's mildly interesting at least. What else could you name a child?

Melyanna looks quite nice, actually. It means 'dear gift'. Unfortunately, by the time I'm old enough 2 have kids, I don't think I'll be thinking of them in that way. Maybe 'burden' would be more appropriate.
D*mn, stupid online dictionary doesn't have that. Oh well. My
imaginary child is safe for now.

Root THUS- appears in "Etymologies", under which find "foul, putrid" related words; but Tolkien decided that Sauron derives from root THAW ("detestable, abhorrent"). In any event not the best name by meaning :)

Well, if we're just going on sound alone (since I can't be bothered to look up the meanings of any of these names because I am lazy and D*MN proud of it), I've always liked (for girls) Nessa, or Luthien, and I LOVE Varda (don't know why...). Though, if we're going on meaning, I like Nenwen (Roughly 'Water Maiden') and Loslom (I'm guessing, from my Sil Appendix, roughly 'Snow Echo'? Please correct me with the proper meaning if I'm wrong). But, if I ever DID have kids (which I won't, the world's overpopulated as it is), I would like a girl to name Zephyr (synonomous with 'light wind' in English; the name of the West Wind in Angient Greek Mythology). I don't know why...

Whether the world is overpopulated is a controversial subject, not agreed on even by the Wise -- do not believe everything you read.

You could adopt them. Don't eliminate possibilities until you get there.

I second that. Look at the extinctions we are causing. Look at the pollution. It's not just something we anti-kid people make up you know! And why is it that whenever we speak up about not wanting kids that we are patronised and told that we don't know what we're talking about? And why are we called selfish for not wanting kids? How is it selfish to not produce another carbon unit to add pollution to the world? Look around. Look at all the refugees and orphanages. Something is deeply wrong with our society if we're actively encouraged to ignore the parent-less kids out there, and produce our own brats. If I ever have kids - and I don't plan on it - I'm definately adopting a refugee!

Well spoken! I was, as usual, too lazy to make such an argument. . .but what you say is very true. I, too, if I ever were to decide to raise a child, would adopt a kid who would needs a home. And maybe burden said child with the name of a fictional character ;)

And yeah, I think I'd burden it with nice name as well. But I don't think I'd go for existing characters. My friend is fluent in Quenya, and I'd just get her to come up with some cool name which has significant meaning for me.

I agree with you. I have 2 bio kids and 2 adopted,. and they are not named Elanor and Eomer, more's the pity, they came with their own names. I wasn't saying you should have kids instead of adopting, I was just saying it's nice to have kids. To read the LotR to them.

There's nothing wrong with not wanting kids. But there's nothing wrong with wanting kids either. Maternal instincts are hard to ignore.
