View Full Version : Your LOTR mate

For guys and gals
from LOTR who would you choose as your significant other
It's a toss between arwen and eowyn, but i'd choose the latter.
Arwen's a bit of a homebody. I'm a bit of an adventurer and I would like a mate of similar interest.
Besides after the LOTR she was a healer.
so i've have some to hug and hold
AND
someone who would be a comrade in arms

Probably Glorfindel, or Gildor. I think most likely Gildor though. I liked his personality.
Selwythe

Ahem, I am afraid there are only 3 female characters in LoTR, unless I choose marry Rosie Cotton, who's half my height. Or maybe I can add Shelob to the equation?
I think I will choose from Silmarillion, and that'd be Idril (Elbereth's taken :( )
But if I have to choose from LoTR, easy, Galadriel. Beauty and wisdom. Anti-establishment (didn't care about the West) and a fetish for Dwarves.
:)

Faramir. :D And no, I won't say why. ;)

i agree on faramir
Ñólendil
10-05-2001, 07:20 PM
There's many more females than that Selwythe! There's just not a whole lot of very important female characters. Anyway I'd choose Ioreth.
I think I will choose from Silmarillion, and that'd be Idril (Elbereth's taken :( )
So is Idril!
galadriel
10-05-2001, 11:26 PM
I also really like Faramir. Great personality, a total hottie <according to my imagination, anyway>. It'd have to be pre-Eowyn, of course.

Selwythe's choice made me recall something
I think in unfinished tales or book of lost tales
there is SOMETHING about galadriel being "athletic" in her youth
or competing in physical skill against feanor or her brothers MAYBE?
if someone could verify that for me then i'd change to galadriel.
i'm 6' 2" it would interesting to date someone taller than I.
plus the beauty, wisdom, power, "magic", athletics goin' on

Unfinished Tales: "She grew to be tall beyond the measures even of the women of the Noldor, she was strong of body, mind, and will, a match for both the loremasters and the athletes of the Eldar in the days of their youth." (UT The History of Galadriel and Celeborn)

One of the few times I watched Oprah (in some time of dark despair, no doubt), it was about a blind date. A little person (about three feet tall or thereabouts) had been set up with a man over seven feet tall. They hit it off quite well, and actually fell in love.
I wouldn't know about Elijah Wood, but according to Gandalf Frodo was 'fairer than most [hobbits]'.

Call me stupid...but who are Aegnor and Andreth? (That's going to bug me all day now...I have no clue who they are!) Aegnor is the brother of Finrod Felagund who are the brothers of Galadriel. If you have not read the Silmarillion, This is where you will find these two charming fellows. Andreth was a mortal woman that was in love with Aegnor who was a Noldorin prince. This story is located in Vol. 10 of the Histories of Middle-earth. It is called Morgoth's Ring (Athrabeth Finrod Ah Andreth.)

mithrellas was a companion of nimrodel the love of Amroth the Lord of Lorien before Galadriel. he was the founder of Dol Amroth.
Mithrellas fled lorien when the balrog rose in moria.
she bore two children with imrazor, galador and gilsmith
galador is mentioned in UT pg 248 and 316
gilsmith UT 248
when imrahil is speaking of his elven ancestory in LOTR these are

The issue is that in some cases, offspring from Elf/Man marriages were given a choice by the Valar. That is if the Valar thought the issue to be important enough.
When it comes to Aragorn I think his choice was made by Elros ages before. Arwen had to choose mortality when she choose Aragorn.
In other cases no such choice was given and the offspring would be mortals, like in the case of Imrazor and Mithrellas. I think it is said someplace there might have been other cases similar to theirs.

BTW I wonder if there were ever any mixed Hobbit/Man marriages/offspring? I think it is untold of, but should be fully possible as both are branches of Men. However, I think it says of Bree where such a union would be the likeliest, that the Hobbits and Men lived side by side, not together.

Blond hobbits are rare, but it doesn't mean they don't exist. Can anyone prove that Frodo isn't blond? Or red-haired, say? And why couldn't he have blue/green/grey eyes? The book doesn't really say anything about his looks.
P.S. In the movie, EVERYONE has either blue or green eyes.
P.P.S. It seems that many of those who picked Frodo are influenced by Elijah's angelic baby-face. Not that it's wrong, of course; but it's funny.

I actually couldn't make out the color of Bloom's eyes in the movie, they seemed either brown or green. So I'm not sure if they gave him contacts or not. But as there are quite a few things in the movie that aren't consistent with the books, I assume they could just have an elf with brown eyes.

I honestly believe that if elves existed today they would resemble something a geek, only more physical.
I assume you wanted to say "something like a geek"
However, I do not know what the image of geek is to you.
I think of homely, poor fashion, couch potatoes.
But, I beg to differ. I think they would be more along the lines of refined and cultured ballerinas.
But to be honest, there are only three choices for the straight guys as a mate in LotR: Arwen, Eowyn, and Galadriel. Goldberry's taken.
They are ALL taken.
But we still can dream on.

I gotta agree with you there, afro-elf. I've always had a "thing" about Liv Tyler's looks too, and it ain't positive. Now don't get me wrong, I think she did a good job in the role as written, but the girl just don't get my blood a pumping, if'n ya knows what I means...
Only girls in the film I thought were all that "hot" were Rosie Cotton and a couple of the Hobbit-lasses who "oooohed" and "aaahed" over Gandalf's fireworks at the Birthday Party. I have a feeling they were just local Wellington girls but they had really beautiful smiles....and no, Kate Blanchett don't do it for me either...though she did a good job as Galadriel and as the narrator...

I missed the movie while in Thailand. The there was a midnight showing but my plane left at 3:00. I hope it is still playing there when I go back in about 5 weeks. ( one of the few good things about this damn country is I get decent vacations)
Anyway, the point being is that I'll have to wait see if there is anyone in the movie to whom I can fawn over.
Did they show any other Elven women besides Galadriel and Arwen?

Actually, afro-elf, they DO show other Elven women besides Arwen and Galadriel, but mostly only in "long shots" so you don't get a real good look at 'em.

Hell, I'm starved for the sight of ANY woman. I see more on Tusken Raider and Jawa women.
The saving grace is that I get a little over 3 months vacation ( two of which are paid) spread over the year, which with I can escape.
After being many places, I went to Thailand for Ramadan break and it seems to be the remedy to my Far Harad blues.
Heading there again in about 5 weeks.
I find living here has completely and utterly destroyed any respect I may have for Islam and soured me on many things aside from just that.
Why I do I stay? I wanna go back to school and I wanna save enough so I don't have to work while I study( as I teacher, I NOW truly understand the commitment needed to be a student) and I wanna set aside enough for anothers BS and a another MS.
I wanna leave the liberal arts behind and move into science, which means I REALLY have to buckle down. There is tad room for BOVINE DEFICATION in science. Quite unlike my current degrees.

Menelvagor
01-11-2002, 11:00 PM
Silmarien was was the daughter and oldest child of one of the early Numenorian Kings (not sure which). She was passed over for Queen (even though Tar-Ancalime had become a queen earlier, and it had been established that the eldest child, male or female, would take the crown), but her childeren were the begining of the line of Isuldur. I actually don't know much about her, just what it says in the appendix, but I think she's in the Silmarillion. (I haven't read it, but I would assume...)
-Menelvagor:)

What I meant was, the question was what LOTR character would be your mate. Silmaren is not in the story of the LOTR. BUT she is in the book per se. Albeit in the appendix. So, I was just saying that you could choose her on a technicality.
Menelvagor

When I made that last post, I was responding to Wayfarer. A hearty "Welcome to the Moot" to you both, Menelvagor and Mrs Legolas!
I agree that any lady who can stick it to the Witch King of Angmar and live is a girl after me own heart...especially if she looks like the actress who plays her in Peter Jackson's The Two Towers, from what I can tell from the back of the paperback...
And can someone take a look at the paperback and let me know, if you are familiar with the actor, is the guy who looks like he is going to be playing Theoden the fellow who plays "Father Jack" on "Father Ted"? Sure looks like him...

Hmmm....if memory serves me correctly, Kamyel, from left-to-right, the photos are of:
1. A fellow in a helm with a prominent noseguard, whom I take to be Eomer;
2. A fellow with dark armor, greying hair and short, greying beard, whom I take to be Theoden; and
3. A beautiful, grave blond woman whom I take to be Eowyn.
I'm hoping my memory is serving correctly from looking at the "film series" printing of the LotR paperbacks and quality paperbacks at the bookstore.

At first, I thought of Luthien or Arwen, but realized that I'd probably spend most of our time together saying, "Gee, honey, you're SO beautiful!" I think our marriage would last 3, 4 months, TOPS!
So I'd have to pick Goldberry. She reminds me of what we used to call a "Hippie Chick." I can just see her in a peasant blouse and floor length cotton dress, baking something or other (with honey) by candlelight....(sigh)...and I'd walk into the kitchen and say, "Gee, Goldberry, you're SO beautiful!"

but I realize that she is a high maintence broad so I think that goldberry would be the choice
she is a low maintence maia.
I imagine that her greatest pleasure is pleasing her mate. so by making you happy she derives pleasure and because you are happy because of what she does it increase sher happiness so its a BEAUTIFUL CYCLE OF BLISS
Imagine something like this
Me:
"Lets just stay in bed for an age or so and cuddle and read LOTR, HOB, SIL,etc.."
Her:
she kisses me and says "Sure!"
Me:
