If I may be so bold as to ask......

I am writing a fantasy/seastory novel that takes place in the 19th century. The main character and his father BOTH take part in wars. The main character during the major part of the novel is 40
. This would be the year 1850 (thought that may change). I would like him to have fought in a war in the 1830's or so. He lives in Nantucket. What could he have fought in?

His father also takes part in a war. This would be at an earlier date.

Any ideas? Wars between the late 1700's to 1840?

Is this guy American or what?

War of 1812 comes to mind.

In the 1840s they had the Mexican War, and there were always constant Indian clashes.

Well Ben pretty much summed it up....there just wasn't too many wars going on in that time period. You should either pick a different time period or invent a war for the book.

// looks in his Timechart of Military History

1832: Black Hawk Indian War

1835-6: Texan War of Independence

1836 was the Alamo, but obviously your character wouldn't have survived that

1835-43: 2nd Seminole Indian War

Assuming about a thirty-year difference in age between father and son, it's a distinct possibility his father (should he have come from Europe) could have been involved in the French Revolutionary Wars or the early stages of the Napoleonic Wars.

Don't forget about the American Revolution if you want to go back even further.

The father character August is actually Scottish. He was not born in Scotland however, just had a Scottish king as an ancestor. :)
