Although, I kind of consider(as many others) The Hobbit to be a prelude to LotR. If I had to seperate them, my vote is cast for The Lord of the Rings.

Though they're very different books, Hobbit being a childrens' book, LOTR being, well, itself, undescribable, my vote goes to LOTR, of course, but then, who would vote against it? (ok that sentance sucked)

There was an old Michael Martinez essay about how nothing is quite like LOTR. I have to say LOTR is better, but the Sil is the best of all!

agree with Fin: LOTR, but if the SIL is put in the list of choices, I'd go for SIL.

Sorry but i have to dissagree with you, maybe it's the child in me but i think the hobbit has to be the best book of all of them. Still ive only read LOTR once so there's still time to change my mind:D

My favorite is the Silmarillion, and then LOTRs, but would there have been either one of them without the Hobbit? Afterall, it was the inspiration for the entire myth.

The Sil is for geneology. LOTR is for the adventure. The one and only H is for introduction to the marvelous world we all enjoy. My voite is for the Hobbit for exactly that reason.

I assume, from the wording this is a vote for LOTR, since the Sil was not part of the original poll.
The only thing I liked about The Silmarillion(probably because I had read the Hobbit and LOTR many times and many years before) was the historical facts that I always wondered about.
I could not connect with any of the characters. There was "hardly any" dialog. It seemed more like a history book, than an adventure. I'm sure if JRR had done the work and final editing, it would have been ten times better! I know there are alot of posters who disagree, but the"feeling" is just not there for me. I guess it is possible that the reason I do not cherish it, like so many others, is the fact that I rushed out to buy The Silmarillion, when it was first released, with so much anticipation for a story
like LOTR...I was mistaken. Perhaps I would have enjoyed it much more had they all been available when I first started reading Tolkien.

You are correct ringbearer. My vote is for LOTRs. If the silmarillion were in this poll though, it would be my pick. And just as you did, I read LOTRs many times before the Sil. came out, and yes it does not have the adventure of LOTRs, but it does have glorious battles, and great nobility. It is a beautiful story IMHO.

The Sil is totally different from the others. LOTR and The Hobbit cover only a few years, while Sil covers thousands, or maybe millions. It is story of armies, not of individuals, mostly.

I think it is a tale of individuals though. It is a tale of armies and enemies as well. It is the inner-twining of the individuals and the battles that revolve around them that makes it great. How each is effected by the rebelion of the Noldor. How those that were not involved are drawn into their doom. The unity of Elves and Men in a comman goal against the enemy, and the betrayels. Love stories of great sadness, And histories leading to LOTRs and the third age. Great glory, great sadness, great love stories of devotion and sacrifice. Everthing a good book should be.
