Mine is "The King of the Golden Hall"...it is so cool how Gandalf(showing his true power!) "awakens" Theoden and puts Grima Wormtongue in his place!

It would have to be "Three is Company" (FOTR) I love it when Frodo and the guys meet Gildor. It is funny. I also like the entire conversation between Gildor and Frodo, It is the first time the reader is really exposed to the High Elves. I found Gildor to be a very wise person in his answers to Frodo's questions.

Yes! That is also, cool! Sam's reaction to his first encounter with Elves is "priceless"!

How about Frodo's reaction in A Conspiracy Unmasked? Now that is funny.

One of my favorite chapters is The Grey Havens. It really is quite moving when Frodo leaves Sam, Merry and Pippin, but I always liked how it ended with them singing as they got closer to the shire.

It's impossible for me to say.It may seem demented and sick but I like all the scenes in Mordor, from Shelobs Lair to Mount Doom, because it shows the love and friendship Sam and his master have. So so touching. I love the scene Frodo makes in Bree, and the bath scene is soooo funny, the scene at Isengard is cute and funny, and I LOVE the part where Sam watches Frodo as he sleeps in Ithillien and then the argument he and Gollum had over the rabbit. Mine is the Siege of Gondor and the Battle of Pelennor Fields. I can't wait to see what the majesty translates to in the movie. Ahem, I can wait till 2003, I suppose.
I also liked the Lothlorien and Council of Elrond chapters.

Mine is without a doubt the moment where Gandalf tells the Witch King to shove off *g*.
Other from that I utterly enjoyed the fight with the Balrog, and of course the Battle in the Helms deep.

I always loved the part when Gandalf, Aragorn, Gimli, And Leagols were going into the Golden Hall for the first time, the door warden wanted them to lay down their weapons and Aragorn won't lay his down. The door warden threatened im by saying something to the effect of(not a direct quote), "Lay it aside unless you would fight all the men in Rohan. " Then Gimli replied, "Not alone!" That's great stuff!

The very end of the Lothlórien chapter is in my opinion the most beautiful part that Tolkien has written
"Here is the heart of Elvendom ," he said, "and here my heart dwells ever, unless there be a light beyond the dark roads that we still must tread, you and I. Come with me!" And taking Frodo's hand in his he left the hill of Cerin Amroth and came there never again as living man.
Just stunnigly beautiful.

CONTAINS SPOILERS (just thought you would like to know before I ruin LotRs for you)
"... Presently he became aware that Frodo was singing softly to himself, singing the old walking song but the words were not quite the same.
Still around the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate
And though I oft have passed them by,
A day will come at last when I
Shall take the hidden paths that run
West of the Moon, East of the Sun.
And as if in answer, from down below, coming up the road out of the valley, voices sang:
A! Elbereth Gilthoniel!
silivren penna miriel
o menel aglar elenath,
Gilthoniel, A! Elbereth!
We still remember, we who dwell
In this far land beneath the trees
The starlight on the Western Seas.
Frodo and Sam halted and sat silent in the soft shadows, until they saw a shimmer as the travellers came towards them..."
Will this suffice?

One of my many favorite parts would have to be the barrow-down scene. It's just so interesting to read, because I tend to build up anxiety and fright as Merry, Sam, Pippin, and finally, Frodo are caputured. While the barrow-wight comes into the room, my eyes are just about glued to the page. And when Frodo shouts for help, I nearly fall off my seat...it's like I'm really there watching. And then, of course, the tidal wave of happiness and relief as Tom Bombadil drives off the wight
I just love these books! :D  :p :)

I like the choices of master Samwise because it makes me cry, and for the same reason i like the battle where pippin nearly dies. I like the grey havens and the scouring of the shire and basically all of the hobbit bits and gollum bits. They make me laugh and cry...i like hobbits.

I haven't a specific favorite moment, but many. It's too hard to narrow down to one, but Frodo & Sam's travel through Mordor is a forever-etched-in-memory happening compared to the rest. Especially the part where they go through the bodies of dead orcs.

I've always enjoyed the sheer dramatic quality of "The Council of Elrond" chapter in FotR.

Couldn't agree more Sam. It is demented and it is sick, but I agree. They are the most touching parts of the book, and I am close to tears (no really, I am) from The Stairs of Cirith Ungol to The Grey Havens where I don't stop crying for about a day. I also like The Battle of Pellanor Fields and The Black Gate Opens

Wow,I'm finding it really difficult to decide on one fave'.-So here's a few..
I would agree with Panther,ALL the stuff about Moria is really well written,it's atmospheric,emotional,fast-paced,exiting and I always look forward to that part of the book.:)
Also the big battles of Helm deep and the Pellanor fields, are just incredable,in description and detail, and always stir the heart.
Finally,I would say that no victory is complete without it's celebrations, and I love the scenes on the field of Cormallen, and of Aragorn's crowning, and wedding.:D
It really is just an amazing tale.......

I don't know if I could specify chapters, but I have three short favorite parts:
Entering Meduseld. When Aragorn, Gandalf, Gimli, and Legolas climb up the shining steps past the still sitting guards with their braided golden hair, set down their weapons, and enter the Golden Hall of the King. The light shining through the windows high above; the dusk and gloom shrouding the tapestry inside; Eorl the Young on his "gallant steed" changing history . . .
Frodo and Sam, coming over the hill to their first view of Mordor: the country which the crawling day now revealed to their shrinking eyes. The slag heaps like the entrails of the mountains belched forth. It's a wonderful description of the filth of Mordor.
A small bit from Bombadil's house. He's telling stories to the hobbits, and they see a vision in their minds of a line of tall men, seed of the kings from over the sea, striding one by one across the fields of time. Grim, determined, steadfast . . . and finally, the last, with a Star on his brow . . .

Mmm, like so many others, The Battle of Pelennor Fields. ALL of Eowyn's fight scene, from the moment 'Dernhelm' is mentioned to when Eomer goes berserk at seeing his sister and rides off all kamikaze-like. But my favorite quote from said section is this:
Then out of the blackness of his mind, he thought that he heard Dernhelm speaking; yet now the voice seemed strange, recalling some other voice he had known.
"Begone, foul dwimmerlaik, lord of carrion! Leave the dead in peace!"
A cold voice answered: "Come not between the Nazgûl and his prey! Or he will not slay thee in thy turn. He will bear thee away to the houses of lamentation, beyond all darkness, where thy flesh shall be devoured, and thy shrivelled mind be left naked to the Lidless Eye."
A sword rand as it was drawn. "Do what you will; but I will hinder it, if I may."
"Hinder me? Thou fool. No living man may hinder me!"
Then Mery heard of all sounds in that hour the strangest. It seemed that Dernhelm laughed, and the clear voice was like the ring of steel. "But no living man am I! You look upon a woman. Éowyn am I, Éomund's daughter. You stand between me and my lord and kin. Begone, if you be not deathless! For living or dark undead, I will smite you, if you touch him."
The winged creature screamed at her, but the Ringwraith made no answer, and was silent, as if in sudden doubt. Very amazement conquered Merry's fear. He opened his eyes and the blackness was lifted from them. There some paces from him sat a great beast, and all seemed dark about it, and above it loomed the Nazgûl Lord like a shadow of despair. A little to the left stood she who he had called Dernhelm. But the helm of her secrecy had fallen from her, and her bright hair, released from its bonds, gleamed with pale gold upon her shoulders. Her eyes grey as the dea were hard and fell, and yet tears were on her cheeks. A sword was in her hand, and she raised her sheild against the horror of her enemy's eyes
Yes, I know its very long, but it seems that it sums up Éowyn's situation: she is bold and unafraid of the shadow of Death before her, and yet, her heart has just gone through great torment (whenever I do a drawing of Éowyn squaring off with the Nazgûl Lord on the Pelennor, I NEVER forget the tears. To me, they're one of the most important details). It shows her desperation, her sorrow, her insane courage, and her readiness to die, all at once. I also like it when Merry first sees 'Dernhelm' and notices the hopeless look on his face. AND...when Éowyn's winter finally passes and she gives up her sword. I honestly bawl when I read that section carefully. It...it's just so...so sad! She's given up her sword! I...I can't take it...I loved the tough-as-nails-can't-touch-me-sympathetic-people-p***-me-off Éowyn so much(yes, that may not be how you see her, but Faramir tells her not to scorn a gentle heart so she must have had something against sympathy)...*sniff*
But off-topic from my freakish Éowyn obsession...Sam's last line, after seeing Frodo off to the Havens, when he's just come home to Rosie and little Elanor. It's just...so...FINAL! And yet, we know the story's not over. I get all misty-eyed (quite a feat for me, icey Bi*** that I am:D) when I realize, once again, that it's OVER!
*sniff**sniff* Excuse me, I think I need a tissue right about now...*stumbles off crying*

Stalker in the Starlight, you described the Eowyn and Merry moments so well that I couldn´t ever do the same, even though that´s exactly what I feel like every time when I read that part! Eowyn´s desperation (is that a word... :) ) is so huge! And when ever I get to the part when Merry sees Eowyn the first time, I have to read those lines through a few times because they are just so beautifully written and desribe so well what Eowyn feels like. And they give also a nice picture how clearly and deeply Merry sees things. I love that part!

Choose a favourite bit?! Impossible!
Well, if I had to... I'd choose:
Of Herbs and Stewed Rabbit - some of the imagery is amazing; the juxtaposition of the flora vs the battle scarred terrain.
A Journey in the Dark, and so forth. This chapter could almost rival Poe!
And I LOVE the companionship built up through the Mordor chapters.
And finally, re-reading the Rivendell chapters with a Silmarillion perspective is just... amazing.

I found the final casting of the ring (along with Gollum) into the heart of Mount Doom very uplifting; a great relief overswept me despite the fact that I knew it would eventually happen. I also loved it when the two hobbits awoke after their rescue by Gandolf, and Sam thought it was all a dream until he looked at Frodo. I was so happy they were alive, and that they had succeeded.
The end of Return of the King was horrible and great for me at the same time. The picture in my mind was serene and beautiful, yet the fact that Frodo, Bilbo, and Gandolf were leaving forever tore at my heart. I did not want them to leave and I cried at their depature. It was like I was standing there on the shore with Pippin, Merry, and Sam, watching my friends sail away, wishing they could stay but knowing they could not.
And then I read the afterward, about what happened after the departure of Gandolf and company. When I came to the spot that said the fellowship is broken, I felt like crying, even though it was just a single sentence along a time line of events. And I felt it again when I reached the part about Arragon's passing.
It seems to me that one of Tolkien's greatest accomplishments, his creation of a world so real that it's hard to believe it is all a fantasy, is a bittersweet thing. It was such a beautifully written epic, and I became so drawn in to it that I was actually pained for it to all end. And even though I know that it was just a story, it still doesn't feel that way.

One of the most dramatic points in LotR for me, personally, would have to have been the discovery of the Book of Mazarbul in the Tomb of Balin, short-lived dwarven king of Moria. Also, the subsequent battle to hold the main door shut while not allowing themselves to become entirely shut in as was the mistake of the dwarves of Balin's company. The east door does Gandalf implore the companions to keep drawn, and through it they escape. The entries in the Book of Mazarbul itself, torn and battered, tell a terrible, melancholic tale of Balin's failed recolonization attempt, setting a mood that struck exceptionally powerful chordic emotions within me. Then again, all of Tolkien's writings seem to have a similar effect on my emotions.
Lastly, anything of Dwarvish concern is right up my ally. Until next we meet again! *ThorinOakenshield*

My favourite?
Anything with Sam and Frodo in Mordor. Particularly Cirith Ungol and Shelob's lair. And after the Ring's destroyed with Gollum - though that "Nine-Fingered Frodo and the Ring of Power" (not precise quote) was just tasteless. I mean, the dude's lost his finger so you say, "Don't worry, soon they'll be telling stories of how you lost your finger and they'll say "Sick!" and "Eww!"' and I'm going on about this stuff again, sorry.
If this post has severely annoyed anyone, well, just ignore me next time.

The Battle of Helm's Deep. It gives me such a thrill when the daylight breaks and the orcs find themselves between Helm's Deep, the White Rider, and a 'forest' that wasn't there the day before.:) The best part is when they decide to take their chances with the Ents and never come out again. HA!
I can't wait to see that on the big screen. Well, I made it this far, so guess I could make it a few more months, but I'M SO EXCITED!

I agree with most of what everyone has already said, but i'll say it again!
Eowyn vs. the Nazgul
When Sam and Frodo get to the house he bought and Merry and Pippin are there, and make him take them along.
When they meet the elves for the first time.
When the hobbits hear the cries of the Nazgul when they are still in the Shire. I think it is written so well, very creepy and good;)
I think my very favourite parts of the book are usually just little bits of dialogue. I love when Eomer threatens Gimli, and Legolas says something along the lines of "you would be dead before your stroke fell" and when Gimli stands up for Aragorn when the guard in Edoras tells him to lay down his weapons. I love the little moments in the book when you see the deep friendship between the members of the fellowship, and you know that they will defend each other to the death. I especially like the friendship between Legolas and Gimli, and the hobbits. It makes me wish i was in the fellowship. I guess that sounds crazy...

*The Fellowship of the Ring:
My favorite chapter is A Journey in the Dark. I really like Moria, and learning about its history. There are so many "nameless" creatures that have never seen day, and chambers underwater that have not been explored since it was inhabited during its prime. Spooky!
My favorite part in the chapter is the encounter with the Balrog.
*The Two Towers:
My favorite chapter is Treebeard. I really like the Ents. They are so interesting!
My favorite part is when the Ents are marching to Isengard.
*The Return of the King:
My favorite chapter is the Siege of Gondor.
My favorite part is when the Lord of Morgul confronts Gandalf.

"a Conspiracy Unmasked" for the sense of comradeship that goes beyond individuals thrown into circumstance together.
"Journey in the Dark" for the sheer excitement and wonder.
"The Mirror of Galadriel" for the odd mixture of magic, comfort, fear, and home sickness all in a single moment of clarity.
"Treebeard" because it weaves the old world and the new while providing a vehicle to give Merry and Pippen more story.
"Of Stewed Rabbit" for it's odd comfort in the midst of the bleakness surrounding. (I liked it enough that I ate rabbit:eek:... once)
"The Battle of the Pellenor Fields" for the best battle.
"Mt. Doom" for the dramatic moment.
"Scouring of the Shire" for the revenge factor.
And all the rest as chapters in my favorite book.:)

I think the bit where Sam thinks Frodo is dead at the end of the 2nd buk is really sad (boo hoo) then Sam carries on without him then the orcs get Frodo!
I think the bit in Mount Doom is good too when Frodo loses his finger and Gollum falls into fire.
