Is this a good edition of LotR?

by J. R. R. Tolkien, Alan Lee (Illustrator) (Hardcover - November 1991) (from Ebay)

I am considering ordering this or the regular hardcover boxed set...any recommendations? They are both by the same publisher

I've got the Illustrated Silmarillion with pictures by Alan Lee, and I love it, so you can't go wrong with the Illustrated LOTR.

If by hard-cover boxed set you mean the Millenium Edition, I'd go with that one (the box set). I think it's the latest edition and all the mistakes are removed and additions and alterations intended by the author incorporated. I don't have the Alan Lee one, but I've seen it, it is indeed beautiful, the book itself and the art. The Millenium edition has it's own beauty too, but no illustrations (which can be viewed as both good and bad). So it depends on what you're looking for.

Thanks...recently found out that the illustrated edition is one large volume...think I'll skip it and go with the boxed set you mentioned or the Easton Press leather bound set I've found. Although the latter costs $241.25 (5 installments)!

Another good set is the 1988 LOR boxed hardcover set. You can get it on Amazon.com for under $50 and it has Great fold out maps and since it is seperated into three books is not as bulky as the illustrated one. Plus it has cover and box illustrarions by Alan lee.
