As my first post on Entmoot, I would like to talk about Heren Hyarmeno (Order of the South), the first official Tolkien Society-affiliated Smial in Latin America. It was founded on 19 March 1989 by Ronald Kyrmse in São Paulo, Brazil (the country where I live). The "Tolkenian society" helped spread the reading of Tolkien's books in the country, and also promoted studies on the Legendarium.

At that time, the Tolkien Society sent the following response to the members of Heren Hyarmeno (which was called Heren Hyarmen initially):

[…] As far as I know, the Heren Hyarmen is the first Smial in Latin America. However, you cannot lay claim to being the first in the Southern Hemisphere as there have been two in Australia over the past 12 years. Both have not survived to this day, so at the moment your smial is the ONLY one in the Southern Hemisphere! […]

Unfortunately, over the years, the Smial lost its strength, becoming a group of friends who meet periodically and no longer a society as it used to be.

Later, Ronald Kyrmse, founder of Heren Hyarmeno, alongside a select group of Tolkeinians, translated the most recent Brazilian editions of Tolkien's books (which was the editions I read Tolkien for the first time).

Welcome to the Entmoot, Tar-Lómendur. :)

I quite like the term Smial for a Tolkien society!
