It's funny, but on the flip side embracing change is the key to dealing with criticism. Have the strength of character to defend that you wrote within your time while admitting that those times had some serious shortcomings.

I remember coming across this gem when I read The Letters of J. R. R. Tolkien in high school. Of course, today you can find it for free online with a little help from Google!

Should settle the anti-semitism argument, at least. Also, I agree with bj. That he had any strong female characters (Eowyn, Galadriel, Melian, etc) at all sets him apart from many writers of his time.
