Unexpected Journey box office performance

The first Hobbit movie is going to rake in a ton of cash this weekend, but how much? Forecasts for the North American box office have ranged from $80 million to $140 million.

A sampling of predictions:

Box Office Guru: $86 million
Box Office Mojo: $94.5 million
Entertainment Weekly: $110 million


So far, we know the movie made an impressive $13 million at midnight last night in the US and Canada. The full Friday figures will be available tomorrow.

The Hobbit opened to an estimated $37.5 million yesterday (http://boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=3586&p=.htm), a new December record! However, it's only a little higher than the $34.5 that Return of the King made, indicating that attendance was lower.
