Robin Hobb's books are excellent! She wrote the Farseer Trilogy (which I can't recommend enough) and The Ship of Magic is the first book in the Liveship Traders Trilogy.

I've read all her books and am constantly fascinated by the depth of characters and the incredible plots she's made..

.. she's also written several novels under the name Megan Lindholm.

If you're curious about her, or want to get to know her style a bit before you check her out (again, I highly recommend that you do), read this article (http://go.borders.com/features/rrrobinhobb.xcv) at borders.com entitled "Escaping Escapism, or Back to Jack and Ella." It offers an insight into some of her character development and her mind.

Those books were recommended to me, and I got them from the library. But because of the other series that I was reading, I never got started on them. Am I missing out on something big?

I've read 'The Farseer Trilogy' it was ace. She's writing a new trilogy, which continues about 15 years after the farseer trilogy and it will be from Fitz's point of view (Yippi ka yeah), its called 'Fool's Errand', coming out in Sep/Oct in the UK, can't wait.

I have'nt yet read The liveship trilogy, but probably will after my exams.
