I see that Toy Story 3 got good reviews, which led me to wonder about other ____ IIIs.
There are some sequels that are as good or better than the original- Godfather II; Aliens- but the third in those series both sucked.
Any other number threes that keep up to the mark?

Just wanted to pop in and say:
There are some sequels that are as good or better than the original . . . Aliens
No. No, no, no, no, no, no. Aliens is not nearly as good as Alien.
That is all. :p

I just come to think of how I love the two first Jurassic Park movies but scoff at the third one.

Alien & Aliens are two totally different movies. Both awesome, in their own way.

Yea, "Alien" is a horror-movie-in-space whereas "Aliens" is a war-movie-in-space; both good but I prefer No. 2.
Number 3: THEY KILLED NEWT!?!?!  - all you need to know
Number 4 you gotta wonder if they understood the basic concept of the series: "Ripley kicks Alien butt. " To turn her into a human/alien hybrid and then not show her going hand-to-hand with an alien....
OTOH Terminator 1 is much better than T2 (and again, T3 sucks.)
But in T2, like A3, how do you miss this?- you've got a terminator that can take any shape, and you never show duelling Arnolds?
Jurassic Park I see as a steady flow downhill.

Pirates of the Carribean 3!
If you're okay with calling LotR a trilogy, then RotK...amazing!

Certainly; as GM notes, Alien is a horror, and Aliens a war movie. Certainly Aliens is very good as a war movie, but (to my mind) Alien is even better as a horror movie.

Well, aren't we all agreeing fairies?
T2 is so better than T1. Heathen.

Loved the first one, (absolutely adored the soundtrack!) could digest the third one reasonably, but the second one was just bad. Too many plot errors and that had to be the worst prepared expedition I have ever laid eyes on. All they lacked were T-shirts with 'I'm a dinosaur snack' on them. :p
I hear they are once again considering a fourth one.

Too many plot errors and that had to be the worst prepared expedition I have ever laid eyes on.Yes, isn't that what the first film lacked, i.e. dinosaurs eating people on an almost industrial scale? :p
In addition, the sequel had no fences, two T-Rexes (plus a baby one) and a Godzilla-like trip to San Diego. Just the things that yours truly would drool over as a kid ;)
Film #3 would have been so much better if the American soldiers at the very end would have engaged the dinosaurs in an all-out combat :P

I dunno, I dislike the TV and movie tendency of having dinosaurs or other animals do anything -down to risking life and limb- to chase and butcher humans. It often doesn't make any sense for them to do that, it's just sloppy plotting.
Which is also a poor point in the third one, I readily admit, I'm pretty sure something as big as a spinosaur had better things to do with his time than charge at puny humans all the frigging time.
I actually like the limited role of the army in the third movie. Movies with army men against dinosaurs are often darn unrealistic, and then I don't mean that in the very obvious way. The animals are always far too bloodthirsty, and the army guys always far too stupid.
I want creatures to have some motivation for gobbling up people. I'm afraid I'm not the proper target audience for the usual monster movies. :p

Seriously? How much motivation can a non-sentient lifeform have? There's pretty much "Threatened my pups," "Entered my territory," and "I'm hungry." :p

At least that is some motivation. Sometimes there's not even that, or the reaction of the animal is waaay out of proportion. If you have creatures willing to fall off high cliffs, forgo hunting more suitable-sized prey, abandon fresh kills so they can chase a tiny shrieking human they never even seen (so don't even know whether they're tasty), then how did those animals even survive for so long?!
You can't tell me that every big animal out there, imagined or otherwise, finds humanity just so irrestible to nibble on that they must attack us at all costs.

Well, apparently, we taste like bacon (http://www.wired.com/table_of_malcontents/2006/11/robot_identifie/), so I'd find us positively scrumptious, were I a dinosaur. ;)

Rocky 3 was good on my opinion.
Indiana Jones and and the Last Crusade (1989) was good.
Mad Max beyond Thunderdrome (1985) was good.
Goldfinger (1964) was excellent.
Superman 3 (1983) was fun.
Another Thin Man (1939) is a classic.
The Bourne Ultimatum (2007) is a decent action film.
The Enforcer (1976) is not bad.
Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995) was not bad.
The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly (1967)
Sherlock Holmes and the Voice of Terror (1942)
[This one may not be considered a true sequel]
Zatoichi The Fugitive (1963) is part of an excellent Japanese movie franchise.

Star Trek 3 - not as good as 2, or even 4. But still... better than 5!

Of the original 6 films, I would rate ST5 as the worst.
ST3 was not bad, but I think it was not as good as ST2, ST4, or ST6.

Phil: Claire and I share a true love of cheesy cinema. Our favorite categories include genetically engineered animals gone wrong…
Claire:Old and young people switching bodies…
Phil: Tough guys taking care of babies.
Claire: Any sequel three and higher…
Phil: Oh yeah. You usually get a new cast around five and that’s where the magic really happens.

Rocky 3 was good on my opinion.
Indiana Jones and and the Last Crusade (1989) was good.
In both cases #3 was better than #2 but nowhere near as good as #1
Mad Max beyond Thunderdrome (1985) was good.
Better than #1 but not as good as #2
