I agree that Crystal Skull was bad (sorry b.banner) - the whole thing just seemed so 'tongue-in-cheek', that my willful suspension of disbelief got lost.

Bah, you guys were expecting too much ;). I thought it was fine. Not my favorite, but it was just fine. Last Crusade is still the best.

Word has it that Steven Spielberg didn't want ETs in the movie.

Only a "Little". ;) I enjoyed watching the film, but it is definitely worse than 1 and 3.

The cultural references to the 50s was a nice touch.
killer ants (as portrayed in film) and aliens was a bit much to accept.
convenient that there was a road through jungle for 2 vehicles to travel side by side.

I think that 4 showed signs of wear and not a really strong plot. Ford still looked good as indy.

The ETs made 4 a little silly

I suppose. Indy has always been a bit silly, though. There has always been a far-fetched, super-natural element to the series. I know Indy 4 was more silly than the other films, but I also think people take the earlier films in the series too seriously. At their heart, the Indy films are supernatural-action-comedies, and in that sense Indy 4 was just like any other Indy film.
