BOP, you live! How did it exceed your expectations? Was the plot really connected? Was the SFX beyond spectacular? Did it overall blow you out of your underpants?
Inquiring minds want to know!

This was awesome. I'm sure it blew BoP outta her underpants :D
Compared to this one, the others were corny and sucked. I don't consider myself a Trekkie, but this movie was awesome. Makes you fall in love with the original characters again. Simon Pegg as Scotty was just funny. It was like he was made for the role. Karl Urban played a very convincing McCoy. Chris Pine and I forget the other guy's name played a great Kirk and Spock. Great way to get a younger generation into Star Trek
Did I mention it was awesome?

All of the above, INKED! I can't even put my finger on it, but the whole thing was the shiznit. And that's saying something, cos classic trek is my favourite. I was so worried they'd screw it up, especially after that POS Cloverfield. I mean, JJ Abrams the man & all, but cloverfield seriously sucked. Like srsly. So, I had low expectations for Trek, but it was teh awesome! Spock, Kirk, Bones, McCoy. Rocked. Uhura was a little naff, but not too bad all & all.

I really enjoyed it, and I've never actually seen a full episode of a previous iteration of the franchise (although now I'm rather inspired to). The acting was above average for a big blockbuster sci-fi flick, and the action and effects were up to par. Plus since they have so much character development already done for them (Kirk, Spock, Scotty, McCoy, etc already have backstory after all) they were able to just run with it rather than struggling, as so many big movies do, to fix their characters in a universe.

It was good. Not great, but enjoyable. Once they got on the ship, things got about 80% better. If the movie had gone like it did in the first 25 mins, I would have said it was...doodoo.
But, overall I'm pretty happy about it. Mind you, it has almost zero of the natural Star Trek elegance you find in the other films. Very jumpy movie.

Well, well, I guess I'll have to give it a shot, then. It seems to stand on its own for the folks too young to have had the original experience and no one has said it was only a rip-off for the money. BOP seems to have melted into a puddle of fan-person, too! HB even gives it a thumb up!
OK, OK, I'll try to get to it this weekend and give you my impressions. But I warn you that I am an original FAN and wrote letters (those high tech devices!) to save the show. I won't go looking for TOS, okay, but these are big shoes they have to fill.

Well, as another letter-writing fan of TOS, I thought it was great. Sure, ridiculously improbable time-travelling plot, but hey, what's real Star Trek without that.
And of course the Alternate Timeline idea means they can run up the sequels without having to worry about consistency with the rest of the Trekiverse.

It was a decent enough action adventure flick but thats basically all it was and I was left with this feeling that there was something lacking. Young Star Trek characters versus angry miners from the future? Well ok. But thats all? I guess I just didnt get a strong "Star Trek Feeling" from it though. Maybe it was the Spock Cameo that raised my expectations. I dont know... So if you discount that then yes it becomes a watchable action adventure with some cool knowing references for the Trekies.
And Im not sure about making Uhura into a kind of Hallie Berry character. And how way over the top angtsy Kirk was. And as much as I liked the relationship development between Kirk and Spock Im not sure I was really comfortable with the young Spock character. The personality was just too different somehow. And of all characters Spock needs to be consistent...
And does anyone else think that Scotty was basically bigger version of Jackson's Pippen?

Rex,
Yeah, Scotty was definitely a Pippin re-do. Fun for the film, but not the Scotty we all knew.

I thought it was excellent, except for a couple of cheesy parts.

I thought it was a pretty darn respectable re-boot of a stale franchise.
