A few whispers here and an unknown director poking their head out there and plans have been put in place to film select stories out of the silmarillion that can make a connection enough to provide a story line that can continue tothe hobbit and lotr movies. The unknown director is rumored to be DC Anderson or an AJ Walkin.

(sorry my cousin wont stop bugging me until i write this on every tolkien forum, but i and i'm also speaking for my cousin hope this little rumor she heard from her production team boyfriend is true)

No new news on settlement but the silmarillion is supposed to be a sort of compromise, i just think, they think it can't be done

It could be done. Any story can be a good movie!

They've made decent movies out of the bible, so the Silmarillion shouldn't be too tough.

I think it would be great to make movies from the Silmarillion. One good one would be the story of Beren and Luthien. They probably couldn't make the whole book into one movie or even a series, but they could take stories from the Silmarillion and make movies like that.

The estate seems loath to compile and release near-complete stories such as Beren and Luthien or The Fall of Gondolin as books at this point. I can't imagine them being willing to allow films to be made. Children of Hurin, maybe. Someday.

Right DPR. From the current Tolkien Estate website FAQ:

Are there any plans to produce a feature film from The Children of Húrin?
There are no plans of this nature in the foreseeable future.

I Don't think this will ever ever come to be, however i do agree that the tale of Beren and Lúthien could be made into a great movie. The story seems complete enough to me, only problem would be the fact that the audience has no knowledge of events and people who appear in other tales from the Silmariliion.
