I'm sorry to see ads on Entmoot now. As a financial method of keeping this board alive, I'm perfectly fine with it. But still, being free from ads was so nice...

Can we at least not have them at the top of the page?

I thought we always had adds... or, at the very least, we used to have them... have they been brought back? My computer blocks them, I guess.

I remember having ads for a long time, but specific Tolkien-related ones, I don't think we had Google ads before or at least I can't remember. But I'm so used to tuning out those things, I hardly notice them nowadays.

Clearly, people aren't buying enough Entmoot-merchandise. :p Just kidding, of course.

Yeah, it's been a long time since I got any kind of revenue from the site. The Tolkien-specific ads dried up a few years ago, so it's been all costs. Now that I'm living on my own, I figured it was time to look into ads again.

This program sounded promising so I am trying it out. The ads seem unobtrusive enough.

I've never seen ads on the 'Moot, but these are unobtrusive even at the top, IMHO. I also have never seen a "Support the 'MOOT!"" drive nor 'moocherdise.
Boy, do I feel like a newbie!:)

As long as we stay IMVU-ad free, I'm fine with any ads. I've never seen more horrible ads than the IMVU ones... *shudders*

Ben, I hope this helps out in the cost :)

Yeah, I love having this board around! Hopefully the ads help you pay most of the server costs. Banner ads like we have now are pretty normal.

So far, I only know one person who bought that ((Earniel)).

Earniel, so happy to have a link to 'Mootcherdise! Rest easy, however, I am NOT buying the thong even though the "American Made" labelling is a real ..umm.. attention getter. Since I deal with "American-made" results for thong wearing (well, initially, at least) my view is rather jaundiced - and you would not believe who wears those things: just let me say that more of 'em are walking around WalMart than you care to imagine!

HectorBerlioz, just stop while you are ahead.

I'm partial to the green Entmoot Tee. Do I get a carbon-offset to ease my guilty conscience if I buy one and wear it on St Patrick's day whilst drinking green Entdrafts?:D

Treebeard says you may be required to plant a tree for that, hoom. ;)

Where's Evil Santa when you need him? >_<

Are these ads geared towards what we write by the way? On my other forum, in threads about religion, ads on Hebrew will pop up etc.

Some of them definitely appears to be that way . But there seem to be 'generic' ads in the mix too.

We should all donate a bit to help pay the costs of keeping things running.

How much does it run you?

I thought about this too. I would do my bit to keep it going. Though I couldn't really promise something this season...

How much do the ads generate, as compared to the total costs of running the site? Not enough to cover it?

Or to put it a bit differently: how much Entmoot bears should I ask for my birthday to help out?

I even get ads in Norwegian. I don't mind, not up there at the top of the page ...
I should perhaps check out that shop page, though. :)

Hehe me too, lots of Norwegian ads. I've become immune to internet ads though. I think I've never clicked on one, and because one of Norway's largest online newspapers, Aftenposten, has a litter of ads all over its website I've become so used to them that I never notice them any longer.. :)

It's interesting to think about though.. the millions of ads that we are bombarded with through our lives. It must affect the human brain somehow. It's also unprecedented in human history, that many signals, symbols and messages sent to the human brain in the course of a year.. compared to how things were only 10 years ago. Complete madness!

I think some of those ads adjust to the IP address and gives us ads accordingly.

Our brain's immediate reaction to the information overload is confusion, and then it reacts by shutting out all that information. What the long-terms effects are, we do not know. Perhaps we will notice a make of a product in a shop because we've seen the name of that make before, if only in an internet ad that we don't even remember seeing. :(

*Bump*

Does clicking on the ads generate any extra money for the site?

And I never got an answer to whether the ads are enough to cover all the costs of running the site. Do they? Or just partly?

Darned if I know. I think only Ben knows that and he comes and goes.

Maybe we should get him a bat-signal. :D

Oh, he can do without that. I'm sure his Shelob-ish spider-sense is tingling him back here in no time :p
