Thomas M. Disch, suicide, July 4th.

One of the greats of the 60s and 70s New Wave, though always pretty acerbic, and apparently got even more cranky and eccentic with the years.

The Genocides, Camp Concentration, 334 (especially "Angouleme") , "White Fang Goes Dingo" (marketed in America under the more SF-acceptable title "Mankind Under the Leash") "Casablanca", "Along the Asian Shore".

Also a fairly-widely published poet, under the name Tom Disch, and apparently became a reasonably-well selling horror writer in his later years.

Bizarrely, probably most known as the author of "The Brave Little Toaster" series.

"The Genocides"... Here's one novel that couldn't attract much Hollywood money.

Think of "Independence Day"... now how can an advanced civilization, capable of traveling such distances with so much technology, be defeated by puny humans who should be like ants to them.
There, ants, we are ants in "The Genocides". No happy ending, no steroid solutions, just the bare naked contemplation of utter helplessness in face of a superior force...
Terry Gilliam could tackle this project, but wouldn't be able to find the money anyway.

Well, they did make a movie of "The Road".

Then again, even that has a happier ending than Thomas's.

OTOH, so far the ants seem to be holding their own pretty well in the war humanity is waging against them, so maybe there's hope after all... :)
