What's a Yahoo Slurp Spider?

Aren't those bots that index the site for the yahoo search engine? At least, that's what I always thought...

Ha! I Googled it when I saw the increase of those thingies yesterday. Apparently it is some sort of indexing bot, that makes an index of the site and thus makes it easier to be found in that particular search machine. They do no harm (or so I read). (I even found some pretty ancient threads on this here on the Moot )

Yes, usually we have a couple of Google spiders as well. I don't think they're harmful, unless you count artificially boosting our visitor count.

VERY distant descendants of Shelob and Ungoliant.

Not even as harmful as those spider thingeys on "Lost in Space" the movie. ;)

Should we be worried if they're registering? That seems wierd...

No. They are doing it all the time, but they don't get past the question screen. ("What is the last name of Frodo" if I remember correctly)
But even if they can't get past it, they still show up in Who's Online as registering.

You can also so see them modifying options, editting posts, or searching forums. Since they can't do all that, I reckon they're just cataloguing every page they do find on the site.

Val, even the most poisonous spiders aren't as harmful as the "Lost in Space" movie:p.

Question though, why do are they called "slurp" spiders? I guess they just hang around in an easy chair slurping slurpees?
