Could you expand a bit on each and everyone?
For what qualities you are considering them as faves?
Mine are Finrod - for his integrity, and Luthien - for standing up by her man.

Ooh, fun, I'll bite. ;)
1. Fëanor - there's no disputing this with me. The greatest of all the Eldar. Passionate, firey, talented, and brilliant, he's also impetuous and a fantastic flawed hero!
2. Finrod - How can you not love him? Loyal, wise, kind, gentle and in all ways good, he's bound to capture your heart.
3. Maedhros - he's so tormented between his good heart and his desire to fulfil the oath. Truly a tragic character, especially his end.
4. Nerdanel - I think she's an incredibly underappreciated character. Has to be one of the strongest women in Tolkien's legendarium to be able to put up with Fëanor's passion all those years. AND bear seven of his children, when only one killed MÃ*riel.
5. Gildor - Don't know why, really. I just like him. ;)

DPR's top five Elves:
1. Fingon - The valiant, loyal friend risked all to save Maedhros and heal the breach within the Noldor. Led the cavalry to thwart the young dragon Glaurung. Was on the verge of kicking Balrog butt when he got attacked from behind. What's not to like?
2. Fingolfin - "But even as Fingolfin spoke, Fëanor strode into the chamber, and he was fully armed: his high helm upon his head, and at his side a mighty sword. 'So it is, even as I guessed,' he said. 'My half-brother would be before me with my father, in this as in all other matters.' Then turning upon Fingolfin he drew his sword, crying: 'Get thee gone, and take thy due place!'
Fingolfin bowed before Finwë, and without word or glance to Fëanor he went from the chamber. But Fëanor followed him, and at the door of the king's house he stayed him; and the point of his bright sword he set against Fingolfin's breast 'See, half-brother!' he said. 'This is sharper than thy tongue. Try but once more to usurp my place and the love of my father, and maybe it will rid the Noldor of one who seeks to be the master of thralls.'
These words were heard by many, for the house of Finwë was in the great square beneath the Mindon; but again Fingolfin made no answer, and passing through the throng in silence he went to seek Finarfin his brother."
I just love that he didn't say a word. I find that way more badass than any reply he could have made.
3. Maedhros - Good guy. Good heart yet great in battle, even one-handed. Sad victim of his rash "oath which none shall break, and none should take."
4. Elrond - Nice balance of everything and ties together all three of the main published texts.
5. Beleg - Loyal friend. Another sad victim of circumstance.
Edit: I just noticed we both have Maedhros as our #3 but the rest couldn't be more different. I like your Nerdanel and Finrod choices, too. I'd love to know more of Nerdanel.

Yes, Maedhros is great. :)
I wish we did know more about Nerdanel, but as far as I know there's just what's in the Silmarillion, and a bit in The Shibboleth of Fëanor (and was there some in Laws and Customs? I can't remember). But I think she had to be a fascinating character. One reason I'm doing the Fëanor RP on the other board. ;)
Yeah, other than that, though, our choices are quite different.
Seems you're rather fond of the House of Fingolfin.:mad:

What I'm waiting for is someone to list Thingol as a favorite because I can't imagine why anyone would.
Curufin
03-27-2008, 10:57 AM
Yeah, me neither...
There's a thread in the Silmarillion forum here I replied to a few hours ago where I claimed my favorite dwarf was "whatever one administered the fatal blow to Thingol" - I think that gives my opinion of the guy quite clearly.
Of course, with my love of the Fëanorians, I suppose it makes sense. They weren't exactly buddies. ;)

I can't stand Thingol. I dislike him probably more than the Sons of Feanor. I love Maedhros though. He's one of my new favorites.

Mhm... The favorite would be Gil-Galad ;)

Gil-Galad? Why? The guy was a bit of a poser. ;)

Gil-Galad? Why? The guy was a bit of a poser. ;)
The guy has my respect:cool:
He befriended the Numenorians of Middle Earth, was one of the first to suspect Annatar to be Sauron and fought in the Last Alliance, sacrificing his life. Doesn't seem like posing to me..

He befriended the Numenorians of Middle Earth
*shrug*
Finrod did this before they were even Númenórean - how is that special?
and fought in the Last Alliance, sacrificing his life.
As did thousands of elves and men...not to mention the thousands that had sacrificed their lives in the First Age...
Sorry, he just doesn't do anything that stands out for me as being special. *shrug*

You can shrug all you like but you don't persuade:rolleyes:
Besides, I thought this post was about naming favorite elves, not about who you judge to be the most special one, or a competition;)

I'm not trying to persuade.
I just asked a question and gave my opinion.
Who's competing? Not me.

Well, Gil-Galad did manage to hold things together and stay king for far longer than any of his predecessors, so he must have been doing something right.:p
But my favorite always has been, is and will be Glorfindel. No more badass than any other elf-lord maybe, but he strikes me as a sweetheart. :D

Unlike Fëanor and Curufin, you mean?
Willow Oran
05-11-2008, 04:08 AM
Very unlike. Though I will admit to a soft spot for Nerdanel, Maedhros and Maglor. Celeborn is on my favorites list too.:)
Curufin
05-11-2008, 04:10 AM
Maedhros. Bah! Gave up the kingship just because Fingon saved his life. Bah!
Maglor...well...he never actually did anything but sing sad songs about how much his life sucked.
As for mom, well, what can I say, she's my mom!
Celeborn - he's not even Ñoldor! Bah.

And you did what again...? Oh yeah! Tried to usurp Nargothrond from your host, tried to kidnap Luthien, and got repudiated by your son. Real good track record there, Curufin, you couldn't even succeed at being evil!:p;)
Curufin
05-11-2008, 04:21 AM
:p
Well, I said some really nasty things to Eöl, and I did shoot Beren. And I certainly didn't help Nargothrond any.
And then I did do pretty well in that whole Menegroth attack...

Yeah, well, that's beside the point.
:p
Oh, and here's a lovely portrait made while I was doing just that.

I must admit I've had more pleasant experiences.

That is a lovely one. I've seen it many times. Naughty Curufin, giving your big brothers grief like that.:p

Blame that nasty Dior, not me.
Willow Oran
05-11-2008, 04:45 AM
You attacked him. You don't get to blame your victim. The guy was just defending his wife, children and kingdom!
Curufin
05-11-2008, 04:47 AM
If he'd just given over the Silmaril nice and quiet like, nothing would have happened.
Willow Oran
05-11-2008, 04:48 AM
Maybe he would have given it over if you had helped retrieve it instead of trying to kill his parents...
Curufin
05-11-2008, 04:50 AM
Bah, maybe if he'd been my nephew things would have been better.
Silly Lúthien.

Now that was not my fault. Blame that blasted husband of hers.
She was a nice girl. Enjoyed hunting with her.
And read my siggy quote for my feelings on him.

Don't listen to them. They brought it on themselves. Always trying to make us look bad, you see.
They attacked us first. Read the reports. We didn't hurt anyone until they started shoving and not playing nice.

You did try to steal their ships even knowing that said ships were their equivalents to the silmarils as far as precious works go.
Curufin
05-11-2008, 05:30 AM
They were ships, not Silmarils. And we just wanted to borrow them.
We needed them. And that pig-headed Olwë was simply being stubborn.
The Dread Pirate Roberts

If you had been allowed to 'borrow' them, would you have still burned them to keep your brother from following you?
Curufin
05-16-2008, 02:30 PM
My uncle, you mean? Half-uncle, technically.
And I don't know, that would have been up to my father.
But they should have given them to us, out of sheer camaraderie, after everything we'd done for them.

Top Five Favorites:
1) Finrod: Loyal to a fault, but wise enough to see where such behavior was going to lead inevitably. He walked the walk when it came time to keep his word, and hey, he was awesome enough to burst out of his bonds and then wrestle a werewolf to death barehanded, after just going ten rounds in a close spell-duel with Sauron. The only Noldor confirmed to have been pardoned instantly of the Curse after dying in Middle-Earth.
2) Fingolfin: Love him for the same reasons as one of the previous posters. He kept his cool and stayed true to himself even when dealing with a punk like Feanor provoking him. Raw determination personified, but canny enough not to make the mistakes that Feanor and his sons did when it was their turn to roll down into Middle-Earth and smite orcs right outside Angband. The only non-Vala other than Turgon who caused Morgoth actual fear, AND the guy to call The Big Bad Valar out to duel. C'mon, he nailed Morgoth seven times before being brought down. Pretty good when you consider his opponent. I just like the way he handled himself.
3) Galadriel: One of the only female Noldor to really step up when everything was going to the dogs in Valinor. She realized her ambition to rule a fair kingdom of her own, AND she was smooth enough to be one and only Rebel Noldo to stick it out the full Three Ages before retiring to Valinor. Wise, beautiful, courageous yet compassionate.
4) Finarfin: Proof that the Noldor weren't all incapable of admitting when they were wrong/taking a new path after beginning on another. I admire the REASON that Finarfin forsook the march of the Noldor. He wasn't afraid of the Curse, he truly felt they'd all gone too far and he wasn't going to run from the consequences of that. You know that decision had to kill him inside, knowing it meant leaving his sons to the folly their loyalty had drawn them into.
5) Luthien. For all the obvious reasons. She gave up eternal bliss for true love, and stuck it out through thick and thin with Beren. The origin of the saying "Behind every great Man is a Woman", something she learned from Mama Melian.
