View Full Version : I love how the characters themselves refer to their adventures as a tale...

Have you noticed that the actual characters in The Lord of the Rings refer to the story as a tale?
I really like this idea.
Bilbo constantly speaks of the "happy ending", and he always writes down all events in his Book.
Sam also says something like "what a tale we've been in, mr. Frodo!"
Elrond also refers to the book as "The Tale of the Ring".
And so on.

I don't know why I like this so much, but it's a really cool idea.

Yes. And how the whole LOTR is supposed to be derived from the Red Book of Westmarch, making it a story about a story about a story.

My favourite example would be when Sam and Frodo catch a glimpse of, er, what's the name of that star, the one that's the Silmaril... anyway you know the bit: in the depths of despair, and Sam connects their light-glass with the tale of Beren and Luthien.
