just out of curiosity, how many of you know what my name means? (yes it is tolkein, no it is not well known at all)
and how many - probably all - of you had to check the indexes of books to find out?
i know i only found it by doing that... so thats why it starts with an 'a'. i got to it quick. to be honest id never really noticed it till i chose it for my nick

I know what it means. I thought I knew, but I looked it up to be sure. I was right... Hint: The second syllable is what gave it away for me. I don't think that particular syllable occurs anywhere else but in your name and 4 other related ones.

Four others? Anduin, Anduril, et al. you mean?

No, no, no, not the FIRST syllable, the SECOND. Silly parrot (Trix are for kids--sorry I've been wanting to say that!)
Edited to add: Silly me, too! I mean the LAST syllable, not the second. The "star" part... Where does that come from?

Well, according to my helpful guide to Quenya at the back of my Sil, it says that "an(d)" is "long" and "du" is "night or dimness", so I guess it would be "long night star", though where it comes from I have no idea.

The only thing I have come across is "astar", which is "months". So "long dim month"? Sounds Chinese. :p

I hadn't seen the months thing; that's not what I was thinking of. If you haven't read UT, I don't think you can find it elsewhere.
HINT: the first element is not "an" (long) but "andu", from "adune" (west).

So "star" is the second element...
Evenstar?

there, see, i knew i would eventually. actually my name is....<drumroll> a place..... in.... numenor! hah! from which you can see the lonely Isle on a good day, and where the elves land on to visit. there. the related ones are Forostar, Hyarrostar, Hyarnustar and Orrostar which are other areas.
there, how many of you were close to getting that?

No, I actually spent a lot of time trying to find the answer, but alas, I don't have UT. :( I did most of my research in The Languages of Tolkien's Middle-earth. :p

I just thumbed through the glossary in the back of my Sil, with a quick look in the LoTR index as well. No UT for me!
