Does anyone here have an opinion about the different releases of the movies? Is the extended version worth having if you are only going to have one?

I know this: If the theatrical version of FotR didn't quite live up to your expectations, the extended stuff makes it way better. Can't say that for the other two though, especially RotK. ;)

i think all the extended stuff makes all the movies better, as it adds more depth.

It does definitely improve the movies...and I actually thought some of the stuff they added to FOTR were nice touches that unfortunately didn't always seem to flow with the movie, like the way they mangled scenes for the "Woodelves" scene.
But some of the scenes for ROTK and TTT were absolutely great, like the ROTK "soup scene" and the "Final Count" scene from TTT..."He's twitching because he's got my axe embedded in his nervous system!"

I thought your maxim would be: More is more? It costs more!
:p

I'd prefer the extended version better. Gives a lot more character devlopment imo

One thing I love in the extended RotK - the way how Sauron looked like before the Rings.
But I understand why PJ did not incorporate it in the movie. It would be too confusing for those who have no idea about the history of ME and the Rings.

Wait...wait...where was this? Was it that Aragorn V. Sauron clip in the special features? I still need to watch those...

Has anyone invested in the newest special edition dvd set? They got enough of my money, but was just curious about what it contains that is truly different.

I did. It has both the Theatrical and Extended Versions plus an special features disk.
I bought them for 20 bucks each at Wal-Mart.

So if you already have the theatrical and extended editions, is it worth getting? I saw them advertised on television and wondered if I needed them.

If you want the Behind the Scenes Documentary that comes with it, filmed by a man hand picked by PJ. I haven't viewed it yet, but since each film comes with it, I think it a behind the scenes look at each film.

I prefer the Extend Editions, but sometimes I get a little sleepy. :D
Seriously, though? Just go with extended. There's so many extra goodies, and these have to be the only movies that TRULY and HONESTLY have awesome goodies on the extra discs (and unlike many other movies, they incorporate the extra scenes INTO the movie).

Hey, guys, I can't seem to find the directions for the easter eggs on the EEs anymore. I guess the threads are old, but wondered if anyone either knows where they are, or can tell me how to access the easter eggs (the one with Jack Black, the one of Gollum and Andy Serkis, and I think there was another?). I have a friend visiting who hasn't seen the EEs, and I'd love to show him this while he's here. We're having an EE marathon! :)

This thread (http://entmoot.tolkientrail.com/showthread.php?t=9950) looks like the one you're looking for. Enjoy the marathon. :)

Thanks! Nothing had popped up when I did a search. We had fun! I hadn't watched the EEs in a long time.
