Oh, piddle, Hec. Don't EVER be inspired by someone you haven't read. The reason I picked up Vampire Chronicles is because I'd been getting interested in Anne Rice. ALWAYS read the works!

I was inspired by the fact he got such a great deal from Harpercollins[?]
You've read Anne Rice's first book about Jesus, I'm supposing... ;) I listened to half of it on CD...too personal.

Jeremy Irons!!!! Cool beans; I love JI!
I've never read the book; tried to once, didn't much like the beginning--just too... juvenile, maybe. Anyway, I compare all fantasy to Tolkien, so most fall miserably short.

yes that will happen the books are ok, just not great too predictable and downright plagaristic at times, that said they good enough to get me hooked reading them for one whole afternoon; a poor decision on my part in hindsight considering I had a lot of homework that weekend but I digress.
I'm not sure how good the movie will be the trailer looked a little bit lame to me, not to mention fake in a few shots but hopwefully thats just the trailer.

Plagaristic, huh? Yeah, I could see a bit of that even in the trailer. You're right, it did look lame... Now that fantasy has become something of a big market, it's to be expected that the genre will be exploited, I guess.
Yeah I would agree that the books are just ok. You have to give him some slack when it comes to being original because of how much has already been done in the genre, but I still don't that it's all that original. It's an alright read, though.
It's funny about the movie though. While I was reading the first book I would note to myself any real bad plot twists the auther could have included(or did include), and it seems that whatever idiotic thing the auther had the brains not to do, the movie is going to do.

Cool beans, indeed. Almost anything that includes Jeremy Irons + a sword is worth watching. :D
The book get's a little bit better, by the way. But just a little bit :)

Indeed, trying to find original material for fantesy is becoming scarce these days, it just makes you think, "if I was writing a fantesy book, what would I write that hasn't been done?" Your chances aren't good of finding much to write about.
Welcome to Entmoot, O Lord of the Mark! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
I think anyone can come up with something original if that's what they want, but I think in some ways Christopher Paalini wasn't looking to come up with some original as much as he was looking to emulate some of his favorite story tellers.
If you ask me originality is something that, for some at least, will come with age as you begin to formulate your own ideas about who you are, which will shine through in your writing.
Lord of the Mark
10-12-2006, 10:43 PM
Thank you, Bran, I agree, I believe that originality comes with age, and that's what happens with Paolini's work, along with his writing style. It improves as the book progresses, as I'm sure you know.

I saw the trailer last week when I went to see the Guardian. I have to say It looked pretty neat. I've been hearing people talk about Eragon forever, I just haven't gotten around to reading the two books he has out now. The movie looks sweet, Of course anything that involves JI, swords and dragons is cool beans ;)

I don't want to see it, some books should stay books.
If a film maker changed it at all it would end up real bad.
The auther made it in just the right way so it isn't all bad but as a movie it would stink.

I'm gonna see it because it the the only epic fantasy movie coming out this winter 4 years of great winter fantasy movie I just hope Eragon doesn't mess up the line of great films. We've had Lord of the Rings, then Narnia, now Eragon. *crosses fingers*

Does anyone know if they're filming Eragon and Eldest back-to-back? Because after seeing the trailer with that other dragon in there with all the aerial battles it looks like that should be Eldest, or maybe they're putting them together or something. Please enlighten me! :)

well actually Brom gives Eragon Zarroc about a quarter the way through the book and he does wield it, but not until Brom has trained him for a while.

I think it apeared metallic because in the book Sapphira was given dragon armor by the dwarves.

I don't think so, nothing i've read online suggests that. It appears to me that in the previews the metallic looking dragon is just Sapphira in her armor. You also have a lethrblaka that migt appear dragonish. And judging by the first trailer, they introduce Galbatorix fairly early and we might get to see Shruikan(his dragon who is black).
I don't know if I want to see it. The trailers made it look like they messed it (the book) up bad. As in made it really different. I'd really like it if they could make movies like books.

I've seen a comershal for the Eragon movie, they changed everything so much in looks (the hand thing for example) and put scales on Saphiras wings!
The wings were supost to be an ovious target so they stayed on the ground most of the time...
Anyway this just confirms my resons not to watch it... Sorry to be a spoil sport.

Do you guys feel that perhaps these movie deals were made in a bit of rush? I mean, just because Narnia and LotR were such big sucesses, does it mean they HAVE to make a movie of it right away?
They could've taken their time, IMO, and made worthwhile.

Its either Galbatorix who from the teasers they have chosen to bring in sooner. Or its the shade (Durza I think his name was) the soldiers appear have black and red armor as well. I still haven't seen an urgal in the trailers.

As an aspring film maker I quite agree. What frustrates me is the lack of originality in so many movies these days. (not so much indies and foreigns) I'm sure its harder than it looks to write a good original screenplay but come on haven't we seen enough corny, predictable, quasi inspiring sports movies?.

Well I haven't seen that particular movie, but I can tell you this: Brunnhilde may not always look beautiful, but she as sure heck sounds like it:D
(Unlike in Italian Opera-where you get some real knockouts looks-wise, in Wagnerian opera it's almost a rule that the singer-while not "fat" has to be quite hefty chestwise)

Bleah!! They killed it! Arya is not supposed to be a blonde poster girl for bavaria. She is NOT the St Pauli's girl of elves. I thought she looked more spanish from her descriptions in the book. What is it with these movie makers. First the rasta-white-witch in dreads now Bavaria Girl in Eragon. Gyeah....
They killed it in my opinion.
Ok. I am trying to figure out, from what you said, how Arya looked. I got the impression that she had blonde hair in the movie. The book said she had black. Is that what you mean?

Oh yeah, I saw it on Wednesday. I like the book far better. I think the movie was a little bit face paced with very little pauses. A quarter way through the film I quit comparing it to the book because of the changes. It was still good, IMO

I saw the movie. Usually, I'm a b**** about a book turned movie and I'll rave for weeks about how much the movie sucked, but I didn't with this movie. It was nothing like the book( 'specially Angela) but I didn't hate it. It made a good (or an ok movie...depends on what you think) movie in and of itself. I cannot say the same for the book.
The book was an ok read, I suppose...probably better for someone a bit younger than most of the Mooters but it wasn't horrendous.
My biggest complaint with this movie (all movies really) is the dragon. A movie will almost never portray a dragon the way an author describes it. Example. In Harry Potter, the dragon walked on two hind legs and had wings resembling a bat with the clawed hand like attachment. It was what almost everyone calls a wyern. The thing with this dragon was that it had feathered, not webbed, wings. Anyway, I think it's just a pet peeve I have...I suppose a feather winged dragon does look better on screen. *shrug*

I love the book(s), but I was really disappointed with the movie. Or let´s put it this way: the movie is quite good, if you won´t read the book. I HATE it when those damn writers chance the script just to fit their thoughts! If my book ever makes it as far as becoming a movie, I´ll make sure they won´t change the script an inch.... Book-Movie comparisons aside...I thought the acting was VERY weak. Even some of the very talented actors in the film were given weakly written parts (screenplay-wise) and therefore made to look like bad actors.
This was so not like the book! They wrote all the story out of the story. It is just a chain of events...
I want part three of the book so I can finally finish the story...
