I'm not sure if this will be considered a duplication of the what if? thread, but it has a specific purpose-rather than just speculating about what would have happened, let's come up with some alternate scenarios, that is write an outline of how the story would go from certain points in Tolkien's books based on the following changes (I say outline because a rwriting the entire book from that point forward would take too long. And feel free to come up with your own scenarios:
1) In the Barrow downs Frodo, pippin, merry, and Sam are killed by a barrow wight. What Happens to the ring
2) Pippin and Merry are captured by Old Willow, after screaming for help to no avail, frodo yells at the tree: If you don't release them unharmed, I will burn you and the entire forest to the ground
3) Frodo inquires of Gaffer who the stranger was that he was talking to
4) Gandalf suggests giving the ring to an eagle to take to the cracks of doom at the council of elrond.
5) Frodo is captured at cirith Ungol and taken to Barad Dur without the ring (which Sam took)
6) What if the Balrog had gotten the Ring?
7) What if Gandalf had escaped from Moria with the Fellowship?
8) What if Boromir had survived Parth Galen?
9) What if the hobbits of the Fellowship had not succeeded in raising the Shire quickly and effectively enough to defeat the ruffians before the rebellion could be put down? Suppose they had been overwhelmed & brought as prisoners to "Sharkey" at Bag End?
10) Suppose Grima hadn't snapped and stabbed Saruman? Suppose "Sharkey" and "Worm" had simply hit the road and gone their way?
11) Suppose the Three Rings had indeed retained their power and became free when the One was destroyed?
12) Suppose the Isengard Orcs under Ugluk had succeeded in capturing Frodo ?
13) Suppose Grishnakh had escaped from the Rohirrim (and Ugluk) with Merry & Pippin?
14) Suppose that at some point between the time Bilbo vanished at the Party, and the time Frodo and his companions set out from Hobbitton, Saruman had learned of Bilbo and his disappearance?
15) Suppose Gandalf and the Witch-King had actually fought at the gate of Minas Tirith? Who would win, and more importantly, how would subsequent events fall out as a consequence?
16) Isildur decides to heed warnings and takes the ring to the cracks of doom only to succumb to the temptation to claim it for himself.
17) Frodo succumbs to the morgul knife while in rivendell and people begin to notice he is fading... What do they do with the ring?
18) Bilbo Kills Gollum in the Misty Mountains, not out of cowardice, but because he doesn't jump high enough and He's forced to defend himself when Gollum catches him.
okay... someone Else's turn... for now
