As most of you know, we have been experiencing problems with the database for the last 3 days. Some are able to get to Entmoot and some aren't. It is still a mystery as to why, but for those of you who can get here, I wanted to let everyone know that I was able to contact Ben last night, and he is working on the problem. Hopefully this will be resolved and we will be back to normal soon. :)

Mooters present seem to be using www.entmoot.com as the URL, instead of http://entmoot.tolkientrail.com .

Thank you, Sister Golden Hair, Ben, Earniel, Valandil and the rest of the staff for getting our Entmoot back on the horse. It would be so, so messed up if we lost our mootingplace forever! God, I was worried there for a couple days. I was seriously worried. Is there a way you can easily mass-e-mail the members, so that all of the mooters can be notified of the address change? A lot of members may not be able to figure out to put www.entmoot.com, I know I didn't. Grey Wolf & Butterbeer let me know about the change. Do you think that this is a thing you guys in administration can do, that is the mass e-mail notification?

Grey_Wolf and I have discussed creating a email group for just such occassions. If you still wish to do that GW, go ahead and set it up. Sorry I haven't gotten back in PM with you on that. I don't see a problem with it though. Sounds like it could be a helpful tool, since I have received a number of emails and IMs since this problem started. I'm sure Ben's Tolkientrail email will no doubt be overwhelmed.

Perhaps G-mail, Yahoo or Hotmail will do as an agent for such an email group.

Ok Ill go and see which is best. And Hotmail appears to be the best choice. It has the group option.

Yeah -Ben working on the problem means that it will be resolved in a few months tops - :D It is odd that http://entmoot.tolkientrail.com/ is not working.

Just use entmoot.com - I've had no problems. entmoot.com has been around for at least 4-5 years - its nothing recent or new.

True, if you were not here when it was announced the couple times that it was announced then you wouldn't know about it. I suppose an announcement could be made on TT home page and the link could be changed to entmoot.com. But Ben would have to do that.

Entmoot.com as a way to reach the board was started 3/28/2001 (before this vbulletin even) - and since 2003 we've actually owned the domain. (reference thread http://entmoot.com/showthread.php?t=1067 )

And now you know :D :)

Sister Golden Hair

Well HOBBIT, Ben is having a problem remembering his password into TT. :D

Well, we can send out mass emails to the members - I think that that was a question asked. Those who selected not to recieve admin emails wouldn't get them though. In the control pannel under "users" then "send email to users"

Since a lot of the members don't know about entmoot.com - it might be a good idea to send out a mass email.

I noticed this. I always used entmoot.tolkientrail.com , but when that error started coming up I tried www.entmoot.com and its been fine.

Butterbeer

surely you can email all the members- this must in fact be terribly easy provided you have the authority to do so.

Also it is very easy to add a sig or link to all of the email notifications sent out adding the entmoot.com link

...really isn't hard.

also a code redirect from the tolien trial URL to the to entmoot.com URL is very easy also

also - why not just add a simple BOLD line to the error message in tolkien trial giving the alternate URL????

whats all this about a centralised public email list?
I do not beleive anyone signed up to that when we joined?

Have you guys thought this through????

I would be very careful with it if i were you.

Best all, BB :)

BB - I just posted about an hour before your post that we can easily send out mass emails, etc. We will do so if we think it to be nescessary.

It was a good idea, GW, and very thoughtful of you, as long as you used only publically-available email addys. Even if you didn't, it was still thoughtful and kind of you to help out, which in my book is the important thing :)

I think that's a good idea that BB brought up, Hobbit - can you just add a link to the error msg page?

Hi, guys. I could swear I entered a few posts here yesterday, and I see no sign of them - or it, mybe it was just one post.

The site was inaccessible to me since about 5 or so yesterday evening, pacific time, and only just now - as in about five minutes ago - was I able to get through. When the site became unavailable to me last night, I was still even logged in, and was inable to even log myself out. Yet, I see that others did not have the same problem. Sister Golden Hair, BMilder, et alia, can you guys explain to us what happened? Will this keep happening?

And were posts deleted, for some unexplained reason, (no reason why they would be as they were entirely well within the rules, nothing wrong there)or did they vanish due to this ongoing ghost-in-the-vbulletin problem?

HOBBIT
03-23-2006, 11:39 PM
I was unable to access entmoot all day until about an hour ago. No idea why this is happening. Talked to bmilder - he doesn't know either.

Seems to be ok now. Hopefully it won't happen again soon.

You can e-mail Ben Milder at his email address, you don't have to be logged on to do that. Check his info right now;he has his email address there. Then, if something happens again, you - or any of us, can email him from our own email account, independent of Entmoot, and let him know what's going on, and that we need help, and stuff like that. :)

BB, it's not only you - many mooters' posts - and even PMs - disappeared. I don't think anybody actually deleted them, more likely it's a freak-result of the violent server problems we had recently.

Seems it got back to the stage it was sometime yesterday - for example, I changed my avvie, and then I wasn't able to come to the Moot for a while ("Oops! we can't open"-page popped up all the time) and by the time I got back, my avvie mysteriously changed back to the old one. That's why I think it's just a weird server-hiccup result, nothing more.

;)

Butterbeer

Also good to know what happened to the missing PM's and posts, I was already wondering. It was the first time that I got a notification email and no corresponding PM! If I could turn over my inbox like a desk drawer, I probably would have, to look for that PM.

Hmmm, I didn't recieve any email either. But that's weird because I was told here that I should check my inbox.

Also, two days ago, I couldn't even see the moot at www.entmoot.com, and I tried to access it through a google search but that didn't work either. Was it just me, or maybe just Mozilla users as the board was mid-repair? Now it's not a problem anyway.

My midterms are over and I'm home on spring break.

During my time at home I will:

My apologies for the delays on this.Yay! Don't spend your whole spring break in front of the computer just because we've been bugging you though. I'd feel bad.

It probably told you to check your inbox because I PMed you, to tell you about the new address after the first crash, in the hopes that the PM would do exacly what it did - notify you through your e-mail. The reason why you had no PM when you came here is because after the second crash, the whole day and a half after the first crash was deleted from all of Entmoot's database, all the posts, all the PMs, everything transpiring between the two crashes.
