I love O'Brian's books!
I've only read the first two or three (and seen the Russell Crowe movie), but they are extraordinary.
His characters have so much character.
I bought a book titled "A Sea of Words" so I could start learning the jargon and history around them :). It's part dictionary/glossary part essay/paragraph style explanations of things.

couldn't agree with you more, the film was what got me started reading and it is one of the few films that give the books justice(except it is too short, and they need to make another one)
who wrote the Sea of Words book ?

I saw the movie, I thought it was pretty good. I haven't read the books yet, but I have the second book, is it okay to read them out of order? Will I get confused or will it spoil the first book? I got to go on the Surprise! It was at this Festival of Sail that I went to, there were tons of ships and that was one of them! It was pretty cool.

I don't think the order really matters, i just read all that the library had, and then school started and i haven't done much reading for fun.
i was thinking that he would name a liger after someone in parliament or a ship or something, carnivoree aubreii, perhaps
