actually, "looking behind" to quote Gandalf himself when asked by Thorin.

...."looking behind I saw a fire in the distance and made for it".

....more detail, ok......he met two of Elrond's people on the road and they told him that the trolls were in the area.

yes, but all answers for questions on this thread must be from the Hobbit.

Since Thorin is the one who mentions the place, maybe we should consider that this particular question involves not what is absolute (per Tolkein), but what is considered true by the dwarves . . .

So, maybe the proper question should be, "Where do the dwarves, particularly Thorin, believe that the great dragons bred, as stated by Thorin in the Hobbit?"

i know this is late but i was wondering about the answer, they are superstitious because in the beginning when gandalf is talk about bringing bilbo along the dwarves didn't want to until gandalf pointed out that their party would be thirteen and they could have all the bad luck.
