What do we know about this historic figure at helms deep?

Tolkien didnt really go into much detail with him, but apart from Aragorn he was true heart of courage of the men of Rohan.

Opinions?

gamling is just a random old man, gamling itself means "old man", he was just a random character put in, like the man from michel delving in the first chapter, that's all

You're right, there isn't too much info about Gamling. The most important thing about him is that during the Battle of the Hornburg, he was the first to realize that the Orcs broke through Helm's Deep. He actually led the defense against those Orcs.

But other than that, not much else was said about him. But I did like his character. Nothing's cooler than an old man who can fight. :)

It's sometimes sad to read about those neat-o little things you wonder a lot about, only to find out that the author only meant for them to be just a link for the plot. Ah well :)
